I've always felt that Pentax' best lenses were their early Takumar triplets (50/1.4, 58/2 and 83/1.9) which is why I've been shooting Rikenon 50/2 and 55/1.2 on the KX.

I paired the F2 with a couple of Nikkor 50/1.8 long-body and pancake primes which are renowned for their distortion-free imaging. For me, lack of distortion is much more important than speed which is why I broke off my love affair with the 50/1.4 Takumar. Beautiful lens for portraits, but near unusable for street photography.

As per Ontarian50 and Xmas' recommendations, I purchase a Nikon F2 eye-level to replace my KX. It is everything I wanted the KX to be - 100% viewfinder coverage, no needles or light meter display. The ultimate fully manual and mechanical 35mm SLR.

I've enjoyed shooting this setup with HP5+ recently. This lens feels more balanced on this body than it does on the MX. The MX tends to pair well with smaller, lighter lenses like the M50/1.7 or Rikenon P 50/2.

Being a Spotmatic guy, it feels great in the hands. Love the weight and heft of the camera, but not the light meter HUD. The needles protrude into the frame to far and the transparent shutter speed range leads me to believe there is more in the frame than there really is. I much prefer the MX in that department.

It could just be my imagination, but it feels there is less mirror vibration compared to the MX. And with the mirror lock-up enabled, it's almost vibration free. Would I be correct in saying it is the only fully-manual and mechanical Pentax 35mm SLR to feature MLU? Nevertheless, my favourite K mount body.

I'm also sad to see Neopan 400 go. Have you found a replacement for it?

My beloved black S3 is the lightest of my fully mechanical and meterless Pentax SLRs at just 578g. By contrast, my K weighs 590g and SL 604g. Coupled with an early ST50/1.4 it makes a very capable and comfortable street camera.

I was in your position not too long ago, and you're absolutely right. Freight is terribly expensive from AUS to USA, especially when you need to re-send gear that wasn't fixed properly the first time around.

Shipping to Japan is much cheaper. There's a film Pentax specialist in Tokyo - Hasegawa Repair - and from what I've heard he does a good job. He can repair corroded prisms as mentioned on the homepage of his website.

Only thing is, he may not be accepting international orders directly. But what you can do is send your camera to a Japanese forwarding service such as Benly Express who can organise to send it to him domestically and return it to you when it's done.

If you need any help let me know.

Yes, EricH has a very loyal following here on Pentax Forums. Personally, I value the pride that the Japanese put into their work and how seriously they take their craft.

If they don't accept international orders, I know for certain that Kanto CS do. They are renouned as one of, if not the best camera repair shop in Japan. Pricey, but worth it.

Most Japanese companies these days have a staff member who can communicate in English. I suggest you send CS-Kagoshima an email at mail@cs-kagoshima.info with a clear explanation of your problem and see what they say.

Yeah I'm sure most people are happy with his work. I realise I'm in the minority here.

I did follow it up and he offered to take another look at it. While it might be feasible for someone like yourself in the US to do a repeat send-off, shipping costs are pretty expensive here is Australia. I'm not going to pay another $95 in shipping to have it corrected. It should have been done right the first time.

Well, not necessarily. I recently sent him a KX and SP which both had inaccurate slow shutter speeds. I even made a note about it in a clearly written letter enclosed in the box with the cameras. Both cameras came back with the slow shutter speeds exactly the same (KX was slow, SP was fast). He did a fine job on the lenses though. But next time I'll be sending my Pentax bodies to Japan for CLA and OH.

There are two Pentax specialist repair shops in Japan that I know of: Hasegawa Repair in Tokyo, and cs-Kagoshima on Kyushu Island. Their prices seem reasonable too.

I'm surprised there aren't many mentions of M42 bodies and lenses. For me, that's where it's at.

I'd either have to go with a SP + ST50/1.4 (8), or a K + 58/2. If it must be just one, I'd go the SP/50 with a supply of Delta 400.

Website - History of Super-Takumar 50mm f1.4 (8 Element)

As some of you may already know, there is a website which goes into significant detail into the history of the Super-Takumar 50mm f1.4 8 element lens (taku-hachi). But unfortunately for us westerners, it is only written in Japanese text.

Therefore, I have taken it upon myself to translate the entire webpage into English. There simply isn't enough information about the 8 element lens available on the internet for non-Japanese speakers like myself, and Google translate hasn't yet reached the stage where it can provide an adequate translation of the text.

My goal is to compile a comprehensive, English website which covers the known history of the taku-hachi. I have contacted the owner of the Japanese website (Shisan) and he has kindly given me full permission to create an English version of his website. I am working closely with a native Japanese speaker to ensure the translation is as accurate as possible.

If you know of any other resources or forum members who may be able to add to this project, please let me know. This will be a work-in-progress for quite some time, so please do check back every now and again if this interests you.

The 977*** has a diamond but no R. It also has the 'narrow' font on the aperture ring, while the 978000 has the 'wide' font (as most early examples seem to have).

I don't have the 978000 on hand at the moment, but I do have another from the third batch - a 977***. I checked the aperture ring and it has full stops between f1.4-f2 or f11-f16.

Thanks Droo for the incredibly detailed history on the ST50/1.4.

The S/N of my example pictured is 978000. According to your info, would it be correct to assume it is the last one made from the third batch?
