When APSC Image quality is 2 stops better than FF...

Boy, some interesting response.

1. Sony won't sell very many of these. I don't think Sony cares about that. This is the definition of a niche camera. The issue isn't even so much the cost of the global shutter, it is the fact that the camera itself will cost 6000 dollars. That may be pocket change to the rest of you, but it means that it is way out of the price range for many people. I don't think there is any way that it sells more than all of the Pentax cameras put together do.

2. The global shutter clearly does have a cost. What this means is that even people who shoot sport will have other cameras that they use alongside their A9 III. Most of us can get by with 1/8000 second maximum shutter speed with mechanical shutters (or the rolling shutter effect that non-global electronic shutters offer). If you need a jack-of-all-trades camera, this simply ain't it.

3. I think the majority of people who are interested in this camera and its global shutter will understand the downside to it and will purchase it despite those downsides.

For me, it does say that this sort of feature isn't ready for general applications yet. Despite the nay-saying in this thread, I do think Pentax is working on a K-1 III and for the reasons mentioned in the DP Review article, I don't see them using this sort of feature. Their cameras need to do a little bit of everything. Sure, you can capture some sports with a Pentax K-1, but it certainly isn't going to be able to match an A9 IIII in performance -- even if it has significantly more dynamic range.

That said, the K-3 III, K-1 and K-1 II all have an electronic shutter and it works fine for specific applications. I have used it a bunch -- mostly for tripod shots -- and for that sort of thing it does eliminate shutter shake and I haven't seen rolling shutter effects one time.

(I think the biggest negative for sports photography is not the lack of dynamic range but losing a stop on the top end of high iso performance. That is, very few photographers will be able to hit 120 fps in dim arenas or under the lights, if their max iso is 6400.)

Actually the K70 has old, small pixels and the A9II has new, large pixels. You'd expect the A9 to stomp the K70 on IQ but it's the opposite because of compromises forced on Sony by the global shutter.

If you measure camera performance by the quantity of images it creates, the A9 clearly wins.

If you measure camera performance by the quality of images it creates, the K70 and most other Pentax cameras clearly win.

The OVF versus EVF is a big mixed bag of pluses and minuses -- a subjective choice rather that a clear objective winner. (Mirrorless may be popular, but so is McDonalds so popularity is not always the same as superiority.)

The A9 has benefits that are hard to ignore but it also has downsides that are hard to ignore.

To each his own, get the right tool for the job, and have fun taking whatever sorts of images one wants!

I was browsing B&H's website and came across a holiday sale for the KP battery grip for $59 (regularly $179). I was surprised to see that they would have any new/old stock for a discontinued camera. If anyone's was looking for one here's your chance.

New Lensbaby Velvet 56mm f1.6 in PK mount

One of the things I dislike the most about using lensbaby lenses is the inevitable comment from someone somewhere arguing that the same effect can be done for cheaper or in post production. I don't wholly disagree, a few google searches will show some photoshop tutorials on how to fake a lensbaby affect. Maybe vaseline on a filter does work quite well... but always the flow goes like this;

1) I upload a lensbaby shot
2) I get a comment from someone stating it can be done for cheaper or in PP
3) I agree or disagree (depending on the effect)
4) I point out that some may lack the PP skills to make the effect plausible and authentic in PP, and that perhaps trying to mimic the effect out in the field with vaseline or something else is just annoying and in practice no one really actually can be bothered to do it.
5) They never show their results of an image taken with a normal lens and PP manipulated or some lens hack to illustrate their point. (which I would love to see, as I love hacks and ingenuity, and would also be interesting to compare the effects etc, is it close or far from the same quality etc).
6) I continue to shoot with lensbaby glass (and the cycle repeats).

So in short, if you have the glass in the cabinet, you are simply more likely to take it out and use it, the rest is irrelevant really.

Glad you liked the shots.

FWIW also, the lensbaby is ridiculously sharp, around f5.6-8 it is possibly my sharpest lens in the cabinet!

Pentax announcement: Considering developing new film camera

There is an announcement up today that Pentax is starting a Film Project, which includes the possibility of making new film cameras.

This announcement is in English too, so please take a look at the announcement, which explains some of the thinking behind this.

PENTAX brand launches a film camera project focused on developing new film-based products along with camera fans?RICOH IMAGING

Personally, I think this is a good idea. This is something that is only possible because of the SLR design, so it gives the system more uniqueness over mottoes models. (Leica M is the only other one to do this)[COLOR="Silver"]

Pentax K-3 Mark III: The Ultimate Guide, as the name implies, is meant to be a comprehensive guide to help you get the most out of your K-3 III camera. It focuses on practical use cases and real-word trips, and is thus the perfect supplement to the highly verbose owner's manual.

Update: the eBook is now available! Purchase and download here

This is the first new eBook since Yvon Bourque, the author of all prior Pentax eBooks, passed away in 2020. Bernard ( @bdery , the primary author of the new eBook) and I hope to honor his legacy by continuing making these kinds of eBooks available to the Pentax community. Writing this eBook has been a significant undertaking, and we look forward to your feedback and enjoyment of the book.

A new set of authors means a new approach: this 160+ page PDF eBook is suitable for viewing on a PC or Tablet, and has been enhanced with digital-friendly features such as a native table of contents, clickable links between chapters/sections, and links to useful external resources and guides on the forum. New Lens Patents, including 24-90 f4

A set of new lens patents have come to light today from Ricoh.

24-90mm F4 - This could be a like a revival of the FA24-90. I had that for a while, and I really liked he range/size/performance, even on APS-C.

18-90mm F3.5-5.6

12-35mm F2.8 for 4/3 format - I wonder if this is for a compact

The whole report is here, including some others.
https://asobinet.com/info-patent-24-90mm-f4/

Is that a 40-145 F2.8 and a variable aperture 18-300 as well among them?

As always, these may never be commercialized, but at least this time they do not seem got be variants of already existing lenses.

I wonder if anyone more adept at reading the patents can offer a more insightful interpretation

Edit: Further coverage here

New Lens Patents, including 24-90 f4

A few observations:
  • The patent application was filed on the 24th of February, 2021 (application number: P2021-27679) and published today (publication number: P2022-129113A), one and a half years after the filing, as usual

  • There are two focusing lens groups, on either side of the aperture -this often translates into better optical quality at close focusing distance

  • Focusing is therefore internal

  • Zooming is external except otherwise stipulated (see below)

  • The patent application includes 11 numerical examples

  • Six numerical examples are about 24-90mm f/4 lenses covering the 24x36 format

  • Example 9 is about a 18-300mm f/3.5-5.6 lens covering the APS-C format but with too short a backfocus (35.3mm) for a K-mount lens

  • Example 7 is about a 18-90mm f/3.5-5.6 for µ4/3 cameras, with internal zooming

  • Example 8 is about a 12-50mm f/3.5-5.6 for µ4/3 cameras; zooming is almost internal (the rear group moves a bit when zooming)

  • Example 11 is about a 12-35mm f/2.8 covering the 4/3 format but with too short a backfocus (7.55mm) for an ILC; zooming is almost internal

  • Example 10 is about a 28-150 f/2.8 covering the 1-inch format

I would therefore say that this patent application pertains to a Pentax 24-90mm f/4, the other numerical examples being there to extend the protection granted by the patent.

Last but not least: do you remember this post by asahi man on the Digital Photography Review's forum, one year ago?

Source: Mystery lens: Pentax SLR Talk Forum: Digital Photography Review

It appears asahi man was right concerning the "DFA macro" but the so-called "DFA 4.0 24-105" might rather be a 24-90mm.

if Pentax could afford three levels of zoom lens - I see some logic
1.) 15-30/2.8 + 24-70/2.8 + 70-200/2.8
2.) 24-90/4 + 70-210/4
3.) 28-105/3.5-5.6 + 70-300/4.5-5.6

each group meets certain optical qualities and possibilities and does not force the user to buy something that is not necessary for him and too expensive for his style of photography

My K3 was stuck in manual mode so today my friend and I took the top off the camera and found the cause of the problem. The wiper contacts that are attached to the mode dial with plastic nubs or rivets for lack of a better term.
The plastic broke so we glued it in place with crazy glue and for now it’s working.
I will upload a picture to show it.

That's not sensor dust its something stuck on your sensor. The sensor dust removal only removes loosely attached dust particles nothing else.
Its time to invest in a Pentax Sensor Cleaning Kit 0-ICK1. https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/618600-REG/Pentax_39357_O_ICK1_Image_...981& or take it to a shop and get it cleaned.

I’m often surprised by the amount of “sticky” dust that can accumulate on a sensor, even with the dust removal setting. It usually shows up on cloudless sky shots, especially those that require some PP work, like your low-contrast shot here. Try shooting a few clear sky or blank wall shots (not through your windshield). You may find you need to clean your sensor, as I did after I prepared my last posting.

The Pentax DFA 15-30 can produce some striking starbursts. I think that it rivals the DA21. Discussed at length here:

Always fun to see oneself quoted in this fashion ;)

Oh, my. Respectfully, those starbursts are really ugly. They do not compare with what the 15 or 21 can deliver.

Every lens review I wrote for Pentaxforums includes a subsection about starbursts, that's a good starting points.

The best lenses I've tested (and that's a lot) are the 15, 21, 43. The FA20-35 isn't bad either but needs to be stepped down a bit. The 70 is indeed pretty good but isn't a full frame lens. The FA24 and FA31 are also good, but with more rays in the case of the 31, almost too many.

I did quick and dirty video, with no cross fades, ect...but I did do some grading in Da Vinci resolve. I used HDR nodes and then adjusted some balance with all of them. I could have gone further, but I decided to see what this looks like.
All in all I'm happy with that result. I did shoot it in 4K, but edited it to be 1080.

Set was monopod +ballhead and K-3III and DA*55. I did get some added stability. And it was light and manoverable set. This was in my mind(not this exactly) when I thought that this could be fun set up. Fun, agile and good enough image quality.

Well look at it your self.

Yeah, I did play around with camera today. Just quick note. SR and camera struggle with 4K 24fps, and there is simple explnation for that one thing is that 24 FPS and panning speed all in all at that speed if one want smooth result. @ 30 FPS it is better, for that same reson. I switched to FHD and 60 FPS and it does really stabilise the whole camera for even complete hand held use through out. It is smoooooth. Not only SR working well, but also jello being minimised quite a bit, almost to none. THIS is amazing. I'll play around with that after work. And report back later...

When I entered the computing field, IBM was split between "big iron" and "little iron" supporters. "Little iron" {mini-computers the size of a filing cabinet} seemed to lose out over time. After they and Microsoft went their separate ways, they did announce that OS/2 was going to be the basis of all future systems, but I never saw any evidence of that. In 1994, a year before Microsoft entered real multi-tasking with their Win95 system, I tried to buy an OS/2 system for our home, but I couldn't find anyone at IBM willing to sell one to me. At the time, I had a friend in industry whose company developed software for several operating systems, but their developers all used OS/2 systems, so I knew it was in use, but the company was not willing to sell one to me. They were at least a year ahead of Microsoft in software, but way behind them in marketing. So, IBM's small computers are more complicated than represented here.
