K10D shutter not firing or mirror lockup for sensor cleaning

I tried selling the parts off my K100D following your suggestions, I got rid of the sensor/SR block and focus screen. For 8 weeks I had 2 white solenoids listed at £20 each but no one was interested.......must be a UK thing. I think I'll just leave the K10 intact for now.
Thanks

If memory serves right there is no need to go near the capacitor, just take the battery out first and handle it carefully.

Sorry to hear about your issue, I know what it's like when a camera fails.

There are others on here who know more than me about Pentax dslr's but one thing we will agree on is NOT to touch a replacement green solenoid.
From the K-30 up to the K-70 all have green solenoid issues except that the K-70 from 2021 are supposed to be ok......but I stand to be corrected if I've got the year wrong.

I think I'll give Pentax a wide berth from now on and look for a cheap Canon 600D again, that gave me no problems in 5 years.

Ye I'm thinking the worst now. Left the battery out overnight but it's just the same this morning. I listened again to the hum/whir and really can't tell if it is the SR block or something else.

Remembering back to when I took a K100d apart, to get to the front workings you need to come in from the back, I wasn't too bothered how I took it apart because I had already salvaged the useable parts.

Thanks for you help, I think I'll just have to put it down to bad luck.......that's 2 cameras this year!

Tried with two batteries, one Pentax one third party both fully charged.
When you turn the camera on everything seems normal, dust removal, rear screen top screen etc, you point the camera and AF is as quick as ever, you get the confirmation beep then press the shutter that's when nothing happens apart from the whirring noise which having listened to it is not the noise that the SR block makes and it always lasts 2 seconds.
As I said earlier even the green button doesn't do anything now with the aperture mechanism whether a lens is attached or not nor will the shutter work in M mode without a lens attached.

One thing of note, this is the first time I had used continuous shooting mode, I must have fired off 20-30 tracking the bird around the garden, I've always used single and very far apart in the past. The more I think now having taken apart a K100D in the past that something might have gone wrong in the cogs and gears area mechanism for the mirror /shutter workings and I'm hearing something jammed up.

Welcome to the K10D club.....but enjoy it while it works........I started another thread here as mine stopped working today.

I have in the past owned a K100D alongside a Canon 600D, both had 50mm lenses and if I had to pick I would say the K100D for normal use, the Canon was used for its twisty flip lcd and ground level photos.

Last year having been without a camera for a while I bought a K10D off ebay for £65 body only, mint condition with 8,000 on the shutter and have had my faithful 50mm M f/1.7 on it most of the time but I have bought and sold a lot of lenses most of which were cheap and real howlers. Last week I bought a mint boxed Sigma 100-300 for £13 off ebay which I was trying out today and liking very much when the shutter stopped firing.......!

I would say enjoy the camera for what it is and don't compare it to Canon......like I did......but in my opinion the Pentax ccd rendered better skintones on the natural setting and the images still look good in the present day.

I was using my K10D with a Sigma AF lens tracking and following a Robin around my garden when all of a sudden the shutter wouldn't fire. I had been using bb focus and firing off when I got the confirmation beep. I turned the camera off then back on but all I get when I press the shutter button is a quiet whirring sound (about 2 seconds) coming from inside.......it sounds like something vibrating. I then tried a 50mm mf lens where I then found the green button wasn't working either neither is the optical preview method, finally tried the sensor cleaning and the mirror wouldn't lift up, I did raise the mirror and the shutter curtains are shut.

Any suggestions what could have happened, the camera had been working fine and it has a shutter count of 11,864

Tried battery removal but just the same also tried a wired remote but still nothing

Ahhh....Brexit. That's enough said about that.

There's been no interest on my listing for the past two weeks, nobody must need a white solenoid at present.

Just trying to recoup my loss on the K100D with the leaky battery.

I think it's time to close this chapter on the K100D and just get rid, since the camera is already apart I'll get some photos taken of the various bits and get them on to ebay next weekend.
No doubt there is someone out there who just wants a top assembly or rear screen for a fiver etc without having to bid on a whole camera.

Thanks for your knowledge and help.

A load of bits now on the ebay UK

Well that didn't go as I'd hoped I used a cotton bud soaked in white spirit to soften all of the residue and got 90% off, it was then I noticed a black wire had came off the the top of the battery compartment inside (I think). I removed the solenoid, it slides freely and just tried the batteries back in using the bottom door cover..nothing happened but it got hot very quick and I could smell the spirit, thinking there's a short somewhere and that black wire needs soldered back on. I don't have any soldering knowledge so now I think I've got a parts ornament......pity

Well I took the plunge now rather I hadn't, slow and methodical got the result but it was worse than I expected. It seems the corroded batteries had did a lot of damage severing connections also that solenoid looks white to me.

I did follow your thread and used 18mm f/3.5 = black. 18mm f/22 ok, 55mm f/5.6 black, 55mm f/40 ok...ish. Manual mode with a manual lens all are fine. I am a little reluctant (for fear of breaking it) to open it up, I might just accept it as a manual camera for now as it still fluctuates between battery full, half and depleted with newly charged eneloops, this may be down to the leaked batteries which may have caused damage inside. I want to upgrade to v1.02 but because of the battery messages I don't want to try in case it turns off. I'll give it another day sitting with the batteries in and see if anything changes

Ye could be but I've had a good look at all of the screws using a magnifying glass and they all look new and untouched, mind you the camera looks brand new too with only 377 shots. I'll let it sit for a few days with fresh batteries in and see hat happens then

K100D Aperture Solenoid Failure ?

A long time since posting so here we go

Just got a K100D of ebay uk advertised for parts. The seller was true in the description saying the batteries had leaked, the top screen and in the viewfinder showed mixed up numbers and letters also that it took dark photos in av, auto etc.
I gave the battery compartment a thorough clean out and put in 4 fresh Eneloops, the camera fired up no problem. I attached an 18-55 kit lens, AV mode,f/8 auto focus worked and snap.......a black picture, hmmm ! So then I remembered the advice on here to check for solenoid failure and set it to 18mm at f/22 the photo came out fine, at 55mm and f/45 ? the photos were all correctly exposed. Just to check I tried another kit lens and got the same results, however the seller also said it was fine in manual so a 50mm lens in manual mode at various apertures and using the ae-l button as the green button all produced properly exposed images. So is this the solenoid that has failed ? I was always under the impression that this model was safe from the dreaded problem, if it is that so be it I'll use it in manual.

Just to add the camera cost £15 and has a shutter count of 377
