If you can't afford the 24-70 and 70-200 for the K1 what would you get?

I have no intent of hijacking your thread, but I was reading the thread and thought: IDEA!

As a retired teacher, I don't always (mostly never) have the money to buy the primo lens of any size or type. So I am always looking for alternatives – especially alternatives where the quality difference is not near as great as the price difference. And I amcsure I am not the only one with these constraints.

Anyway, why not expand on the concept from this thread and build a thread or a group or whatever the structure covering all the lenses where folks are making or have made specific direct comparison decisions. Someplace where a member could say "I bought Lens B for only 50% of the cost of Lens A, but it delivers 90% of what Lens A can do and here is why (with examples)."

Just a thought.

My apologies for the interruption.

KS-2 always use aperture F22

There are a few places that will fix this. The cost will vary between 100-200 dollars I believe, depending on whether you want to do it by an authorized Pentax repair center like Precision Camera - Digital Camera Repair, Video Camera Repair or by an independent shop such as Pentax Camera Repair - Aperture Control Repair. It beats buying a new camera, unless you really want to buy the new camera and that would be a good reason for it :) And as mentioned, the aperture block failure doesn't keep the camera from being used with older manual aperture lenses, and some people will buy it for that purpose at a reduced price, or to have it fixed, so if you decide to swap cameras, you can recoup part of the cost associated with that.

From what I can remember, live view shouldn't be affected by front or back focusing, to do with pdaf and cdaf as far as I know.
If you're having issues with live view focusing, I'd say send it back.

I might learn from this thread too as I could be wrong.
Good luck and fingers crossed

Glad to help. So the shots we have been seeing were using Live View? Which part of the Lens Cal were you focusing on because the chart was certainly back focused but that would depend on what you had focused on and could possibly give you an erroneous indication of back focus. A pretty good distribution of focus is usually a bit more back focus than front focus but that depends on what type of photography you are doing.

Glad to hear that the shots are looking pretty good at +5. I've found that my K-3 will scatter the focus over a very narrow range over a series of shots so you may need to just find the best average setting to get consistent shots.

Keep the light on the right side of the scale so there won't be shadow on the scale.

I use Focus peaking for verifying the focusing in LiveView, without taking the picture. This saves lot of time. This is how I do.

a) Enable Focus Peaking
b) Configure AF button for focussing.

Repeat these steps until you get satisfactory af-offset
a) Turn off LiveView
b) Adjust focus offset (say +3)
c) Press AF button and let the camera do AF.
d) Turn on LiveView for verifying focussiing (Do not touch AF button when Live view is on)
e) Zoom the Live view to 100%. You should see the marching ants around the line that is in focus.
f) Turn off the LiveView.
Repeat above steps with different AF offset.

Above procedure should help you reach ballpark AF-offset, then take pictures and inspect in PC. I usually take 3 pictures 'with af-offset', 'without any af-offset' and 'MF using Focus peaking'.

Viewfinder has scales for leveling the camera, I use them also.

I am not sure it ever was. ;)

When I was shopping in early 2007, both the K10D and the Sony Alpha 100 had sensor-based SR with the Sony version being inherited from prior Minolta bodies with the same feature.

Charleston is largely a narrow street area with limited telephoto opportunity except for the harbor. The 15-30, 24-70 and 200 is all I suggest. The 24-70 is likely the most useful.

Brookgreen Gardens is 1.5 hours north and lovely.

I was just there a month ago) really enjoyed the city and the Folly Beach. Was a very brief visit, but I had my K-1, DFA 15-30, 28-105, Tammy 70-200 2.8 and a fast prime, but I used the 15-30 throughout the whole visit (except for one shot of the bridge lol).

The spot overlooking the bridge (I believe I was on the Remleys Point, on Mt. Pleasant side) is excellent for sunsets.

If interested my album is here:

Clearly the 15-30 and the 24-70 as Charleston is rife with landscape and architectural opportunities. The 85 and the 90 are largely redundant and less likely to be useful anyway. The 200 might come in handy so I'd probably take it. In your position I would probably take the 2 wide angle zooms and the 200 along with a lightweight tripod and remote release, A Flash could be useful if you have room.

Charleston has LOTS to take pictures of this time of year, both indoors and outdoors. I would decided whether I am primarily going to be shooting indoors or out, and how much time to I have to allocate to pictures. Also depends on where I will be staying and how I am traveling. If you have the opportunity to hook up with another photo enthusiast from there, they make great guides for what you are interested in. You will discover far more, and way faster than doing it on your own.

You may have almost everything you will need. The only other lens may be a telephoto if you want to take birds/wildlife/alligators in Middleton gardens. This is a definitely worth it trip outside of town, especially if the azaleas are in bloom when you are there. Otherwise around town your 24-70 and FA 50 are likely to get the most use, followed by the DFA 15-30. You may not need anything else.

I go the other way

what is it I can transport

if no limitations why not bring it all

now the limitations might be on several levels

1 I can transport X by car

2 I can transport X - Y by air with carry on

3 once I get there, I can transport only by foot

x - y - z

your list of gear gets smaller and smaller

I hope that is clear as mud

Which is you favorite lens, the lens that you leave on your camera for photos at a moment's notice? Take that one.

Unless your family is the type that says, "why don't you go off and take some picutures while we sit here" you are probably going to be limited to what pictures you can take while out and about walking around and seeing the sights. Do you really want to lug all that gear, and stop and change lenses often? If so, Take the 24-70 and the 50mm, and enjoy.

It depends on how much "slow photography" time you'll have (i.e., time by yourself or your family has a high tolerance whilst you muck about setting up a shot).

1. Lots of slow photography time: bring everything.

2. No slow photography time: ditch the tripod, filters, and manual focus lenses. Definitely bring the 24-70 and probably the 15-30 because zooms are faster to use. You might want the DA 200 for telephoto opportunities. Whether you bring the flash depends on how important it is to you for lighting control and dim lighting -- otherwise the high ISO and high DR capabilities of the K-1 make the flash less important.

Have fun!

My 65 year photography journey ends with the KP !

I have always had a deep rooted passion with photography from a very young age of about 12.
It all started when I watched a gentleman spend a couple hours composing a shot overlooking the Missouri River with a large field camera in Sioux City Iowa.
The Gentleman's name was Lee Russell , and he worked for the Sioux City Tribune that summer in 1941.

Mr Russell also had a small photography studio he shared with another photographer downtown next to the Barber shop that my father frequented.
It seems Mr. Russel had noticed a young girl intently watching him work on several occasions. She had endless questions about the "How" , "What" , and "Why" of capturing images with such a large and strange device.
Little did I know they were both members of the Homeless Mens Bureau and sat on the same county committee every month.

One day the following Spring my father came home with a small package just for me ! I was just tuning 13 and it was 1942 . Times were really tough back then and any gift was very hard earned. Mr Russell's enlightenment had somehow prompted my father to buy it for me because of my fascination with his photography work.

When I opened the package I could hardly believe my eyes , my very own Zeiss Ikoflex Camera !
I was in another world , and still can remember running around town doing every imaginable task just to buy more film. Mr Russel introduced me to processing that year , oh what a smelly affair !

My first Pentax was purchased for me by my Husband the day he proposed marriage about ten years later in 1953. He was a very smart man , and knew a simple engagement ring just wouldn't do it for this Lady, Ha ha !
It was a Pentax Asahiflex. Yes , it did the trick ! I married him the following week and stayed that way for over 62 years until his death a few years ago.

I have owned nearly every Pentax made to date , and used the heck out of every one of them. From the Asahiflex to the Spotmatics , H-1 , EX , MX , LX , PZ1 , and some I have even forgotten the names of.
The one model I never used or owned was the K1000. I dont know how that one slipped past , but it did.

I made the switch to digital a few years back with a new Pentax K30. That turned out to be the very first unhappy experience with any Pentax. It kept breaking down and getting sent back for repairs repeatedly.
I finally got disgusted with it and gave it to a young man in Showlow Arizona that knew what the problem was and said he could fix it . Good riddance !

And now this leads me here to this KP forum.
After the brief love affair with the K30 , and a replacement K5 that I used for nearly 5 years.....I saw the KP.:D
As soon as I saw the picture on B&H last year I knew I was going to investigate.
When I finally got one in my hands while in their store last year it was all over with , I bought one.
It has everything cosmetically that I could want. It looks like a Camera design from decades past. Somewhat of a cross between a 67 and a LX ! That is so Sexy to me !
I really liked my MZ-S film body , but this KP far outshines it too.

The features are so lovely too. I originally wanted a K-3II before handling the KP , but with a different screen that articulates , but no such luck.
When nothing new looked like it was in the works , I went ahead and bought 1 more of the KP models , so now I have 2.
I knew when I saw the looks and specs that this was MY camera , my very last camera.

Im using one PK body heavily , and keep one for a spare to avoid going through anything similar to the K30 fiasco ever again.
Have since sold , donated , and gifted all my old film bodies and gear , and even the K-5.
I did keep all my M42 Pentax lenses and K mount Pentax lenses that Ive acquired over the years.
Of course my old Zeiss isnt going anywhere , nor the Asahiflex my husband caught me with...Haha.

This Old Lady may only shoot in JPG , but the KP is HelenJo Approved !

It may be a little heavier than what you're looking for, but I love my Benro Adventrurer TAD28A. It's sturdy enough for a K-1 with a 70-300mm zoom and it extends to nearly 6 feet. It travels well enough but I probably wouldn't want to take it backpacking.

The "Like New" K-3 II + "Like New" Battery Grip + 2 yr Mack Warranty that my family bought me for Christmas cost less than that "bargain 6D".

That 6D's "incredible FF image quality" has a DXO sensor score of 82, similar to (and even less than) some APS-C cameras.

I wonder if any of those D800's made it to either of Nikon's recalls?

Why not compare the D7500 with the K-3 II? They are the more similar rivals. The KP is on its own path.

Pentax makes very good-looking DSLR's.

Edit: I don't mean to imply that the deals the OP found aren't good. I just don't find them persuasive.

K-1 L Bracket

Well i got ones of these last week, and so far so good.

The two lugs that stick up from the baseplate fit perfectly just below the LCD screen, and the L section fits snugly on the side. Together these ensure that once atached the K1 is not going to swivel on the arca mount if you turn your ball head so the camera is in the portrait position. I was having problems with movement in the portrait position with a heavy lens (D-FA 24-70) when using a simple arca plate design, so this appears to be well thought out.

This mount has the arca attachment on the L section too, so you could simply mount the camera directly in a portrait position. However as the L section is attached to the main plate by a single allen bolt, I am not convinced that resonance from the shutter would not be an issue if used this way. I will do some testing to find out. But as I said above, simply move the camera through 90 degrees using the ball-head of your tripod head and the K1 is kept firmly in place so this is not a real issue.

Battery and rubber terminal cover are accessible when attached, but the headphone and microphone covers are obscured. If you do limited video with the k1 , this won't be an issue.

Only downside is the plate attaches to the camera via an allen bolt, which means you need to keep the supplied key with you if you want to remove it while out shooting. I may try and see if I can fit a handle/coin-slot screw instead. Having said that i have found when hand holding the camera with the mount attached that it is less obtrusive than the standard size arca plate that came with my Gitzo tripod, so this shouldn't be a practical issue.

I ordered it from the Polish website on a Monday and it was delivered to me in the UK on the Friday by UPS.

I would recommend it.
