Here's the final Tiff file, it looks a little better in terms of sharpness, but I had SR off by accident(I was using a tripod right before I saw the bird) and manual focus on a Pentax Super-Takumar 135mm. It gives him that soft feathery look anyway

RAW definitely, how well does the card transfer, speeds and such. I've heard the new Mobi Pro doesn't have a continuous delete like the X2 does but I don't know if that's true.

My problem is I can't figure out how DSS works lol, maybe I'm just dumb but I'm following a few youtube videos and I never get anything. I also probably need to take more than 50 photos to make a better image idk

Since the K-50 has no tethering abilities currently(my sadness was truly great when I found this out), I've been looking for other options of getting my photos to my tablet for processing without having to turn the camera off, take the SD card out, insert into dedicated reader attached to tablet, download, eject card, re-insert in camera, turn it back on.

The only one I've seen so far is the Mobi Pro Eye-Fi card series that is supposed to create a dedicated network and directly send the photos straight to the tablet. I've read a few of the reviews on the card and they seem to be rather up and down based on a few qualities and some nit-picking so I'm hoping there's a few of you who have experience with this card and can offer some input before I drop $100 on it haha.

What exactly would the results be if I reversed the Vivitar for astronomy like the moon? Just the Vivitar and nothing else so there shouldn't be a light loss problem while still increasing magnification?

I have aperture rings on 2 out of my 3 lenses so it's not a problem no lol.

Um... I explained in the OP that although I love Lightroom, I really need a "solid program where I can layer the photos in RAW" for astrophotography, layering them in TIFF or JPEG lowers the quality, especially since I live in a light polluted town. I'd rather not risk losing ANY detail because astrophotography is something that's interested me for a long time and I plan on taking the best photos I possibly can with it. Since apparently the only program that actually offers good support for it and thorough tutorials is Photoshop, I'm most likely going to get the photography subscription.

I did, however either I'm doing something wrong or taking the wrong pictures but it always gives me a not enough photos to merge error. Googling the problem points to several Adobe forum posts describing it as a bug that appeared in a recent update that still hasn't been fixed

It's not, and for good reasons. There's no way they could check and see if I've made digital copies of the software so giving me a refund would be based on an "honor" system and there aren't too many companies that do that anymore. I'm not too bugged about it because LR IS a great program, I'm just annoyed at the marketing of having something as integral to photography as layers not being included in a photography development program. It is what it is though. I guess I'll be digging out the old college books and re-learning photoshop, though I might have to buy some new ones. Oh well, such is life.

Unfortunately It's a download from Amazon so it's nonrefundable, I'll probably just give them the $10 per month since I have the disposable income anyway and $10 isn't going to hurt me any.

You are correct, I could've known that it didn't have layers when I bought it, my mistake and I admit it. But that doesn't mean that I'm wrong, for $142 I should be able to at least have the ability to layer photos on each other even if the feature was really fiddly and difficult to use I would rather at least have it so I could learn how to use it in one program along with all the other wonderful features of LR rather than having to go find another program and learn how to adequately use that one too. Honestly I'll probably end up going to Photoshop Elements just for the convenience, I'm already using LR and programs created by the same company are usually streamlined to work with each other.

---------- Post added 02-25-16 at 06:43 AM ----------

I usually shoot in RAW+ however seeing as I never use the additional jpegs I'll probably drop that down to RAW to save space, not that my 128 gig is hurting for it :P. Is it only Photoshop ELEMENTS that suffers from the 8 bit degradation or does the full program offer 16 bit? Also what editing features specifically? The only thing I would really be using it for until I completely figure out LR is the layers function and maybe a few others if I can find my old photoshop textbooks from high school.

I am already enjoying the wonders of LR 6, specifically the part where I paid $142 for a program that doesn't even allow me to layer photos on each other(The regret is real). But despite that I'm having a lot of fun learning LR and since I'm stuck with it I do need another program specifically for layering astrophotography photos to get those star trails/long night shots that I've always wanted.

So now I'm looking between Photoshop Elements, Corel PaintShop Pro X8, and random freeware that I know I'm not going to get. I would prefer a solid program where I can layer the photos in RAW and then port them back into LR for a final adjustment but I don't know enough about either of the latest versions to choose and 3 hours of googling hasn't helped.

Macro Completely Crazy Macro/Micro Idea?

So I just received my Vivitar 85-205mm lens in the mail along with my 55mm Super Takumar and I currently have reverse rings, close up filters, and extension tubes on the way so with all that macro equipment I need a setup specifically for macro and extreme micro pictures.

So far I've imagined a pretty extreme setup using all three of my lenses involving the Vivitar as the main lens with my 18-55mm kit lens reversed onto that with the two extension tubes connecting the 18-55mm to my 55mm Super and a 10+ filter attached to the 55mm. I'll probably need another tripod to strap everything down and keep it stable too.

That'll look super awkward I already know but I have no idea if that'll even work in the first place due to the amount of light eliminated, possible vignetting, and anything else that my noob self probably doesn't even know about yet. I imagine I'll need one of those LED rings attached to the end of the 55mm to even have a chance at seeing anything but what do you guys think?

How difficult in terms of getting the case off, resilience of the motherboard to accidental static electricity/damage, removing the filter, etc was it to mod your camera? Were there any tutorials/videos that you watched that really helped you to understand everything about replacing the filter, cooling the sensor, etc? I'm pretty confident I could open a used camera up and do it myself but I'm curious what your experience was with it. I noticed you said your camera is DIY, so you completely built a new camera/case using parts from the Canon?

Also I've heard good things about the astronomik filters, but do they only fit Canons or can they clip in to pentax cameras also? I am definitely interested in astro, like I said I bought the K50 specifically for it in the first place.

I imagine for right now I'll probably end up just getting the GPS unit and playing with that for a while and save up for a modded camera in the meantime.

Would a telescope help at all with nebulae? Attaching a filter or some such to bring out the right wavelengths?

Astrophotography on a K50?

Hello so in an ironic twist, I bought the K50 for astrophotography in the first place largely because of the massive ISO setting (IK, IK, I've already figured out that was a stupid thing to base a first DSLR purchase on.) and now seeing as how it's actually supposed to be somewhat bad at low light I'm kind of stuck. On the one hand, I love this little beast, it's an amazing camera that I'm having a ton of fun with and I definitely won't sell/trade this till it's dead. HOWEVER, I did buy it for the purpose of astro and now I actually want to use it for that despite the low light problems.

I've searched barn door trackers, the GPS unit that fits in the hotshoe and read more than a few articles but I'm still somewhat conflicted on what to get. Should I just build a barn door tracker, skip the GPS unit, and go from there? If I get the GPS unit, how well will it work? I'm looking to eventually image nebulae and the like, deep sky objects, so should I go ahead and chip in a telescope too? What good telescopes have a few of you used? Or should I go a completely different route, skip using the K50 for astrophotography, buy a cheap canon and send it off to get the IR filter modified and run from there?

As you can see I have no idea what I'm doing so any help is seriously appreciated.

Honestly as long as you have a good graphics card and CPU, 8 gigs is perfectly acceptable. Right now I'm running LR and it idles at around a 1 gig while the cpu and disk speed stay at 1% and 10% respectively. However when I modify images/import/export my cpu jumps to about 70-80% for 2-5 seconds and my disk speed jumps to about 50%. So all you really need is an i7 core or similar and an SSD. Obviously there's a little more to it than that but that's basic.

---------- Post added 02-21-16 at 02:02 AM ----------

I definitely plan to squeeze my K50 to death. I love this little beast, however as some posters have already mentioned and I've noticed myself the AF is really slow. I've also had problems with the exposure, shutter, and iso settings locking after a photo for a few seconds. However I do believe I made the right choice for my first DSLR and I will definitely keep it till it dies, but the K-3 and higher cameras look shiny so they just call my money out of my wallet and I don't even notice with my star struck eyes XD. Seriously though the fact that every single lens ever made for Pentax cameras are compatible with my camera is awesome and I'm super excited to test out some of the older lenses.

I have 8 gigs in my laptop with built in graphics chip set, the monitor is cracked from when I fell asleep and dropped it(Not the first time or the last :P) so I'm currently running a HDMI into my 32" Vizio. So far I can run LR 6 pretty easily, it doesn't eat up a whole lot of memory but Exports/Imports are somewhat slow. I'm currently saving up for a new desktop that I've spent several months refining and will probably refine even more before it's done but you can build a decent photography oriented desktop for about $300-$500. Just make sure to get a decent GPU if you're running LR since version 6 can drop some of the CPU load onto the GPU and it'll speed LR up relatively quickly. 16 gigs is enough to run most graphics intensive games on high to ultra settings with a decent GPU so LR shouldn't draw more than 10-12 at a time on peak loads.

Ugh I've just got into Photography with a DSLR and just from spending the last 2 weeks reading through articles, playing with my K50 and the images in LR, that K1 looks gorgeous. The extra e-dial made me look at my K50 sadly, I definitely love the e-dials on the k50, but an extra one would definitely help. The built in GPS, Wi-Fi, and supported tethering basically make that camera my birthday present next year once the price drops, I've gained more experience, they've worked out any bugs in the firmware, and maybe they'll replace the 2.0 USB with 3.0. Only real downside to me but like I said I'm a newbie :P.
