Chief Mountain in sw Alberta. Picture from May of 2021, taken with my then new 300 mm Pentax lens on My K3 II. An iconic prairie scene from sw Alberta. Long lenses (no surprise !) are ideal for our prairie landscapes. I like soft lighting, soft shadows. I merged two files here in PS to get the grasses in the foreground sharper. This scene is part of my collections of "Landscapes Interrupted". ~gwd

Here is a delightful red cala lily we purchased from a local greenhouse (Lethbridge, Alberta) CANADA. I LOVE to shoot flowers. I like to see something different, especially in the lighting. I tend to go with dramatic lighting in my pictures of flowers; whether it be backlighting with soft shadows, or in this case harsher side lighting. Backgrounds are as important as the subject; I like to present a clean light, or in this case deep dark background with few details, to draw the viewer straight in to the heart of the pictures. I find this to be a very versatile lens; it's got a nice sweet spot for me at f7.1. The joys of seeing, and sharing. 😃 "Every day is filled with new things just waiting to be discovered" ~gwd.

No, it was Saw-whet! (that's my side of humour!) It was a lovely quiet morning in our back yard. I saw this owl, more specifically a Northern Saw-whet Owl,flying a bit out of its natural habitat range. It was mid September, and this li'l fella drops by to visit; perched very nicely, so as to give me advantage of the fill light too!; the sunlight reflected off our bedroom window. That's what added the pop highlights to both eyes; and as the light filtered through the sumac branches, it just happened to add a bit more light to the face. I knew I'd have to try and grab a shot. My Pentax was right here; but my brand new 300mm Pentax lens was upstairs. Do I dare try to run for it? NO. Good thing I didn't; I caught this and 2 other shots, before a group of magpies came by squawking, and the little fellow flew off. I had up my ISO to 800 to get a reasonable shutter speed due to the max aperture on this lens, and I cropped it in a fair bit you'll see in the EXIF... wished I'd had my 300 handy! But to see it was a delight! This li'l bird is a first for me; to add a "lifer" to my birdwatching life-list.Oh yes. This owl is a tiny one; barely the size of an American Robin; merely 6-7" tall. Oh, the joys of seeing, and sharing. "Every day is filled with new things just waiting to be discovered" ~gwd.

Lovely tones, a great sense of depth emphasized by haze and colour palette range from foreground to distant peaks, strong textural quality. Diagonals in composition provide a wonderful series of steps that weave you into the image. Well done! ~gwd

quite true; appreciate the feedback; (I am all for critiques). I've now added the "Befores" to encourage more feedback. Was my effort worth the time? Perhaps a different way to highlight the vehicles? just tone down the reds? It was FUN!

Here's a Panorama stitched in Lightroom. Challenging lighting as the winter sun was about ready to slide behind those mountains.

I shoot concerts regularly at the Enmax Centre here. Lighting is all over the place, so different from one performance to another, and of course with levels up 'n down, and coloured in so many ways for different songs. This concert with Brett Kissel and Lauren Mayell was one of the best, for my taste in lighting that is. I tend to expose for darker tones, particularly for concerts. This time, I wanted to take the tones deeper, so on the Brett Kissel image, I used the HDR EFX from the Nik Collection (avail now, N/c from Google) and increased the blues, and allowed the background to pick up some of those tones. This created some interesting textures, and accented the backlighting in an interesting way. It give it a painterly look; it reminds me of cover artwork found an old Western adventure novella covers) Pentax 18-135 WR used on the image of Lauren, and a Tamron 75-300 for Brett (although Lightroom calls it a Sigma!) Is there a way to set up Adobe Lightroom v 6 so that when I add image files to a catalogue, I can have the Lens corrections made automatically? As I do it now, I have to do it individually, or click "previous, and that will copy all image edits form previously edited file. How would you set up a "preset" for importing this way? or can you?

No longer a quiet little fishingvillage, or seaport city, this is a hoppin' tourist centre. Colourful, inviting, with traffic movin' every which way. It's not congested, but always something poppin' in, out or by. There's lots to look at, fun little things happening at the edges of the frame; normally I'd edit out. .. but hey! it captures a moment here, and a feeling... and my favourite kind of light! ~gwd

A fantastic day here, our first visit to the Coutts Centre, east of Nanton, Alberta; that kind of day where you've got a slight haze overcast, yet large expanse of blue skies; and I love to shoot flowers with backlighting. Textures on rusting iron fences, and layers of greens, and shadows in the backgrounds; This is a most beautifully designed garden space. I couldn't ask for more! F/7.1 a sweet spot for this lens. With this kind of lighting, little needs to be done to the image files. Maybe a vignette, or some might add a bit of sharpnsss or clarity in Lightroom; this were straight out of the camera. Love to do that when I can. Big smiles here.

Is there a way to ensure aperture will remain locked on a specific f/stop? I shoot in Manual a lot with controlled lighting scenes, but often while waiting or walking to my next site in the garden for instance, with camera in hand, I find the aperture wheel has been knocked by my thumb. Can you lock it using a USER mode? I know that selection wheel will lock; I want the aperture, ad shutter wheels to lock, when I want them to.

Street Wheelers Street Machine Weekend Cruise Night is a Hot one, in many respects. Wonderful vehicles to be seen in this controlled cruise night... but you can get some pretty colourful and busy, distracting backgrounds to deal with. Not to mention the mix of bright setting sun light and shade. This year I elected to soften some of those competing backgrounds in Adobe Photoshop Elements. Selecting areas to convert to B&W; removing colour from a Red Firehall , or Yellow/orange Safety Vests, pylons, ... and having some fun leaving full colour in for some people on the edge.. so to speak!;-) I then brought the image back into Lightroom and softened detail and unsharp filter in some more offensive regions. Some worked better than others. I've now added the "Befores" to encourage more feedback from members (I am all for critiques). Was my effort worth the time? It was FUN!

Why are the available filters different if you choose to apply a filter to the original image shot, as opposed to filters that are available after the image is captured? I find the menu to get into those filters tedious, time-consuming... especially shooting at the magic hour or sunsets. I like the results from a couple of Efx with the pre-shoot; but then I have to mess around to capture it clean then go through the menus to get it again with that filter now to capture the same scene with the filter effect; those sunsets don't last very long.

What would you recommend as the most useful settings to incorporate into those dial modes U1, U2, U3. I've never gotten around to trying them out. I shoot mostly outdoors; I like to capture interesting design elements I see into street scenes, landscapes. I also shoot a lot of backyard garden flowers and pollinators (up-close n personal). Would you recommend setting U1 for full sun; U2 for shade? What other parameters would you recommend ?

are there any plans for Ricoh Pentax to bring out an old-fashioned articulating rear screen for the Pentax K-1 ? or better yet, a reboot on the K3ii. ... not a screen like that one with "rods" on the K1, but one that will twist 180 degrees to present a plain back, or full screen ; and 90 degree, in 2 axis, for my low angle shots horizontal , and for over my head portrait format shots for shooting over taller crowds... which I run into a lot. !;-)
