When I described my workflow, it was a generic example. Sometimes the highlights are fine, but sometimes they cannot be recovered.
Dynamic range of the scene rarely exceeds sensor's, I just tend to push the histogram right as much as possible while trying not to clip the highlights and not to look at the screen.
So if I enable highlight recovery in camera and it underexposes all my shots by one stop it defies the original purpose of exposing to the right.

Hi! Yes, correct, I'm trying to get precise exposure without the display, having only viewfinder.
I use CaptureOne. I recover highlights by dragging exposure left until there's no clipping and then use curves to add contrast to shadows or highlights.
I believe that RGB(255, 255, 255) should represent the maximum value of the original color space, no matter how deep. ---------- Post added 09-20-18 at 03:07 PM ----------
Oh, I did not expect that, thanks for info!

Thank you for the response, but I'm afraid that amount of scrolling I'll need to do on the exposure compensation wheel will depend on how much sky there's in a frame, that adds some cognitive load to an already brain-heavy task! But I will try mapping EC to one of the wheels, sounds interesting!
Previously I was shooting only in M with the green button, but I have gone full P because I've f***** up too many shots =)
Thank you very much, this is indeed a simple solution, will definitely try it!
Thank you, will try to play around with EC only, instead of EC + spot metering + AE-L
After short googling I can see that highlight correction is just a metadata that is saved along with the RAW and is utilized in the raw converter later a-la curves, it does not modify the RAW data which might be blown out. Correct me if I'm wrong please.
Correct, I'm talking about RGB 255, 255, 255 in some patches of a sky in a raw file.
There's a trick I use to get correct exposure - I've mapped "digital preview" to the preview dial, that shows me the histogram right away. Cumbersome because I don't like looking at the screen, a matter of last resort. /me Looks at mirrorless offerings with histogram in viewfinder...
+1, we lose the whole bit of information per pixel should an image be underexposed by one stop, that one bit is not critical in highlights, but might be a changer in shadows. ---------- Post added 09-19-18 at 05:52 AM ---------- Thank you all for your suggestions, I'll try a couple of things pointed out to me and will be back with results!

Hi folks!
I'm doing a lot of street fotography, and usually work with the P mode. Both K-1 and K-3 do exposure pretty well, without blown highlights because the whole DR of a street easily fits into their DR.
However, I'm really struggling with my cameras when a piece of sky comes into the composition - it's almost always overexposed if there's a small patch of it or under-exposed if it's a major element in composition.
So whenever there's a sky in a shot, my steps are as following:- set metering mode to spot
- set exposure compensation to +2
- point center of a camera to a sky
- press the AE-L button to lock the exposure
- recompose
- focus & shoot
This workflow has two downsides:- cumbersome
- if I want to review a taken shot - pressing the Playback button re-sets the locked exposure and I have to remember to meter the sky again and lock it
- if my next shot is just a street, I have to reset metering mode and exposure compensation
The second downside is really painful.
So I want to ask you experienced guys on how to improve this workflow?

I've been shooting landscapes with DA*200 on K-3 for years, and when I switched to K-1 it blew my mind.
I don't use it anymore because the AF broke (!!!) and I find the newly-bought DA 60-250 is much more versatile.
The DA*200 on FF produces gorgeous picture across the frame, no doubt, but you need to print larger than 13x19 to distinguish it from cheaper lens. 200mm first try on FF - PentaxForums.com |

Warm sunshine in the northern europe, a shot that took six moths to catch.
During my long work on this scene I've learned a lot. Hundreds of sketched raws, full spectrum of weather and light conditions - all contributed to the refined version.
Most importantly, challenging this sometimes boring and minimalistic landscape was fun.

Hey dude
This picture is beautiful, I like how it depicts the water movement.
To have a lighter picture google for "photo exposure"

Please be sure to buy a NAS solution, not just an external drive if you want your files to persist for a long period.
I'm not willing to be their customer anymore

Hey guys, since we're the most responsive community, I'm asking this question here =)
Recently I've tried Amazon's Cloud Drive for online backup of my RAW photos, and this did not end well - yes, the storage is unlimited, but uploading 60Gb of raw photos after each shoot takes days.
On top of that today they cancel the unlimited plan and now want to auto renew my plan to 60$ per year for 100Gb. [1]
I'm fed up and really want to cancel my subscription and delete all the data, but haven't found the nuke button.
Can you help me, please?
P.S. since it's a photography forum, a photo of a bamboozled man attached. Shot in a hostel @ Hamburg

Hi All!
I've decided to change my RAW converter from RawTherapee to Capture One. So far it's gorgeous in all aspects, but I can't find the LAB curves.
Are they present at all in the default installation?
Thanks!

Hi guys!
The 200mm DA* is one of my favourite and mostly used lens. How does the new D FA* IQ compare to it?
I've read lots of reviews of the new lens and it looks like everyone is praising it's IQ from f2.8 and up, so I'm quite intrigued.
Thanks!

Love the colors of the first shot.
It really looks like you used a polarizing filter, but you've mentioned in your post that you don't have any filters for 24-70 so I'm bit puzzled =)

I love it when people go beyond easy things and come up with ideas like this.
Unfortunately I was too late and missed the performance of six pianos, but the remains could speak for themselves.

200mm is my favourite focal length, I like it's ability to precisely control the background.
Used on APS-C, it almost always felt a bit too tight, bit too croppy.
So with some anticipation I took the FF to it's first photoshoot, and, I have to say, this new angle is pretty damn alright.
