It's funny that I was just looking at the new 55-300 lens and thinking of pre-ordering it for my K-3. Sure am glad I dug deeper.

Please count me in too.

DA*300 on k30

I agree with the others that the lens would be your best bet.

I will also throw out that you might even think about picking up a cheap Ebay lens just to see if you like the focal length before shelling out the $800+ for the DA* 300.
For example, I see a Sigma 70-300 for $99 and a Pentax FA 100-300 for under $20.

These lenses obviously have nothing on the DA* 300 (that lens is on my wish list too) but it might be an economical way to see how having that focal length affects your photography without a huge commitment.

I did exactly that. I bought an old Tamron 70-300 for $50 at a pawn shop. I wouldn't call it a great lens but I've enjoyed it enough to know that I need to leave space in my bag for the DA* 300.

Shooting baby or toddler pictures can be challenging. Often the parents are so focused on making sure that the time is well spent that big brother or sister feels left out.

I've found that bringing my old spare camera and making the older sibling my second shooter has several rewards: It keeps them involved in the process, makes them feel useful, and encourages an interest in photography. I always process the shots from that camera as well so they can see what they accomplished.

It's pretty fun to see someone start to get excited about taking photos.

I don't know about the hybrid part but my copy of this lens was stolen and I sure do miss it. You're in for a good time if that is half as much fun to play with as mine was.

So far I like the sigma quite a bit. I've not tested it as thoroughly as I hope to. It was pretty cold and crappy here today and I just got some random shots around the house.

My biggest fear when I bought it was that I would have the focus issues I have heard about But that doesn't seem to be he case. I need to do more testing though. Hopefully I'll have some interesting shots to post soon. I was also thinking of checking my local shops for some kind of test pattern I could hang on the wall for some testing

Very cool. What does Finn charge for modeling? It's obvious he's got some good experience. :-)

Tuning Notes

This is a photo I took a while back.

It's a composite done in camera with two exposures.

The first exposure was taken of a guitar machine head (or whatever that's called) with a macro-takumar 50mm F/4 lens on a tripod with continuous lights on either side of the guitar.

The second exposure was taken of some Christmas lights hanging from my door jam with an SMC 55mm F/1.8. I cut a circle of card stock with the shape of a note in the center and defocused the image to get the note-shaped bokeh.

Both shots were on manual so it took some experimentation to get the exposure right.

Once I had the image, I improved the contrast in Lightroom but the editing was fairly light.

Hello everyone. Like many here I've frequented the resources on the forums for some time but just signed up today.

I own a Pentax K-3 along with a few lenses. I consider myself an advanced amateur and I really love to get my camera out for just about any occasion.

I try to dabble in every type of photography I can but I probably take more than my fair share of landscapes and family photos but It's all fun and I want to try it all!

I look forward to interacting here after probably a year of lurking!

My current kit consists of:

Pentax SMC DA 18-135mm F/3.5-5.6
Pentax FA-77 F/1.8 Limited
Pentax SMC 500mm F4.5
Tamron 80-300mm F/something or other
I think somewhere I have a fungal 135mm F/2.5 in quarantine.

and some m42 screw mount lenses:

SMC 55mm F/1.8
Super Macro-Takumar 50mm F/4.0
SMC 35mm F/3.5
SMC 200mm F/4.0

I clicked the buy button today on a Sigma 18-35 F/1.8 but it wont be here until Saturday.

My go to lens right now is the 18-135 but I suspect that will change when the Sigma arrives. I love the versatility of the 18-135 but don't love the corner sharpness (or lack thereof). It'll definitely keep its spot in my bag for when the weather turns nasty though.
