Dented filter thread on my Pentax-M 50mm F1.7

To repair that, you will have to remove/unscrew the "beauty ring" (the ring with the writing on it) but, because the filter ring is bent, you're going to have a hard time (maybe impossible) getting that unscrewed. Once you get the beauty ring off, there'll be 3 screws underneath it, and then the filter ring comes off after you remove those screws.

You'd probably also need to get the parts to replace the bent filter ring.

Overall, probably not worth it, but it'd be a good learning experience :)...

Does the K-S2 have IR receiver on both front AND back?

Hi,

Thanks. That is kind of unfortunate, because I am looking for a remote trigger for shooting from a tripod, so I'd be at the back of the camera.

I was hoping that it might be able detect IR via maybe the viewfinder or something.

We tried using the image synch app, but it was hard to use, because you have to be looking at the tablet screen constantly, otherwise, you (or we) would miss the button.

Thanks again,
Jim

Hi,

I know that there is an IR receiver on the front grip, but is there a receiver that works from the back, e.g., that can be used when mounting the K-S2 on a tripod and triggering from the back?

Thanks,

K mount Adapter won't lock with Pentax FA 80-200

I've taking a more detailed look at the adapter, and I have a guess about what might be wrong.

When I try to mount the lens and turn it, at one point, I can see that silver knob move, very slightly. I think that is when the lock pin on the mount is entering the lock hole on the lens mount.

But then I can keep on turning the lens and I can see the know move slightly again.

I think that what is happening at that point is that the lock pin is coming out of the hole.

Looking at the pin more closely, the way that it is designed is that at the tip, it is slightly tapered, so I think that what is happening is that the pin is entering the hole on the lens mount (the tapered part of the pin), but the diameter of the body of the pin is (I am guessing) too large, so the pin cannot enter the hole completely.

Either that, or the tapered area of the pin is too long (i.e., it should be a smaller taper), so no non-tapered part of the pin "catches" on the hole, so it doesn't lock the lens.

---------- Post added 05-07-17 at 11:18 PM ----------

I just found I had another brand adapter, a Fotodiox, and I tried it with the same lens and it locks perfectly.

I checked the lock pin on the Fotodiox adapter and it is NOT tapered, so I think that that (the tapering) is the problem with the other adapter I have.

K mount Adapter won't lock with Pentax FA 80-200

Hi,

I recently received a K-mount adapter (New PK-M4/3 Adapter Ring for Pentax PK/K Lens To Micro 4/3 Olympus Panasonic M43 | eBay) and it works with most of my Pentax and K-mount lenses, except for a Pentax FA 80-200mm lens. That lens will not lock onto the mount.

I was looking at the lens, which has a plastic mount, and there is a small hole for the locking, so I'm not quite sure why this is a problem. Is this a known problem with this lens, or with FA mount in general?

Is there a way to get it to work? I've ordered another, different adapter to try, but it'll be awhile before it gets here.

Thanks,
Jim

EDIT: Here are pictures of the lens mount and the adapter:

This is the mound end of the Pentax lens. The hole where the locking pin is supposed to fall into is circled in red:

Strange out-of-focus problem with Canon FD-to-K mount adapter

Yes, I know, and I guess that it will stay with my mirrorless cameras now!

---------- Post added 05-03-17 at 06:24 PM ----------

Live view was similar - Actually it was kind of fuzzy in LV when I magnified, but the picture was really blurry.

I've re-seated the lens in the adapter several times and it's the same, so I guess I won't be using the FD lenses (I have two, including an f/1.2) with my Pentaxes.

Strange out-of-focus problem with Canon FD-to-K mount adapter

Hi,

I have a Fotodiox Pro FD-to-K mount adapter that i've had for awhile, but haven't used much, but this week I decided to try it with an FD f1.4 lens that I have with my "new" used K-S2.

When I mount the lens and adapter and look through the viewfinder, I can get things focused, but when I take a picture, it is really badly out of focus and also seems to have a lot of flare.

So I took the same FD lens and used an FD-to-M43 adapter to mount it on one of my Olympus mirrorless cameras, and it was perfect.

I did that several times, putting the lens on my K-S2 and trying it and then moving the lens on the Oly camera and that out-of-focusness and flaring just continues to happen.

Note that the FD-to-PK adapter has a lens in it, whereas the FD-to-M43 adapter is just a mechanical adapter.

Can anyone explain why this might be happening? What could be wrong with that FD-to-PK adapter? Why would it look all right through the viewfinder, but then the pictures would all be badly out-of-focus?

Also, is there some way to fix the adapter?

Thanks,
Jim

Using manual lenses with K-S2?

Hi Patrick,

Oh wow, now it's starting to make more sense and am glad to hear that it probably isn't the aperture block problem, since I just got this K-S2 off of Ebay this past week :)!

Thanks for the detailed explanations and discussions. It's been a long time since I was using manual lenses on Pentax, and in my memory, it just used to work correctly with my old K-r and K-x, but maybe that was just faulty memory.

Thanks again,
Jim

Using manual lenses with K-S2?

Hi Patrick,

I don't understand when you said "If you are dark then rotate the front wheel to slow down the shutter.".

I thought that I was selecting the aperture by physically turning the aperture ring on the lens, and then the camera was controlling/selecting the shutter speed. So if the camera is selecting and controlling the shutter speed, I don't understand what rotating the front wheel is supposed to do? Does that override the shutter speed that the camera is selecting?

Also, I kind of dread mentioning this, but I am getting a lot of all black pictures when I am in M mode.

Is that the aperture block problem?

Does that only happen when I have the lens is a manual lens and the camera is in M mode?

If it was the aperture block problem, wouldn't it also happen if I had non-manual/automatic lenses (I don't think that I getting black picture when I use automatic lenses).

Using manual lenses with K-S2?

Hi,

I already found that page. That was what I was referring to, where it says:

"K-30, K-50, K-500, K-70, K-S1, K-S2 and K-01 users: make sure you also set your green button "action in M/TAv Mode" to Tv SHIFT. This is found under the button customization menu (page 3 of the main menu) on the K-01 or as a custom function on the K-30, K-50 and K-500. On the K-S2 and K-70, look under the e-dial programming sub-menu under button customization in the record menu.

Finally, ensure that auto ISO is disabled."

I don't understand " "action in M/TAv Mode" to Tv SHIFT." (I don't see a Tv SHIFT" and also I can't see where to disable auto ISO?

Thanks,
Jim

EDIT: Also, although I don't quite understand what I'm doing, it seems to work better with the camera in "Tav" mode and I set the aperture on the lens and just click to take the picture, without using the green button? By "better", I mean the exposure seems to come out correctly.

EDIT 2: Ok, I think I see what they mean by M/Tav Mode to Tv SHIFT, i.e., for the M on the left, set the green button to TvSHIFT and for the Tav on the left, set the green button to TvSHIFT.

And for disabling the Auto ISO, set the ISO to a fixed number, e.g., 1600.

However, when I try that, and with the camera in "M" mode, if I close the the aperture, e.g., to 22, and then press the green button to set the speed, the pictures get really badly underexposed.

What am I doing wrong?

Thanks,
Jim

EDIT 3: FYI, if after setting all the above, I put the camera into Tav mode, it seems to set the speed correctly, even without needing to press the green button.

Hi,

Can someone explain how to use a completely manual lens, e.g., a Pentax-M 50mm with the K-S2?

I have been searching and sites say to (a) set the green button to Tav Shift (but I don't see a choice for Tav Shift) and (b) disable auto ISO (but I don't see where I do that)?

Also, in this case of the Pentax-M, the lens aperture seems to stay wide open. Is there a way to shoot, say and f/8 and let the K-S2 figure out the shutter speed automatically (even using the green button)?

Thanks,
Jim

K-S2 lens information in Image EXIF?

Hi,

For the record, besides using the exiftolgui, which can be somewhat tedious (trying to find the info with all those attributes), on Windows, I can find the Lens info on all files in a given directory using:

exiftool | findstr /C:/"Lens Type" /C:"Lens ID" /C:"File Name"

is the path to the directory where a bunch of image files are stored.

(note: On my system, I had renamed the exiftool(-k).exe to exiftoo.exe).

Example:

E:\EYE-FI-FLASHAIR-CARDS\FLASHAIR6\PHOTOS\2017-04-30>exiftool E:\EYE-FI-FLASHAIR
-CARDS\FLASHAIR6\PHOTOS\2017-04-30 | findstr /C:"Lens ID" /C:"Lens Type" /C:"Fil

Lens Type : A Series Lens
Lens ID : A Series Lens
File Name : IMGP1801.JPG
Lens Type : A Series Lens

File Name : IMGP1807.JPG
Lens Type : smc PENTAX-DA 35mm F2.4 AL
Lens ID : smc PENTAX-DA 35mm F2.4 AL

I'm not quite sure about the ones that are listed as "A Series". I think that those were originally actually showing a lens type, but I was messing with exiftoolgui earlier and I think I made it change the exif info somehow for those files.

Also, you can put the above into a batch file (e.g., "EdifLensInfo.bat" like this:

exiftool "%1" | findstr /C:"Lens ID" /C:"Lens Type" /C:"File Name"

and then you just run this:

EditLensInfo.bat

and it outputs the lens info for all the files in that .

Hi all,

FYI, I found that the exiftool(-k) command line tool does show the lens type info (if it's available in the image file) and there is also an exiftoolGui that runs the command line tool.

The lens info shows up as "LensType" but you have to select "Maker" or "All" to have "LensType" appear.

Also, is there a way to get the K-S2 to record the lens information in the images' EXIF data?

Thanks,

---------- Post added 04-30-17 at 08:38 AM ----------

I tried attaching one of my image files to a post here and in Preview if I click EXIF it DOES show the lens info, but I cannot find a way (and app on my PC) to show that information. So far I tried the native Windows info, ExifPro, and PhotoMe, and none of those the lens info like the pentaxforums exif view does.

So does anyone know of an app that I can use on Windows that can show that info?

Thanks,
Jim

Hi,

I just got my K-S2 (used from Ebay) this past week, and I have a couple of questions about it:

1) Tav (aperture and shutter) mode: I can set the Auto ISO range and set the aperture and shutter speed (using the rear and front dials, respectively) which is cool, but is there a way to LOCK those settings once I have set them, to avoid changing one or both of them by mistake?

2) I noticed the firmware is V1.11 and there is a V1.20. Should I upgrade the firmware to V1.20? The reason for the question is I also have a K-x, and I have not upgraded that firmware because there was discussion that it was unknown whether upgrading the firmware would eliminate the possibility of going into debug mode for the K-x.

Thanks,
Jim

If you do ever try Flashair, make sure it is "Flashair III" and has "W-03" on the label on the card. I think the Keenai desktop app only works with the W-03 cards (and not with the W-02 cards), or so I was told. Also there is some help on the Eye-fi forums (yes, the Eye-fi forums, Toshiba is now apparently supporting Eye-fi cards, or something like that).

With the Flashair cards, they expose a web server at Pentax Forums - The Ultimate Resource for Everything Pentax, so you can get to the pics on the card as long as you are on the same WI-FI channel, I think. Then, if you use the Keenai desktop, they can also act like the old Eye-fi cards, which is the way I use them, i.e., when I turn on my camera in range of my PC, it automatically sends the new pics to the PC.

I think that sometimes, some blur is ok in action photos, so you maybe you could've lowered shutter to something less than 1/500 and gotten better light?
