In 2016 I joined a photo tour to Yellowstone in winter. The tour leaders were Nikon users, others were Canonites and I felt my Pentax gear was viewed as being one step up from the Box Brownie. One day we were to photograph waterfalls and the tour leader was promoting using multi-exposure/composites over slower shutter speeds to get that silky look. Looking at me he asked "can your camera do that?" Perhaps it was a legitimate question. He wasn't 'being funny', but he clearly didn't view my K5 as a serious camera.
This year I went on a tour to the Pantanal. Meeting the group on the first night the tour leader asked me what I shot with. I replied that I could guarantee no one else would be using the same as me. Without missing a beat he replied "Pentax". And, while I knew that I would be the only Pentax user, I wasn't quite prepared for the fact that I was the only DSLR user, the others having switched to mirror-less, some Nikons, a Sony and an Olympus. Again, my Pentax gear (K1 and K3iii) was viewed as somehow inferior and the butt of many unnecessary jokes. Even after I switched to electronic shutter as the click of the mechanical shutter was deafening to their ears.
The moral is that it seems that Pentax will only ever be viewed in a good light by those of us who are invested in it.
Frankly, I have never been "brand" driven, and I don't need to jump on the the latest and greatest technology bandwagon to be viewed as a serious hobbyist photographer. I'm comfortable with what I have and if that means I have to endure some lighthearted (and some not so lighthearted) ribbing, I can take it.
So, Is Pentax Doomed? With the move to mirror-less all SLR's may be going the way of the dinosaur. How long that might take is anyone's guess. In the meantime I will enjoy getting as much mileage as possible out of my Pentax system.
As a side note to the Yellowstone tour, the best ''snowy bison' picture of the trip was taken by a non-photographer spouse on her cell phone. She was sitting in the front passenger seat and was quick enough to get the shot of a bison in the snow at the side of the road before it took off!

Given current travel restrictions due to Covid, and not much hope of them being lifted any time soon, it's bitter-sweet looking through back catalog of places we have been & long to return. My contribution is probably self-explanatory: Frutillar, Chile with Osorno volcano in background. February 2019, K-5 w/Sigma 17-50 @ 21mm.

I'm a bit lazy and stack filters a lot more than I should. I've learned not to screw them in tight, but have had this happen on occasion. A filter wrench or rubber gloves should do the trick.
