Camera Freeze

Taking photo's at a picnic last weekend and my K20 froze. Would not respond to anything I did including turning it off. So I took out the batteries and reinserted them and the camera was ok. It was pretty hot out,but cant imagine that would have anything to do with it. Also in the lower left hand corner of the of the LCD panel it said 'slow' when it froze up.

Focusing problem

I havent had this problem before so dont know if this has to do with my new lens (Pentax 55-300), the K20, me, or any or all of these combo's.

I was taking photo's of some birds sitting in the branches that stick out from the side of a mountain. When I was reviewing them in the monitor(and magnifying them) the birds were blurry but the leaves surrounding them were clear, despite the fact the leaves were right next to the birds. This has happened to me several times The birds, obviously are my main focus.
When looking thru the viewfinder the AF points were all lighting red on the bird(s) and the leaves so why would the birds be out of focus when magnified and not the leaves?

When using my kit lens I never had this happen. Granted the K20(have only had a few months) is a BIG learning curve for me and the lens I've only had about 4 weeks so I'm betting it's something I'm doing wrong.

Seculine Action Level

Actually the Ross Hinged Camera level I asked about in my original post (#2) is a bubble level that fits in the hotshoe. It goes for about $40. The reason I thought maybe the first level (Seculine) might be better is because in a discussion of this problem someone brought up the fact that sometime the camera itself may be slightly off and therefore if you used one of these devices you would need to be able to adust the degree of slant. The Seculine sells for just under $50 I believe.

Pentax Problems ?

In my search for a good deal on a Pentax lens, I called Cameta Camera for the second time in a week. Last week they told me they did not have the Pentax 55-300mm in stock and to call back. When I did so today, one of the salesman told me he 'had bad news', they would not be getting any more Pentax lenses in stock nor any other Pentax products as there was some kind of dispute between Pentax and Cameta.
As I ordered my K20d from this company and was pleased with their price and service I was pretty disappointed. Cameta is (or was) an authorized dealer for Pentax and was wondering if anyone had herd if Pentax was having some kind of sales problems or maybe this is just some gripe with Cameta.

Harder to find Pentax 55-300 ?

I've been pricing the Pentax 55-300 lens. I thought I heard it was suppose to come down to $299. Not only can I not find it for that price but it seems that's it's getting harder to find this lens right now.
I've gone to all the usual suspects on line and places are either low on stock or dont even list this lens even thought they seemed to be abundant a short time back.
Anybody else finding this? The places I can find it at the price is alot higher than what I had seen a short time ago too. What's going on.( Or is it just me).

Seculine Action Level

I'm so tired of ending up with pictures that are on a slant. I know this topic has been addressed before. In Shutterbug magazine I saw two ads that dealt with this problem and was wondering if anyone had used either of these two products.

1. Seculine Action Level (interfitphotographic.com). I was wondering,if this is actually a good product, if it might work better than 2. (below) as it states on their site that "sensitivity can be adjusted for slant degree".

2. Ross Hinged Camera Level (cameralevel.com). This one is much more simplistic(but sometimes that can mean better). What makes me think the first one may be better is because of being able to adjust for slant degree.

Any thoughts or comments on these two products. Thanks. Kim

Photo paper

Thanks for all your input. Actually, I have sold some of my prints and to me they look pretty good. I just wanted to start raising the bar to make bigger and better prints. While I consider myself to have a good eye for my photographic content, my skills at the technological side of things are to say the least a big learning experience but one I'm more than willing to learn as I love this medium so much.

I'm very happy to have found this site. I know my questions are 'the newbiest', but that's how ya learn. Looks like alot of experimenting is in order. I was trying to get a handle on the whole paper/ink thing as it is all so expensive, but I enjoy having the control of printing my own work and like most, money is always a consideration.

"Upside down" lens

Thanks for clearing that up, was hoping for that answer :D. As far as why I had the camera sent in for repair... should be no surprise when you hear the answer after what I just asked. In trying to get some very troublesome dust off the camera's insides I scratched part of it and sent it in for a fix. I must say that I was impressed with Pentax in that even though this was my fault they fixed it for nothing(a one time deal on that, am now EXTRA careful, lol). (When they sent the camera back however they sent me one with a different serial number so did have to deal with that, but still they were quite up front about fixing the problem, so I still give them cudos.) The focusing ring on the lens was loose the other time I sent it in(hence the original question). So nothing that was a huge deal. They did a great job cleaning it up really good too. None of this cost me a thing either. I live in the mountains of sw NM so I have to deal with lots of dirt/dust issues.

"Upside down" lens

This question is embarrassing to ask(maybe I should have put it in the beginners section) but need an answer, so please be kind. First DSLR I bought was the K100D w/kit lens. A few months ago I purchased the K20D body only with the intention of using the lens from the K100D until I could afford to purchase another lens. Both the K100 and it's lens have been sent a couple of times to Pentax for repair. I didnt notice until I took the lens off the K100 and put it on the K20 that the wording around the front of the lens(SMC PENTAX-DA 1:3.5-5.6 18-55mm AL) is at the bottom of the lens(thus being "upside down" to read) and the 52mm is at the top and upside down. This lens was not like this when I bought the K100(it now fits like this on both camera's) so I have to assume that on one of these repairs this happened and I didnt notice it :o. Does this affect the pictures taken in any way(doesnt look like it but if I missed this in the first place....).

I admit that the K20D is Way beyond me at this point and have not been as happy with the pictures as much as the K100 only because I dont know what I'm doing half the time, so I have Much to learn. Thanks.

Does it really make that big of a difference if you dont use the same brand photo paper as the printer your using? Now that I'm using an Epson printer(Stylus 1400) I have noticed that there isnt as big of a selection in my shopping area of Epson paper as there is HP(ie at Staples). Not sure why this is as they sell just as many Epson printers as HP. I have never printed on anything but an HP that has a memory card slot(trying to expand my horizons ) before so I'm a newbie at printing any other way.
Also, now that I can make larger prints I was wondering what any of you use as far as fine art paper. I see that for larger prints Staples has alot of their own brand of photo paper(I know this is not fine art paper, just another thought) and was wondering if it's any good at all. Thanks for any help.

Pictbridge

I recently bought an Epson Stylus 1400. While reading one of the reviews about printing on the 1400 a reviewer mentioned that he would never be "brave enough" to print directly from his dslr to the printer. Why would this be? He kind of eluded to the fact that it would take alot more ink(I dont know why but this is how it sounded to me). I tried a couple of prints using pictbridge(am shooting with a K20D) and they looked pretty good to me. But now this has me wondering if I am using a boat load more ink than I have to. With the price of the Claria ink, I sure dont want to be doing that. I dont intend on printing this way all the time, but was hoping someone could shed some light on this. Thanks.

Photo printer

Right now I am using an HP photosmart printer(D7360) which I like alot and has provided me with some very nice pictures(it uses Vivera inks which I love). I'm looking to buy a new printer as this one is at about the end of it's life(it was not a real expensive printer) and would like to print bigger pictures(this one goes up to 8.5 x 11).
I would like to stick with HP because of the great ink at affordable prices. Plus I would like to stick with a stand alone as it's not always possible for me to use my computer. Anyone have any thoughts? I notice once you start getting into the stand alone printers it seems choices and quality go down especially if you want to print larger photo's. I love using a big touch screen to do some editing of my pictures. Thanks for any help.

Best Lens for wildlife/landscape

I live in the mountains of NM, where it seems most every bit of land no matter how remote has a fence around it so the majority of my shots have to be taken from quite a distance. I also take quite a few wildlife shots of some pretty fast subjects. Could someone suggest the best lens for my situation. I know I'll have to compromise some as I can only afford one new lens at this time. I will be putting this on a K20D(I also have a K100d). The only lens I own now is the kit lens that came with the K100(DA 18-55). Thanks.

K20D deleting pictures

Ok, I figured out what I was doing wrong and can now take the card out and put back in without deleting. But do have another question. The reason I take the card out in the first place is because I have an HP printer that can be used as a stand alone printer and like to put the SD cards in to make changes and print. If I take the card from the K20 and put it in the printer and then put back in the camera, I'm assuming that it will not reformat the card again so as to mess anything up.

I have a K100D and recently bought the K20D. When I use the K100D I can take out the SD card and insert it again in the camera without it deleting the pictures I have taken. However on the K20D I have not found this possible to do. Is there a way for me to do this?

K20D new price drop

Yes,I get that. Was just reporting verbatim what other sellers listed"in the box" as compared to Cameta(other sellers, including Pentax website are the one's that found it necessary to list that). And still does not explain the other exclusions. Was just curious as I have heard very good things about Cameta and was going to buy from them and didnt want to miss out on anything I should be receiving with the purchase.

K20D new price drop

I've been doing some price checking and have heard Cameta Camera is good. However when I checked what is 'in the box' with a new K20D body with them as compared to pentax store and some other sellers, Cameta is missing AC plug, bottom cap and focusing screen. Focusing screen alone sells for @ $57.00 at pentax.
