An comparison image without any ibis and ilis would have been nice to visualize what it exactly is that the ibis is doing in the photos.

KP ISSUES! (The camera is 2 years old)

I am wondering what exactly the purpose of this thread is.

It seems that OP knows/has decided that the camera has to be serviced and all suggestions seem to be useless therefore.

As an Icelander this is something that I find to be funny. We joke that we get four types of in a day but all of those weathers are mild.

The weather in Iceland is typically mild. Not too hot, not too cold. Not too much sun and not too much rain. Maybe a little bit too windy but not a storm. That is on a typical day.

There are of course storms that happen, those will be known many days in advance. Most of these occur in September to April. Summer weather is rather predictable.

These are not random events that happen out of the blue. Mild sprays maybe. Heavy rainstorms no.

Just check the Iceland Met office website while you are here Home-page - Icelandic Meteorological Office | Icelandic Meteorological office.

I am sure there is a Faroese equivalent.

Astrotracer works in "Bulb" only?

I am just thinking that over the timespan of 30 x 30 second (15 minutes) that the "object" has moved way past the range of the sensor shifting range.

Meaning that every 5 minutes or so he will need to adjust the tripod head.

If stacking is what he wants a barndoor tracker or equatorial mount might be a better solution.

A lot of assumption here of course. Main one being that OP is a he :)

Quick poll about tripods

I happen to have tripods with both types and I really can't say that I like one more than the other.

I could imagine that if I had arthritis in my finger joints that the twist locks/knobs would be better than the flip locks. Although I that issue can be solved by cleaning and lubing.

Some like to claim that the twist locks are quicker and I can't really disagree. However the time save is so minimal that I really don't care.

Lastly there is the claim that you can always see whether your legs are locked with flip locks. Yes that is true but the locking of the legs after extension is so automatic to me that I can't say that this is a huge issue.

I assume you only have the K-70 and 55-300 lens. Is that correct?

Could you try another K-mount lens?

I would not bother with upgrading from K-5IIs to K-3 I or II.

K-3 III is out of the question if your budget is around 1000 USD.

That leaves K-70 or KP. I think most would suggest the KP over K-70. Although the KP price is somewhat higher currently than it has been previously.
These two use a different battery (D-Li109) than K-5/3/1 (D-Li90).

Or you could go full frame with K-1. The cheapest are coming down to 900 USD +/- shipping (on ebay at least).

Your current lenses may not be ideal for full-frame so that would bring a further investment.

How To: Convert SDM to ScrewDrive + Video

Following is figure aiming to show the repetition in the LENSEEP file for the 60-250.

It is clear that the first 3 entries 28-DE-58 must be the identification code of the 60-250.
For the 50-135 the entries are 28-D6-50
For the 16-50 the entries are 28-D6-18. This is the same for the 17-70 lens for some reason. I got the 17-70 file from the dropbox collection. Possibly it is not a 17-70 lens file.

What all the files seem to have in common is the arrangement of entries around the C0 entries in the third column.
For the 60-250 these are E3-C0 // E3-2B
For the 50-135 these are F1-C0 // F1-29
For the 16-50 these are F2-C0 // F2-2D

For the sixteenth column (F) the entries are all FB (or 0). This is only true for 60-250 and oddly enough, 55-300.
This is not the case for other lenses.

For the 50-135 the entries are 1B/7B/FB

For the 16-50 the entries are 03/23/63/E3

There is always repetition in columns 9 and A and C and D. This holds true for both 60-250 and 50-135.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
50-135 file added for comparison.

Conversion to screwdrive seems to have fixed SDM (?)

I recently bought a used 60-250 lens of Ebay.

The lens was listed as being manual focus only (SDM failure I assumed).

I was aware that I could convert it to screwdrive focusing and that I needed an older camera model to perform the conversion.

Luckily for me I have a K-5 which is suitable for the converson.

When the lens arrived I put it on the K-5 and ... nothing. The lens didn't focus, as expected.

I then followed the true and tried instructions found here: How To: Convert SDM to ScrewDrive + Video - PentaxForums.com

I was lucky enough that the conversion worked in first try. After I had uploaded the edited lens file and deactivated the debug mode I switched the K-5 off and then on again and heard that beautiful sound which is the screwdrive!

Success! I am a master hacker! Focused on few things. Success confirmed.

I then removed the lens of K-5 and attached it to my KP believing I had converted it successfully. I had not attached it to the KP before I did the screwdrive conversion (may be important).

Oddly enough the lens makes no noise but it DOES FOCUS. SDM revived?

I tried it again on the K-5. At first try, nothing happened. I switched it back to the KP and it still focuses on the KP. I again attached it to the K-5 and oddly enough if I hold the focus button for a couple of seconds the lens starts to focus, silently, Screwdrive off and the SDM lives.

Since I didn't try it beforehand on the KP I don't really know what the success is. The lens definitely did focus with the screwdrive on the K-5 but then went silent focusing on the KP.

Anyone have any idea how this managed to happen? I'd love some insights.

cheers

Given how utterly useless 819200 ISO is ,and that everyone realizes it, Pentax should just limit their cameras to 100k ISO and include a potato for those that want potato like image quality.

New Pentax KP vs. used Nikon D800

I'm assuming you are a current pentax user.

Do you already have any Nikon lenses ?

For what it is worth you can compare IQ on dpreview. Just select the desired cameras. Seems to me that the KP is better at handling noise at high iso's.

I have one 10mm Samyang/Rokinon that is definitely decentered except it shows on the right side but exactly this look.

I bought it used and my guess is that the previous owner had returned it because it was decentered.

Unfortunately I only realized what decentering was after the 30 day return period had passed.

In your case I would return it, this isn't particularily useful for astrophotography.

I like Affinity Photo for working with combining multible frames into one image.

I mostly use it with bracketed photos for HDR and I find the results much more pleasing to the eye than many other HDR softwares.

As a single frame raw editor I do not like it so much and prefer to leave raw editing to other software.

Affordable DSLR body that's weather resistant?

Just by checking ebay you can easily find K-5 for under 300$ and K-5II and K-3 for close to 300$ (+/-)

However, as far as I know, the D7100 itself is weather sealed and apparently Nikon seems to have designed some weather "resistance" into their recent lenses. Including the 18-140, or I may be misunderstanding?

Which Nikkors Are Weather Resistant? | DSLRBodies | Thom Hogan

I'd guess K-3 has the same or equivalent sensor to the D7100 whereas the K-5 I and II have an older 16mp sensor.

Jumping back into Pentax - KP, K1, or switch to another brand?

As far as I know the Nikon D600/610 is the cheapest Full frame camera if bought used. I don't know the price of lenses that would be appropriate for you.

For Pentax I wonder whether your money would not be better served by going for a used K-5IIs and pairing it with a better lens. Maybe even K-3 with a higher pixel count.
The KP may have a better sensor but if you are shooting studio mostly is it a difference you'll notice?

Tripod Help

I can't imagine 40 libs max or 50 libs max making a difference for a 10 lib load (or less)

It is actually the tripod head that matters more.

I can't be bothered writing a long reply here but basically you can weigh a lighter tripod down to make it bulkier. You can (and should) balance a long lens (center of mass) and think about the tripod head ;)

Also, the best camera is the one you have. That also applies to tripods. Lighter is better when travelling.

Slightly sarcastic yes, but the d40 was a great camera. Unfortunately only 6 mp so with today standards you really start to see the limitation in resolution (and probably have since 2010 onwards).

But the main thing I liked about it was how light it was. I always took it with me when I was hiking and I didn't really appreciate how light it was until I handed it to somebody who was carrying a Nikon d300 with 28-300 lens and their first response was "Wow that's light".

Your bag may become damp or humid and fungus may start to thrive in the bag. So better to leave the camera somewhere dry with fresh air.

Don't store it in the bag when you're not using it. (and yeah, I'd get a bag for carrying :) )

Using a filter to protect the lens is a matter of a huge debate :)

You can buy a blower to remove dust from the sensor, but as long as you are not removing the lens dust will be a minor issue (unless dust otherwise is a huge issue where you live)

I do not know why there would be any benefits in constantly removing the lens from the camera while storing. I keep the lens on while in storage and have never known this to be an issue.

The first 2 look OK to me with regards to noise. The third one is the worst but not worse than I would necessarily expect from K-3 (or my K-5) at ISO 3200.

The blur plus the noise make it bad. I didn't notice at first how blurry the third one actually is.

Tripod - Astralphotography

I must admit that I am not familiar with this particular lens but it seems that the Soligor 450 comes with a tripod collar. So at least in theory you should be able to balance the lens + camera on the ball head, which would be optimal, otherwise you will always be dealing with creep regardless of how expensive the tripod and head are.

What is your budget?

For my 2 cents I am gonna recommend the Vanguard Alta Pro, the older version. You can buy the 263AB kit ,which is the 263 AT tripod plus the SBH-100 ball head, for about 120-30 $ on Amazon. Vanguard claims that the kit can support 15.4 pounds or 7kg. The older version comes with spikes which can be "hidden" or exposed buy adjusting rubber knobs on the bottom of the legs, the newer Alta Pro 2 series requires you to buy the spikes separately. Additionally the middle column can be rotated to horizontal which is always nice if you want to get low. I'm recommending the 263AB because I own one but also because I am not aware of any other similar "bang for the buck" tripod bundles at this pricepoint.
