MX revisions?

Is anybody here familiar with the different revisions of the MX? I just received my 2nd MX (914***) and noticed some slight variations from my original (418***). Here's what I noticed:

1. The 'MX' logo on the front face of the camera is bolder on the later model, and finer on the earlier
2. The design of the memo holder on the rear of the camera is square on the later model, and rectangular on the earlier
3. The later model has 'Asahi Opt. Co. Japan' embossed on the rear upper body of the camera, while the earlier model has it located on the film memo holder.
4. The text inside the viewfinder representing the shutter speed dial is bolder on the earlier model, and finer on the later
5. The aperture window above the lens mount seem to differ slightly
6. The shutter 'cocked' indicator is slightly larger on the later model than the earlier
7. The later model seems to be a fraction lighter than the earlier, but I'm yet to confirm

Feel free to add any further variations you have noticed between revisions.

For anyone wanting to know the differences between the two revisions, check out this site (Japanese text). Basically, the most noticeable differences are:

- Serials beginning with 9 are the early revision which have the square, metal rear film holder and 'Asahi Opt. Co. Japan' embossed on the rear upper body of the camera.
- Serials beginning with 4 are the late revision which have a plastic, rectangular rear film holder.

I have one of each. Personally, I prefer the later model (418***).

I've enjoyed shooting this setup with HP5+ recently. This lens feels more balanced on this body than it does on the MX. The MX tends to pair well with smaller, lighter lenses like the M50/1.7 or Rikenon P 50/2.

Being a Spotmatic guy, it feels great in the hands. Love the weight and heft of the camera, but not the light meter HUD. The needles protrude into the frame to far and the transparent shutter speed range leads me to believe there is more in the frame than there really is. I much prefer the MX in that department.

It could just be my imagination, but it feels there is less mirror vibration compared to the MX. And with the mirror lock-up enabled, it's almost vibration free. Would I be correct in saying it is the only fully-manual and mechanical Pentax 35mm SLR to feature MLU? Nevertheless, my favourite K mount body.

My beloved black S3 is the lightest of my fully mechanical and meterless Pentax SLRs at just 578g. By contrast, my K weighs 590g and SL 604g. Coupled with an early ST50/1.4 it makes a very capable and comfortable street camera.

I was in your position not too long ago, and you're absolutely right. Freight is terribly expensive from AUS to USA, especially when you need to re-send gear that wasn't fixed properly the first time around.

Shipping to Japan is much cheaper. There's a film Pentax specialist in Tokyo - Hasegawa Repair - and from what I've heard he does a good job. He can repair corroded prisms as mentioned on the homepage of his website.

Only thing is, he may not be accepting international orders directly. But what you can do is send your camera to a Japanese forwarding service such as Benly Express who can organise to send it to him domestically and return it to you when it's done.

If you need any help let me know.

Website - History of Super-Takumar 50mm f1.4 (8 Element)

As some of you may already know, there is a website which goes into significant detail into the history of the Super-Takumar 50mm f1.4 8 element lens (taku-hachi). But unfortunately for us westerners, it is only written in Japanese text.

Therefore, I have taken it upon myself to translate the entire webpage into English. There simply isn't enough information about the 8 element lens available on the internet for non-Japanese speakers like myself, and Google translate hasn't yet reached the stage where it can provide an adequate translation of the text.

My goal is to compile a comprehensive, English website which covers the known history of the taku-hachi. I have contacted the owner of the Japanese website (Shisan) and he has kindly given me full permission to create an English version of his website. I am working closely with a native Japanese speaker to ensure the translation is as accurate as possible.

If you know of any other resources or forum members who may be able to add to this project, please let me know. This will be a work-in-progress for quite some time, so please do check back every now and again if this interests you.

I own a lot of black pentax, but I've never come across one with such glossy paint work. Will be sending this S3 away for a CLA soon. I believe the shutter curtains might need replacing.

Pentax AP prototype
Posted By RR84

I found this in a Japanese book called 'Classic Pentax'. Here's a rough translation:

The far right example is the first prototype. Before they started to use computers to design cameras, they used to make wooden samples based on the designer's sketches. The other two are to the final prototypes and the final LX body was made based on these two samples. Until they named it "LX" it was called "AP" (Asashi Pentax). The pentaprism part of middle sample was used to design K2DMD as well.

They spent a long time and made so many samples to decide the final shape of the body. After all, they finally decided to take the one on the top.

Hope that helps.

In the 50's and 60's you had to be good if you wanted to step into a recording studio. On the other hand, many artists nowadays are rushing to record their music simply because they can, not because they're ready to make art.

Below is one of my favourite quotes on this topic from one of the best audio techs in the business:

"The truth tends to work better with these people (Frank Zappa, Stevie Wonder), since they spent a lifetime crafting a unique sound. I've seen the color thing used more commonly with acts that don't have the talent or ability of the great people. Some engineers are turning a mouse into a man, fattening up a track that's shitty and making a player sound better than he really is.The people I work with don't need to be better than they are — they just need the world to hear how good they are." - Jim Williams

Here's the difference. While effects can be added at any stage during the recording / mixing process, it takes an artist who 'knows their sound' to print FX to tape.

Not too long ago I worked with a band who were keen to record their EP in my all-analog studio. Although they had experience recording in digital studios before I knew they weren't ready for tape after seeing them play live on a couple of occasions. When it came time to lay down the guitar tracks it quickly became apparent that the guitarist didn't know his sound. After trying all kinds of FX pedals and reverbs, the guitarist gave up tinkering in the hope that I could make him sound like a rock star in mixdown using all kinds of PP.

While they could get away with it in the digital realm, there's no where to hide on tape.

Making adjustments pre-photo requires you to commit to your convictions and accept the outcome regardless of the result. You have taken a leap of faith, trusting in your own judgement as a photographer. Adding a starburst effect in PP does not require any commitment from the artist as nothing is irreversible.
