Okay the shutter works now that I replaced the battery but even when I turn off the camera it's still running, probably why the batteries died without me using it. I loaded film in and when I went to change the settings I noticed the shutter was going off. When I looked it said my roll of film was used up but I never hit the shutter. Is that another problem the ZX-50 has?

Hello, hopefully someone can help me;
I'm a photography major and a film SLR camera was required for a Black and White Photography class. My father had given me his Pentax ZX-50 that looked to be in perfect condition from what my professor had seen. When I had bought batteries for the camera for some reason it had read that they were dying (probably because of the cold) but the shutter wouldn't go off, nor would the flash. The camera turns on and we can change the shutter speeds and aperture but the camera won't take a photograph. Would that have anything to do with the batteries being almost dead, or would the camera still go off even if they were?
Thanks! :)
