I have had a great success (just one) by using bulb mode and a remote shutter release. As soon as the lightning flashed i would close the shutter. Unfortunately a hard drive failure meant i lost it and a few others. I didn't tell my wife who would harp about backing up..... lesson learned the hard way.

Reposted by request, and my apologies to the moderators.

Old bridge in Brownlow Hill NSW.i only had the width of the road plus about 2 meters between me and the bridge. Shot with a 50mm f1.4 @f11 on a Pentax K5iis mounted on a nodal slide. Focused the camera on the closest point then switched to manual focus. Metered several points in the shot for exposure, took a guess and met the body to manual exposure. Shot a series of 9 frames and stitched them together with Image Composite Editor. The resulting Tiff file was too big for my computer to edit so thank God settings were pretty good. Cropped and converted image to Jpeg with GIMP

Hi all, my tip is to remove your camera strap or secure it when using slower shutter speeds. As a rule of thumb, use a shutter speed at least double the focal length of the lens, quadruple if you are hand holding or if it is windy, etc. IE, 50mm lens means at least 1/100 sec or 1/200sec hand held. Next tip, keep an eye on EXIF data both while shooting (viewfinder or screen) and post production. Also, if you have left a remote release at home, use a 2 second timer to avoid shaking the camera when you push the shutter.
Happy snapping!

Harbour bridge from Luna Park. No tripod so used the jetty post on a 2 second timer.

Hi guys, my name is Rob.

Been shooting mainly as an amateur for around 23 years. Always used Pentax gear but first time on here. My favorite work is long exposures and working with natural light. I shoot using a K5iis, K5 and eagerly awaiting the arrival of a 645D. Also shoot a bit of film with a 645N and 6X7 Also enjoy macro work with extension tubes or bellows but time is the limiting factor.

Have a look at my flikr account www.flikr.com/photos/rdlamontphotography

All the best and looking forward to some interesting discussions

Rob
