K-3 or K-5 II?

I somehow lost my K-3 eyecup in the field a few years ago. If you pull straight upwards it will pop right off. I think I accidentally hooked it on my bag or something. Bought a new one for about $25 and moved on. So maybe not too odd to loose one. I bought a K-5 IIs when The K-3 was just released. When it arrived I changed my mind, did not open it, sent it back and ordered the K-3. I never looked back and feel I made the right choice. Still shooting with that K-3 after more than 8 years.

I currently have a K5IIs. I have owned K3 and K1 as well. K3 is the better camera but in my opinion the K5IIs has the better image. I know this may not be a popular opinion but I have used the images produced by all my Pentaxes for paid work and I will put the images produced by the K5IIs against any camera out there. With that said the K5IIs is very slow when it saves images to the SD card, I have tried the fastest SD cards and still no difference. When I first got the K5IIs back in the days, it had the wow. But when I compare it to the newer offerings, it falls short in responsiveness. The price difference you are quoted for each camera seems to be very close. Choices for me are better camera or better image!! You choose. BTW, from my first K5IIs to now, I have owned a total of five Pentax bodies and a bunch of lenses and have NEVER had any need for service as my Pentaxes have been super reliable. Maybe I was one of the lucky ones, or I took care of my gear and did not abuse them!!

You can't go wrong with either of them.

K-3 or K-5 II?

Go for the K-3. I have access to a K-5.... it's been used for maybe 100 images since I got the K-3 6 years ago. I have one pelican case that the K-5 fits that the K-3 doesn't. When I want to use that case, I take the K-5. There's nothing else I can think of that would inspire me to take the K-5. Slightly smaller, and more compact. But apart from that, the K-3 turned out to be an absolute workhorse. My wife still uses her K-5ii, so I'm definitely not saying you can't get by. But the new lens mount, the KAF4 is not compatible, so how functional it will be in the future is open to question.

I had to decide between a K5 II and the K3 when I decided to upgrade from my K200D. Both were still available new and there was a significant price difference. I liked the reports of how good the K-5's 16MP sensor was but in the end I went for the K-3 more than anything because it allowed focus peaking, but also because of improved AF. I like manual focus lenses and shooting at wide apertures so I need to be able to focus precisely.

Focus peaking is taken for granted now but not then. I would recommend checking for everything that you don't really want to lose as the K-5 II is old enough that it may be missing some.

This may be an unpopular opinion, but I'd go with the K5II (I own both, btw).

K3 sometime has mirror runaway. It's said to be fixed by firmware, but for me it still happens, especially when using long exposures or interval shooting.
K5II images look better without noise reduction. K3 has lots of chroma noise and I found myself dialing up NR in post more than i would've liked.
AF in K3 isn't head and shoulders above. Same for metering.
Dual card slot also isn't that much a advantage because buffer is small on both.

Had K3 (pre-loved) for over a year - mirror runaway once, no other issues, and we are very happy together (just signed a pre-nup).

KS-1 exif lens info

As Adam noted above, the camera writes a numeric code into the makernotes section of the EXIF and always writes something, even if the lens does not pass it an ID code through the mount data contact (e.g. "0 0" for no lens detected, "1 0" for K or M series, "2 0" for A series). Note that with very few exceptions, only auto-focus lenses pass a code to the camera. If you are not seeing a lens name, the most likely cause is that the software you are using does not support that feature or lacks a name in its look-up table for the code that is there.

Have you recently changed software for reading EXIF?

Something like this would normally only happen if the electrical connection with the lens is lost. In such a case, you'd also see F-- in the viewfinder and AF wouldn't work.

It could also be a software issue- how/where are you reading the exif? Have you tried uploading a photo through this tool to see if the tags are there? Lens exif is a little bit tricking because the camera doesn't actually store the lens name, but rather a code, so it's up to the software to figure out what that code means.
