Welcome to the forum! :) Used K20D was my first Pentax DSLR too. I still have it, use it and like it very much. You can set everything manually, but you can as well rely on automatic P (Program) mode with Auto ISO (100..2000) and embrace exposure compensation [+/-]. That camera tends to underexpose in standard conditions, so what I can see in your pictures is expected behavior. Try +0,7EV and you'd get more light, color, vibrance and life to the photos. Enjoy! :)

Do you mean JPG straight out of camera? Sure you can set that. Moreover, Pentax has got several adjustments, how your B&W jpeg will be created. Color filter simulation, toning (blue/sepia), contrast, sharpness. The newer the camera, the more extensive settings.

I'm the old chap, using film since mid-eighties, developing B&W sometimes and hardly ever watching pictures on my smartphone - and I want that camera. How's that even possible? ;-)

My ME-Super is still on duty, but I'm anyway eager to buy that new half-frame camera.
I'm expecting decent quality gear for the price of medium-tier smartphone. Let's say 300$...

I once tried. Wanted light-weight and long-lasting power source for my *ist DS. No way! The battery indicator flashed rapidly and the camera refused to work. Checked the voltage: all were slightly above 1.7V.
I run the DS on Eneloops or Ladda (from IKEA). No issues whatsoever. Totally reliable.

I'd say, the 12-24 would be the main lens on my trip to Switzerland. Then 28-105 as a longer-reach supplement, at times.

You'll order one directly from Japan. You live by the harbour, don't you? ;)

My favourite cameras to shoot are recently ME-Super + K 50mm and *ist DS + M 28mm. Mostly in manual mode and f/5.6 .. f/8.0. So the joy of photography isn't related to latest sophisticated tech. This new camera could nicely fit in that concept. I can't wait to see official annoucement with availability and pricing!

I subscribe to that. Probably that's why I like very much morning/sunrise photos from K20D. That extra ray of the sunlight ;-)

Yep, that's valid question. I'm sometimes wondering, should I collect all DSLRs that fit my D-BG2 and D-BG4 battery grips??? ;-)
Nevertheless, I agree, that sensor has pleasing output and it didn't deserve so much criticism as found on the Internet.

I've shot few rolls of film with MZ5n + DA35/2.4 and the results were gorgeous. It covers full frame. AF works just fine. Due to lack of aperture ring, in that combo P and Tv were available.

Ricoh is crazy enough to enter such project and to close it for any reason, but... ... and for me that's significant statement. They're going to deliver it one day. Well, I very much hope so ;-)

I've used both DA35/2.4 and DA50/1.8 with *ist DS and they are fully compatible with that ancient body (2004). This is not compatibility issue. Check for lack of contact, as The Squirrel Mafia says.

That was also coming to my mind. However, I would make different mix. One body with DA35/2.4 and another with f/2.8 standard zoom plus flash. I find DA35/2.4 to be great on any Pentax body (AF, quality, usability) while the DA50/1.8 is a bit moody. I wouldn't rely on the latter without much practice and patience.

Then keep it simple on the camera side. Use [P] mode with [Auto-ISO] and learn how to use exposure compensation [+/-]. Stick to central AF point or manual AF point selection. Save RAW files. And get yourself appropriate RAW developer software. You'll adjust your JPEGs later to your taste - white balance, colors, brightness, contrast, saturation and so on. I don't mean anything "professional". Good luck!
p.s. Why RAW? Because I never liked blue tones generated by K-x and K20D or yellowish tint of *ist DS pictures. In RAW they're not an issue anymore. And the corrections can be easily copied from one picture to another, so you don't adjust everything from scratch. Old cameras benefit much from RAW shooting, IMHO.

The only limited I own is HD DA21 f/3.2. And I'm wondering, how people could draw this, somehow negative, conclusion. OK, I wouldn't call that lens great for high resolution landscape photos, but for mid-range (I mean distance :) ) casual / social photography it's simply great. Colors, contrast and 3D-pop are what I like very much. It's tiny, inconspicuous, nicely crafted lens. Joy to use. And it delivers, definitely.
Worth a try.

I once tried K-x + Tamron 90mm Macro and that 12-MPix combo easily outresolved Epson V500 flatbed scanner. Was that better than the film itself? I don't know, but the results delivered really nice detail and tonality. I'd say your K-01 would be perfect for that task due to sensible LV implementation and great 16-MPix sensor.
Anyway, do your homework - make a test ;-)

DA 35 f/2.4 is a great lens for little money. It delivers nice colors and contrast, very good sharpness and I like the bokeh. I once wanted to replace this one with DA 40 f/2.8 Limited - for better build quality and Quick Shift Focus - but I quit, seeing many samples with rather busy/harsh/nervous bokeh. That was not to my taste. I stayed with plastic-fantastic 35/2.4 and I can recommend it.

Acquiring K-5 II didn't outshine my trusty K20D.
K-5 II is great machine, but I still have a soft spot for that old brick.

Speaking of specific scenarios - DA 55-300 makes my DA 50/1.8 and Tamron 90/2.8 Macro somehow redundant. But it's neither f/1.8 nor macro-enabled ;-)
Anyhow, very inspiring thread. Thank you!

I don't know K-1, I have older and less capable cameras. Hence, instead exact ISO value, I'd recommend:
(1) Expose properly. Underexposure is your enemy.
(2) Shoot RAW, so you can de-noise precisely in the software.
(3) Color noise and false colors are worse than just the grain.
(4) Don't bother too much, enjoy your great camera :-)
