I would not recommend a K-50: It is just as likely as the K-30 to develop the dark frame disease. I own a K-30 and a K-50 and they’ve both had it.

One of my geology classmates had a poster on her wall: “Civilization exists by geologic consent, subject to change without notice.” (The second phrase was in much larger letters.)

Standing in a parking lot, heard this horrible screeching. Turned, saw, snapped. Lumix LX5. I don’t think that trailer’s wheel survived.

This wasn’t a test; I haven’t run a proper test yet. It’s just a convenient example of the problem in regular use.

The neatest example: a two-frame burst, one underexposed, one correct, with the same values in program mode.
EDIT: I now see that the settings are NOT identical; the camera selected a higher ISO for the second frame.
I’m going to revisit the other problem frames and see if I missed something on the EXIF on those as well.

Having had both my K-30 and my K-50 repaired in the past for the Dreaded Aperture Failure, I was very concerned recently to see dark frames again popping up occasionally ...
But this time, it happens on both bodies with the 18-135 lens, and neither body with any other lens (I’ve used the DA L 50-200, the DA 55-300 and the FA 80-320 extensively with both during the same period, without problems.) Occam’s Razor would seem to suggest the problem is in the LENS. Has anyone ever run into this problem with this lens?
Further information:
Nothing strange happens while I’m actually shooting. I find the underexposed frames after the fact.
The EXIF data will show identical exposure settings for an underexposed frame and the properly-exposed image immediately next to it.
The lens looks perfectly fine and the mount looks perfectly clean (but I’ve wiped it carefully a few times anyway.)
My most-used lens, usually — I hope there’s a fix for this.

I may be misunderstanding the question, but I saw “macro” and “point & shoot mode” and I think what I would suggest you consider in addition to her using K3 + 18-135 as she does now, is a WG4 or similar compact point & shoot camera rather than another lens. It’s my first choice for macro most of the time; it really does a good job for that and I carry it as EDC as well as bring it alongside DSLR (for anything macro-ish that the 18-135 won’t reach.) The smaller sensor adds the advantage of greater depth of field for the macro shots.
(Speaking as a middle-aged woman with small wimpy wrists and a tendency toward backache after too much gear-lugging. For the majority of my serious shooting I use a K30 or K50 with the 18-135. If I’m going after birds I might also carry 50-200 or 80-320, but if I’m not pursuing birds I generally don’t use them. I do own a 100 macro M but I’d rather just use the WG4.)
