I passed gas the other day, my wife looked at me and ask "what was that?". I told her my spare tire must have sprung a leak!

What about two of those little Flash Point zoom mini flashes from Adorama.Cheap enough on sale, have optical and wireless triggers, they come with a cheap stand for the remote flash. I'm no flash expert and haven't used them for any more than taking pictures of stuff and the dog. It took an afternoon to figure them out and get decent results. They are not going to light up a huge room but will give some directional light with a flash mounted on the camera bounced off the ceiling or a wall and another off the the side on a shelf or something. Just thinking a cheap and unobtrusive way to get some light. You might be able to get away with one set to optical slave triggered by your existing flash but not sure on that point.

Nice series, I saw my first live snake today. I've seen one or two smashed on the road. I'm quite a bit further north than you in Illinois.

On the deck eating his stored nuts, he's been in a fight or two, one gaping wound and some missing hair. Shot thru two pains of glass, it looks like a slight reflection in the middle of the image. I forgot to have the windows coated with the Pentax HD coating when I replaced them last summer.

It's less than $42 if you can upgrade, new interface, downloads "modules" if you have an odd image. I sharpened a focus chart and it downloaded a module for that, and something else and it was another module. I think it does amazing work on some images, I had a crab shot years ago in the shade. It was very blurry, now you can see detail in the image.
Here they are, nothing special but an example of what it can do. I've had it for years but just started using it. I'm not proficient with it yet.
The topaz sharpen one is on the top. I'm not sure if I used a mask to sharpen it or not. Also, if you don't like the effect all at once, you can run an image thru a couple times with smaller amounts of sharpening. This was one pass. I'm sure i can do better now.

Years ago, when I was young, not every family had 2 or 3 cars. Also there wasn't as much distraction as there is today. A lot less traffic back then. I didn't wear a helmet as a child but now I would feel naked and likely not ride if I forgot it.
Then again, I knew someone that wore a helmet all the time but went over the handlebars and broke her neck. There are no guarantees, that's for sure.

Something like this? I'm generally never aggressive enough with the crop.

And thank you for that Allen. I dug into the couch, car seats and everywhere else and came up short. This would be a dream lens for sure. Maybe I should start a go fund me page for the new lens.
Thanks for posting it.

A very timely post for me as well, I've almost decided the DFA 150-450 is the best option for me right now. Thanks for the comparison.

There is so much good information here, thanks to everyone that's responded to this. I've looked and searched and looked some more. I almost came to the conclusion to buy a Nikon D810 and the 200-500. They both get rave reviews and can be had used for under $2000 for the pair. I could put my FA*80-200 on the K5 and use the Nikon for the longer shot. Maybe I should consider the D7500 Crop sensor too. I have a couple items watched on evil bay with a few days to go. HOWEVER, just as I was typing this it occurred to me, what if for now, I got the Pentax af 1.7 adapter? That gets me to 510mm, granted its a little slower and then I could decide if 500mm was long enough. If not, maybe I get a 645 A*600mm and the adapter to PK mount. I see them around the $2000 price as well. Still not sure the 150-450 gains me anything over the current 420 I have with the 1.4 TC. Well, I guess it does get me to 630mm but at about F7 with the TC. So I ramble on about options, and really there are options. A D810 was what I was thinking about back when I decided to stay with Pentax.
So, after all that, let me ask this question, have any of you used the 1.7 AF adapter on the DA* 300mm F4? were the results reasonable?
Thanks for putting up with my indecision! or tightwaddness

Well, I spent the day examining the Nikon options, never thought I would do that. I still need to decide if that is something I want to do but sounds more reasonable after researching a little. A D810 in crop mode gets me the same (almost) field of view as on the pentax crop but I loose a few mega pixles off shooting a K5. The D7500 would likely be the best Nikon option. I have information overload on Nikon right now so may be wrong on that point.
The Mississippi is a little more narrow where we were, about 2000 feet wide. I told a friend I had never seen so many eagles in one place and she went over there. The eagles were on the same side as she was, so I need to go back. I know 600mm won't help with the cross river shots but would help getting them when they are fishing in the middle or closer.

I guess I left out the cameras I have, A K5 that doesn't get used, it hit the ground in Yellowstone and has something loose in it. I replaced it with a K5iis, I also have the original K3. I was thinking about upgrading the camera body but these are just fine. I've wanted longer glass for a while. Now I might be able to get something with out sharing a bed with the dog.
Great advice (and some nice images too) and some options I hadn't thought about. Not sure about getting a body just to have the lens, I'll have to think about that.

Yes tripod only or 90% of the time. I looked at the sigma 150-500, I didn't see the 600.
I did go back and look at the legacy Sigma glass, some highly rated stuff in there and also the price. I know I have to pay to play and so my problem.

I had forgotten about this lens, I'll check it out.
No need to list the reviews, I can check out the recommended lenses
Thanks

My wife and I went eagle watching a couple weeks ago. The eagles were mostly on the opposite side of the Mississippi river. They were mostly smallish birds with my 300. I have the DA 1.4 converter, that I forgot (didn't check to make sure it was on the lens when we left home). So my wife says "you need a longer lens"! Thats an invitation to get something looong.
I would like 600mm but truly I don't want to spend $4000 or $5000 on one.
The options I see are:
DFA 150-450 but that doesn't get me to 600 unless I use the converter. Used it can be had for around $15-1600.
A*600 f5.6 under $2000 but manual focus,
F*600 f4.0 I'd be happy with a well used one as long as the glass was good.
FA*600 f4.0 again well used is fine but the F and FA are well above what I want to or can spend.
Then there's the FA* 250-600, there's even one for sale here on the forum. Again well over what I want to spend.
I guess the K 135-600 and K500 would be options too but not sure it's what I want.
If you were spending your money and I'm retired so somewhat limited income, what would you do? Ideas? Have I over looked anything?
Currently my longest lens in the DA*300 + DA1.4 converter at 420mm.
Thanks

Yep Tulip tree, I have one in my yard, had one in the yard growing up. I just spent $4800 to have an over 120 foot tall one taken down. It had a 2 foot hole in the side you could see light thru and a nice lean towards the apartment house.
Nice picture by the way

Thanks for the comments, I may go back and look around when there isn't the white record keeper on the ground. I've been looking for these old houses lately. Maybe its because I know of several that aren't standing any more and I wish I had photographed them when I had the chance. This trip reminded me of another one I use to ride my bicycle past, need to see if that one is still standing. That was ten or fifteen years ago, time sure does fly by.

An old house in the snow, it's on private property so not much chance to change the view. This from the roadside, I like the snow on the roof and the curtain blowing out the window.

Here is a 9 image stitch of my bird of paradise bloom. I'd like to focus stack 3 or 4 images for each of the nine and see what that looks like. I did the 9 images up close to reduce the distracting background. A single image with a similar perspective really showed the trees and deck post.

That is a nice picture. I have a small weed patch with native plants farmers have been trying to eliminate for 100 years. Some of them are impressively hard to grow.

The Big Boy rolls into Washington Missouri. All these photographers were not there when I staked out my spot. I wish I had focused on a cell phone for a shot just to see what they got. I took other pictures and actually like this one due to the crowd and the phones.

This is about 15 miles from the finish of a century ride I did in Kansas The flint hills are not flat. I have discovered I like the bright colored bikes, my new steed is similarly colored. My brother took the shot as I rode by.
I was cooked and exhausted.
I use to carry a Pentax Optio in my jersey pocket to snap things I saw on a ride.

Thanks for all the nice comments. I posted this then found the thread about Topaz sharpen AI saving shots made with less than good glass. I think it saved this shot and this was made with really nice glass so useful for those slightly off shots too.
Thanks again
