2018 Pentax Survey

Done (number 1459 now), but kind of confused about some of the things in the last section - e.g. status screen bit : all I want is a quick option to turn it on or off - can be quite irritating with it on, but miss being able to refer to it quickly. Not sure the boxes I ticked reflected that. Also had problems limiting myself to just 15 choices!
Thanks, nice, comprehensive survey. Looks like a lot of good work done to produce it, hope Ricoh/Pentax take notice.

Lack of money:(

Truth is, of course, that it is because they aren't doing those nice colours like they did on the KS1. Black and silver are so 60's:cool:

Survey with shutter count and aperture block or shutter failure.

...been thinking about this, and hindsight being a wonderful thing, think perhaps the serial number may have been useful in the survey in case there were problems with individual batches.
Also, could use (not misuse as suggested earlier) of the camera affect things. I haven't done much burst shooting, but have used HDR quite a few times. I don't understand the mechanism, so could be miles out in this, but as it is a mechanical failure (read a description of it but forget where) then it could be that the component does not reseat properly (or break?) if operated repeatedly, so for example a camera that has had a nice quiet life doing leisurely single shot work is less likely to fail than one used in burst mode / HDR or what have you. But that would only be if the aperture block was activated between shots in the burst / HDR and I don't really know.....

Pete

I've had my K50 for about 8 months (bought new, although judging by the date on the battery, 2014, fairly old stock) and shutter count is probably less than 1000. Nothing to report, so I'm not sure there is any value in my responding to the survey.
Before buying it I'd visited Pentax Forums quite often, but never really appreciated how prevalent this problem could be. Once I joined after buying the K50, somehow it has become a major issue in my mind, so much so that I rarely visit here - far too depressing reading about the likely future demise of the gear I had been looking forward to using as the K30/50 thread seems to be dominated by the problem. No way am I investing further in the Pentax system, I use mostly my old Praktica lenses and will consider future direction when it dies or get fed up with my limited lens line-up. If I'd done a bit more research here first I would have steered clear of the thing - talk about buyer's regret! That, along with the unbelievably short battery life (410 shots? - I wish, 150 more likely) suggests that next buy may not be Pentax, which is a shame as I used to use Pentax SLRs.
Sorry, rant over. I expect a number of people have been there, bought the T-shirt and so on, but Pentax's silence on the matter is in my opinion likely to put people who have bought into the system at entry level off from continuing with the brand.

regards
Pete

Black K50. However, that's what they were selling at a nice low price. Originally I wanted a blue K30. Secretly, I'd have loved a white K50 and a Darth Vader mask but SWMBO would not have been impressed, or the dull green for wildlife photography. Nearly bought one of the two-tone KS-1s (blue and white or rose and white) which were also going cheap but as they aren't WR got the K50 (black) instead. I enjoyed playing with the K50/Q colours on the Pentax site when they first appeared - specced some really nice (and horrific) combinations. I thought the purple/pink Q7 mentioned by Mamba909 was one of the nicest - sometimes the colours clash but not in that combination - but I don't think I'd have the guts to buy one.
Ah well, its probably all for the best. At least nobody notices someone wandering round with yet another black camera.

Praktica / Zeiss EDC M42 lenses.

Glad you approve of it:D It's funny, though, that it doesn't seem so long ago that the lenses were regarded 'in certain quarters' as being useful only as paperweights. The Flektogon looks like it will be most useful, but when I bought it (second-hand) I wasn't too keen on the 35mm viewing angle so didn't use it very much.

Hi wtlwdwgn - thank-you for your welcome. Will get round to adding some, but they're nothing special I'm afraid. So far I've just been testing and doing the micro-adjustment (got some nice pics of the warranty card, though!)

Many thanks, D1NO and Giklab. I'll just get on and use them then. I've tried a few macros with the Flektogon and they were fine, but I didn't retract the the AF screw - no damage done from the looks and behaviour, but will remember to do it from now on.

regards
Pete

Hi

I have some old M42 screw lenses that I used on my Praktica (PLC2) many years ago. I stopped using them with my Pentax SLRs but have recently resurrected them and they they look fine.

They are all the electric version, EDC, with the electrical contacts in the mount.

What I'm concerned about is will the contacts cause any damage to the K50 I have bought recently. I'm using the 'official' Pentax M42 adapter. On screwing the lenses on and off, I noticed that they left marks on the mount, but these came off with a wipe (well, of the sleeve of my jumper, actually). From checking elsewhere on this site, I gather it is a good idea to put the camera on MF to retract the screw drive before mounting them, but also, while the lens is going on the contacts go over the K50 contacts and wonder if that it likely to cause damage.

Does anybody here have experience of using these lenses long-term and have they caused any problems?

The lenses are Carl Zeiss Jena Flektogon 35mm f2.4, Pancolar 50mm f1.8, and a Pentacon 135mm 2.8. The first two are reputed to be very good, and I rather like the Pentacon too....

Your help would be appreciated!

regards

Pete

Hi
just joined, but have often looked at the site which I find helpful and informative.

I recently bought a K50 with the 18-55WR (kit version) and 35mm f2.4. In the past I used Pentax SLRs and still have a P30n and MZ5n complete with non-pop-up flash which I haven't got round to fixing as I don't use film any more. My old zooms, sadly, suffer from fungus, so I'm left with a 50mm f2 and some old Praktica lenses (oh, and a 2Xteleconverter by Vivitar). My 28-80 A lens still exists but I always hated it because it is so clunky and I'm so clumsy that it kept getting bumped into things.

Digital photography has been mostly with bridge cameras so this is my first DSLR.

Originally from the UK but now living in 'south-west' Brittany (Finistère), France. I look forward to joining in, and asking lots of dumb questions.
Oh, photography-wise, strictly amateur:)

regards
Pete
