Cheap Strobe kit for 645z

Thank you for your replies!

With the work I do - it tends to be natural light editorial and the advertising/commercial commissions tend to have budgets for hiring gear.
I used to have the ProFoto D1 500 Air kit and I felt like I never used it to its fullest capacity.

I just want to find a solid light kit for around $500 or less that I can pull out if needed. Knowing full well that they will have serious drawbacks compared to ProFoto/Broncolor etc and HSS won't be available.
I have a couple of shoots next week that require full-body/clean white background...for example. Something I never do.

Brooke - I agree that with the 645z there is so much room in the DR - you can get away with shooting at higher ISO's when using weak light.

Thanks again - I'll keep searching.

Hi there,

I know theres many discussions about 645z / HSS etc - but I'm still a bit confused.

Most of my work is natural light - but I need to buy a cheap strobe kit for some specific jobs I have coming up.

I was wondering if this would work with the 645z
https://www.amazon.com/Softbox-Lighting-Carrying-Portrait-Photography/dp/B01...ntaxforums-20&

I used to own ProFoto with my Canon setup but I don't need that kind of power. I don't mind shooting via PC either.

Do let me know any basic strobe suggestions you may have

Thank you

645z Video Quality - question!!

Hi All,

So...I actually sorted out the issues I was having with the 645z video.
This certainly doesn't make it a viable tool for video like we've all known since its release - but the final product ain't half bad.
So just in case somebody comes across the same problems I had....heres the solution!

Good old Philip Bloom to the rescue - Quick Trick for De-Flickering Your Video Shots - The Beat: A Blog by PremiumBeat
This worked an absolute charm for the issues I was having. I'm not quite technically able enough to determine why...but duplicating the clip in the timeline, layering over the original and offsetting by one frame, then adding 50% opacity to the top layer - means the image isn't 'shaking' anymore and the 60fps is slowing down very nicely.
Also - adding 1.00 anti-flicker to each frame in the timeline is actually reducing some of the moire too.

Anyway - I'll be sticking to my Canon 5D for video and hopefully buying the Black Magic Ursa Mini sometime soon...but its nice to know that if you capture some sort of video on the 645z...you can output it at a quality thats not totally laughable!

Thanks for the input

Hmmm thats interesting - I considered it being similar to interlacing. I will try deinterlacing a clip now and see if that makes a difference. Maybe downsizing to 720p...
Failing that I'll do a test at HD instead of full HD...

I mean...it really shouldn't allow you to shoot footage with settings it can't handle..!

Okay here is a quick clip - https://vid.me/fM4X

I have slowed down in Premiere and exported without changes - I assure you the quality of the raw .mov files are exactly the same.

The first shot is slightly overexposed but the loss of detail on the power lines and the edges of those trees is terrible.
The second shot is exposed correctly - but it just can't deal with the hair detail.
If you fullscreen you'll see its almost shaking - like the noise is moving..! It was shot at 400 iso...

I just feel like it can't be this awful - there must be a way I can conform the raw footage or something. Its the 'shake' that bothers me most. The camera was entirely still - its in every shot.

And yes - before you ask that is my friend's Elvis obsessed 13 year old son with his three-legged dog...of course!

Luckily I tested it before with the SR as I read about that. Switched it off immediately! Truly awful.

I shot entirely on a tripod for fear of shake with SR switched off.
I can try and post some footage now...

Thank you

645z Video Quality - question!!

Hi there,

I own a 645z - of course its the best camera I've ever used!
I'm not planning on using it for video - believe me I did my research before and realised this was its one flaw.

However - I did a test shoot for a friend's music video and the quality is truly awful. Almost unusable - I'm considering adding a filter over it to make it look like VHS!

I just wanted to ask - am I missing a trick here? Do I need to conform to some different format? It can't be this bad.

I shot at 60fps, Full HD in order to slow it down in post - the image looks like its shaking constantly, the moire is awful.
I've put it through Premiere Pro etc etc...I can't get it to look half decent.

Please help! Theres nothing online really...

Thank you
