Thanks. I have the KP and the SMC FA 1:1.4 50mm.I am hoping to get some images of children near outdoor lighted Christmas trees and other lighted ornaments. Should be no more 2-3 feet deep. I was attempting to set up around 12-15 feet away. My problem was that per internet advice- for greater depth of field, if the nearest object in the scene is 3 feet away then focus on something 6(double the distance of the near object) feet away manually or using autofocus and then switch to manual to prevent refocusing by the camera. I have not achieved a significantly deep dof using that approach. I was using f9 to allow lower iso and shutter speed of 1/100. Perhaps if I use f11 and increase the iso to 100-6400 and manually focus on one of the children then step back a few feet.

Hello. I am struggling with achieving a good setting for a low light group photo. Tried using what I understand to be zone focusing with poor results? Tips please. Buddy

Thanks for your comment SSSGGeezer. Additionally, the KP is reported to excel in jpeg and I would prefer to take full advantage of its capabilities and not use RAW editing at all if possible.

Action gray card

I am enjoying my new KP. I am curious about use of a gray card or other methods of setting up the camera for accomplishing the same thing. What is the best way to set up the camera for using a gray card? Any tips on setting custom white balance and adjusting temperature settings?
As I understand it the card is meant to help with color rendering not simply exposure but any further clarification would be appreciated. Is it an accurate statement that a light meter or the camera's meter only detects light generally, not the coolness or warmth of the light?
I have not found a good tutorial on the forum but I certainly could have overlooked it. One you tube video I found somewhat helpful described simply taking a picture of the card and locking the exposure or setting the camera manually to the exposure settings shown on the camera display but it does not identify the setting to use when taking the picture. Should that matter?
What about using a light meter with the card? We are metering with the camera after all correct? Again, metering is about light not necessarily color.
What about the green button?
So much to learn.
Thanks for any help.

KP setup for quick adjustment from portrait to group photos

Thanks everybody. Will someone comment on the selection of spot vs multiple point focusing? Seems that this should change depending on the subject. Does this have as much bearing when the camera is set up for essentially zone focusing and not for focusing on a subject and blurring out the background as one might choose to do when shooting a portrait?

The thread title says it. I am still learning about my KP. This question is basic to photography technique and there are probably multiple ways to approach this but I am going to ask for advice. Do you experienced photographers use program mode and simply adjust the aperture for varying depth of focus? I want to be prepared for a group setting and I am certain that some individual portrait opportunities will present. Thanks

I have had my KP for only a few days. The first picture left me stunned at the low light capability of the camera. I am re-reading the Forum review of the camera and looking forward to trying out the recommended settings. Just now I looked through the camera with power off into a well lit room in my house and the brightness was what I would expect. When I turned the camera on the view finder went black and I can see nothing through it, I can only see what I am pointing at on the live view screen. What's up?

Thanks to all. No comments on the 16-85 compared to the 18-55? Who has the best price for a KP body only you guys are aware of? In that case I would use my 16-85 and buy a 35mm prime for my daughter? I have been told more than once that learning w a prime lens is a pretty good approach when learning about photography.

I want to move up from my K50 and I am considering the KP. Online stores eg Adorama have a few bundles for very little more money; one with an 18-55mm and one w a 50mm lens that was noted in the forum in May. The 18-55 lens is included. I have the 16-85mm F3.5-5.6 ED DC WR. If I get a bundle I could give the 18-55 along w the K50 to its new owner. What would be a good quality 35mm to add to the departing K50? It's all going to my daughter. I wonder about keeping the K50 as a second/backup camera but I am imagining that there are better options as features have changed since the K50 was introduced. Also, any thoughts on a purchase now or will I likely regret not waiting for new version of the K-3 which some writers on the forum indicate will be out soon? Thanks for any guidance.

50 mm prime

When I purchased my K50 body I started with one prime lens the SMC Pentax-FA 1:1.4 50mm. I understand that this lens is compatible with the K1 in case I acquire one later. I have a Rikenon 1:2 50mm that came with a Ricoh 35mm film camera. The Rikenon is a highly thought of lens from what I have read including comments in a previous post I have been researching other 50mm primes and have learned of the SMC Pentax-M 50mm F1.7 and 2.0. Any comments on a comparison of the the 2 lenses I have and the M lenses? I understand that some old Pentax lenses are increasing in value and price. Currently the M lenses run from 10 dollars to around 70 dollars on ebay but I don't want to add a lens if its not likely to add to my capabilities regardless of price. I will likely use one or more of these on a Fuji X-E2s as well. Thanks for any guidance.

ISO on the K50, printing from Lightroom

Sorry that I wasn't clear. This is what I've been told; the kids and sports modes are essentially shutter priority with a fast shutter and the other settings adjusted to fit, many times giving you a large aperture which limits your depth of field. This is not the typical zone focus with a deep depth of field approach that many advocate for street photography. The bigger question is whether my K50 will produce good images across the iso range to allow options no matter what I'm taking pictures of. Are you setting your iso range and using auto iso? Have you found an upper limits of around 6400 as acceptable iso? What camera?

I am interested in feedback on a couple of questions.
I continue my learning process in photography. I have used resources in print, on DVD and on the internet regarding principles of how to approach various situations. One source who uses a professional level Nikon suggests using aperture priority the vast majority of the time. He suggests varying the iso across a very broad range to allow that approach. The other sources who use Fuji, Leica and the Ricoh have to do primarily with street photography which in my case would more likely be street festivals, music festivals and the like. Again the advice is to crank up the iso to maintain the high aperture and shutter speed of 1/250 or faster that seems to be a common approach for that setting. As you more experienced folks know, the scene selection mode settings for KIDS and SPORTS uses a very fast shutter but with big holes in the lens. What I am finding first hand is that my K 50 in my hands gives poor image quality when I do so. I have read that the noise reduction system of the camera is apparently one of the few knocks against it, I would appreciate any comments on users experience with the K 70 at the higher iso settings compared to the K 50. Any comments in general are welcome. I bought my K50 around a year ago when the prices were down in the 300 dollar range for the body only so I don't have a huge investment in the camera itself and I already have a few lenses.
The other question I have is for advice on a shortcut from Lightroom to online printers. I have had no success finding a tutorial produced by Adobe for anything besides printing on your own printer and I don't have one and don't want to buy one.
Thanks as always. Happy Holidays. Buddy

Are there any particular set up pointers for the Yongnuo flashes and the Nikon and Canon version TR triggers on a Pentax? This stuff is new to me. Any experience with the Phottix Ares? They seem priced right and good reviews.

I have a Vivitar 285 HV that I want to use off camera. Any advice on how it compares to the Lumopro LP 180 that is recommended on the Strobist Lighting tutorial? Any recommendations for an alternative. Also considering the Phottix Ares remote trigger units. Thanks, Buddy

Working with a product other than Lightroom would be easy enough since I have the free products as stated. If I don't upgrade/change cameras, how much am I missing if I purchase software that can't be upgraded? How often and how much does the software actually change? At the price I can buy a new disc every year for about the same money. How about a stand alone cloud backup?

What about Lightroom 6 in disk for around 140 dollars as opposed to the CC subscription-at 120 dollars per year-for both cameras? Is a cloud backup of some type advisable?

Hello. I have using my Pentax K50 for around 9 months. I have taken 100s of images though I have only printed a few that I considered good. I read a very interesting post from back in 2012 by imageman which I can't locate so I will paraphrase, in which he wrote that a DSLR is intended to collect date for processing to create images and prints that are superior to those that have not been processed, unlike a point and shoot which records an image that is nearer a finished printable product without processing. I suppose its by sheer luck that the images I printed were JPEG images processed on Picasa.

I have a computer that I plan to use exclusively for photography to keep everything in one place. Before I purchase Photoshop or another product I want to try the software that is free with the 2 cameras I have. I plan to begin using Silkypix 3.0 that came with my Pentax and the free download from Sony Capture One Express 9 for processing images from my Sony RX 100. Will these products only recognize and process images from one or the other camera? I plan to backup and order prints of my saved images. Am I being unnecessarily complicated in my approach to processing?

I have not made all of the recommended basic setup applications recommended in the forum article on the K50 and I plan to do so but I would appreciate your comments on an observation.
Auto mode gives poor images as indicated by the histogram and live view. M mode is much better. M which should stand for "meter with the Green button then take the picture" and given my current skill level gives the best images as indicated by the histogram and the best live view images when reviewing images. However that leads back to the post by imageman so I suppose I should not make too much of unprocessed images.
Thanks for any help you can provide.

Buddy

I was referring to the Pentax lens. The absence of the more extensive numbering on the new Pentax compared to the Rikenon threw me and my unfamiliarty with old vs new in general didn't help. I think skodadriver answered the question in an earlier post to this thread and I glanced over it. I have obtained a copy of Photography by London, Stone and Upton today so I can get some self help. Thanks to everyone for the guidance.

As for my other question re the dof scale, I will assume that the bars to the R of the prominent vertical bar represent 8 16 and 22 so this lens does have adequate information to perform zone focusing and hyperfocal distance focusing. The red dot has to do with infrared film. Is this correct?
Also, will someone comment on the history and what distinguishes Rokinon and Rikenon?
