Halfway Decent Secondary / Street Travel Camera - K-01 or...?

I think I'd still go with your original idea of a K-01. Still provides great raw file quality to this day, and the charger and most controls are also the same as your K-1 ii. Any lenses you get (the 'plastic fantastics' are surprisingly good and very light) will also work (at least to some degree) with your K-1 ii. And after your trip, you'd probably find that you'd reach for the K-01 during many occasions that you wouldn't necessarily pull out the K-1 ii. (If you do get a K-01, make sure the latest firmware is installed... it's still very old, but it improved on the auto focus capability of the original firmware quite a bit.)

Does the K1 Mark II still make sense to buy today? Is there an Mark III in the works?

I definitely think it would be worth it to add the K1 II - starting for the reasons you mentioned, and for many other reasons given in this thread. I'd personally hang onto the K5 as well for a second (and APS-C focused) body if you can. As many have stated, I also don't think the next iteration of the K1 is 'just around the corner'. In addition to the reasons supplied already, I'll add a few more thoughts...

It would be useful to upgrade to any modern Pentax DSLR from the K5 specifically because:
- In addition to getting faster autofocus speed and additional low-light autofocus opportunities, you'll also get much surer autofocus in some mixed-lighting situations, especially those involving tungsten light.
- You'll lose the AA filter, which will immediately add a degree of sharpness to all your output.

The image stabilization is much improved in recent models, and there are other new options like pixel-shift, additional bracketing options, etc.

And one more thing the K1 II has (that the neither the K5 or K3 III has) is the rear screen that tilts and pivots, which can come in very handy at times.

Portrait Lens Recommendations

For the first longer lens for that purpose, I'd definitely go with a 70-200mm f2.8. I have Sigmas (before the Pentax came out), and although they are great, I'd definitely go for the Pentax now. But if you are even considering a manual focus, fixed-length lens, it would be wise to check out the Samyang 135mm f2.0. (Just take a look in the lens reviews.)

Need advice on portrait lenses

I'll add another strong vote for including the Pentax DA* 50-135mm f2.8. For APS-C, I think you'd wind up getting more high quality wedding and portrait shots (indoor and outdoor) from that lens than from any other. I've certainly gotten more photoshoot keepers from that lens than from any other APS-C lens. (Going back to the 6MP - 16MP days, the Tamron 28-75mm f2.8 was also quite good / handy, but I don't think it would fare nearly as well with the K3 III.) Have to add that the SDM did die on my 50-135, though mine is an earlier copy. Once I converted it to screw drive (using instructions from PF!), I actually liked the lens even better. Also use it for landscape views, flowers, fall color, still lifes, etc.

As for the for the Pentax DA* 55mm f1.4, although it *can* be a '10' in terms of portrait image quality, mine has often been an '8' or '9' in terms of focus aggravation - sometimes, the micro-adjustments go on and on, causing fleeting moments to be missed. Given your planned setup, keep in mind you could also pick up an inexpensive copy of the 'plastic fantastic' Pentax DA 50mm f1.8... Might be good to have ready on the K-70 body, and your wife may find lots of good subjects / uses for it! (The image quality wouldn't be as stellar as the 55mm, but it would inexpensively provide bokeh options in the same general mm ballpark, and it would likely focus faster and more assuredly than the 55mm.)

Beyond that, I'd add that it would be kind of a shame to set up new Pentax outfits without at least one FA Limited! The warmer, more 'filmic' look would go well with your chosen topics, and the overall look would add some diversity to what your other lenses could supply.

Just three lenses, your pick?

Given the constraints of the original post, my first two lens choices would probably be pretty easy. I’d probably pick the Pentax D FA 24-70mm f2.8 (primarily for use on a K-1) and the Pentax DA* 50-135mm f2.8 (for use on a KP).

Picking the third lens would be tougher, and it would split duty between a K-1 and a KP. If the year wasn’t 2020 (with social distancing due to the pandemic), my first inclination would probably be the Pentax D FA* 50mm f1.4. If we’re still stuck in 2020 when this 3 lens situation occurs, I’d probably lean toward the Pentax D FA 100mm F2.8 Macro WR, but I might combine aspects of the two lenses just mentioned and go with the Pentax D FA 50mm F2.8 Macro.

If I got to choose from lenses that would probably never really be available to me, that third lens would either be the Pentax FA* 200mm f4 Macro or the Pentax FA*250-600mm f5.6. Heck, I wouldn’t even be that picky for the dream lens… I’d be very happy with either.

For the overall solution, however, I’d also be more than happy using monochrome’s approach (in post #35) in conjunction with a K-1 and a KP.

The post was just made yesterday - it's less than 24 hours old. It's actually still there, but you probably need to join the group "PENTAX K-1 Full Frame DSLR" in order to see it. The creator originally stated that it was all just in jest, and that lead-in paragraph has now been updated further...

Little madness during the lockdown!! 😜😜

I remind you that this is a joke, which I made during the lockdown of the covid 19. Of course it's just fun, I remind this, because some sites have published this article in rumor

Tamron 35mm SP

It's always possible that this Tamron lens could be tweaked, recoated, and re-branded as "Pentax" at some point in the future. We know that collaboration has been intact for some recent zoom lens offerings. There's still not a lot of clarity and consistency regarding the wide-angle primes on the lens roadmap... and the roadmap won't cover every potential lens anyway.

Not doubting there may be instances of shutter shock with some specific combinations of a 28-105 and a K1. I never expect the old 'reciprocal' rule to apply with a zoom, however. Compared to a 28mm prime, the 28-105 is a relatively long, thin barreled lens... When using zooms, I weigh the longest end (e.g., 105) pretty heavily with regard to 'hand holding' shutter speed expectations.

If they could really do all that and maintain the current rendering, then yes, it would be a winning formula. It may be a lot tougher than it sounds, though. Rather than trying to maintain the rendering and retrofit the optical designs into new lens parameters, it may actually be more viable to use modern technology to create new HD DFA LTDs (as @monochrome pointed out) in other focal lengths. And then Pentax users have even more choices. (If it is actually pretty straightforward to retrofit those older optical designs into modernized lenses and maintain the IQ, then Pentax should resurrect the 200mm macro and a couple other lenses as well!)

Yes. I think people primarily buy the FA LTDs for the unique rendering (as it is now), not primarily to fill a prime 'gap' around the given focal length. And I'd even bet most buyers are still primarily APS-C users, not full frame users... Many of us bought these before the original K-1 was ever announced.

Unless there was a pretty surefire way to maintain the overall renderings in modernized versions of these lenses, I think Pentax would be smart not to tinker with these particular designs. They are legendary, unique differentiators for Pentax. Add new similar modernized designs (high quality, small, light weight, fast but not f1.4) whenever that is possible.

Wants and needs were different back then. For example, the best modern zooms (such as the current DFAs) already cover much of this ground extremely well, and most people would just perform the effects of the 'soft' lenses in PP. I don't think many modern Pentaxians would really want, use, or buy many of the lens variants above. Some of the best are still available (and still unique and fantastic!), and there are also some new primes that are far better than the former version(s), even though the spec may differ slightly from the former version(s).

Pentax is in the process of filling out the few key gaps. But it would also be great to eventually get some of the unique 'differentiators' back in the lineup, such as the 200/4 macro.

DP Review puts K-1 Mark II as second worst camera of 2018

As is usually the case on PF, I was able to learn a lot from the discussion in this thread. I’m sure I’ll actually refer back to some of the more technical details in the future. The discussion also helped to consider and understand the different viewpoints.

As for me, I guess I ‘split the difference’ in practice. I love my KP the way it is, because it is great to get such fantastic low-light performance in such a small form factor. Definitely wouldn’t complain if it had an option to occasionally ‘switch off’ the accelerator, but even if it did, I’d leave the accelerator on as the default on that camera. (Maybe I’d switch it off for occasional macros.) On the other hand, I opted not to upgrade my K-1. The low-light performance is already outstanding, and there are more times (ex – wide landscapes) that I might be trying to eek out every last ounce of detail. I’d also be willing to spend more time in PP in such cases. Again, I might have thought differently if there was an easy option to switch the accelerator off…but overall, I felt it was better to allocate the money toward new glass. Very cool that Pentax even provided the option to upgrade, and really looking forward to finding out what CP+ and the 100 year anniversary brings!

DP Review puts K-1 Mark II as second worst camera of 2018

Absolutely. Like it or not, DPR has an enormous amount of influence on people considering photography equipment and evaluating brands. Their equipment review material can even appear directly within related Pentax product links on Amazon. In the case of PentaxForums, in addition to being a top 'hit' for searches for Pentax product names, it is well-known to be the most knowedgeable source for 'all things Pentax'. So it's also particularly disheartening to sometimes see misinformation (or blatant falsehoods!) spread here.

Addressing and correcting such scenarios in either place has a major impact on anyone seeking background for the related products or functionality. It's particularly important and helpful for less informed users that really need the information the most. (And of course, Pentax also doesn't have the gigantic marketing arm of Canon to help offset such bad information. Currently, those two photographic names probably represent the two ends of the marketing spectrum, at least outside of Japan.)

Unfortunately, calling out specific posters does need to be done at times. The postings from Punk earlier in this thread are a classic example. It was nothing but condescending, dogmatic statements. No actual reasoning, just pretentious statements that were designed to provoke. If there was even a shred of sincerity (and a true desire to help ‘educate’ fellow forum members), I’d expect to see some reasoning, supported by images from said photography equipment – and preferably taken by the person consistently shouting the claims. (And in that case, mocking an entire forum!)

DPR also needs to be regularly called out, due to the following powerful combination.
1. They consistently misrepresent Pentax capabilities. They also consistently ignore important aspects of the system (at least until such features are mimicked by another company),and they often put a negative spin on things that could be viewed as a positive feature (or are at least neutral).
2. They have a very wide audience and sphere of influence. Most of that was gained in earlier years, before they had their current spin and arrangement with Amazon. Unfortunately, a lot of viewers don’t know (or remember) that, and the critical mass is there now.

I’m very glad there are people that keep an eye on these scenarios and call them out when they occur. It certainly does add value for Pentax / Pentaxians and for prospective buyers that are considering various systems, or even just learning about photography. (And I imagine for every 1 very knowledgeable PF member that hits the ‘ignore’ button, there may be 10 other less knowledgeable members or ‘lurkers’ that are potentially being influenced by false statements and vitriol.)

Definitely. The list could go on for the pro-sumer advantages (true photography user interface, 5 customizable presets right on the dial, tilt LCD...) and the accelerator seems to provide better image quality (especially for high ISO situations) even for similar/identical sensors. And even for a noob, just the 5-Axis shake reduction system would make a huge difference.

K5 PC flash sync socket

I've not used any flashes I'd consider risky, but as for studio strobes, I've used Buff (Paul C. Buff) strobes through the X-sync socket on my Pentax cameras for years. I've used them many times on the K-5 and K-5 II s, and probably most often (so far) on the K20D. FYI, the main strobes I've used are the "Einstein" and the ABR800 ringflash. I've never noticed even a hint of a problem, though I've always used them as recommended and with Buff cables/connections as well.

These strobes have worked fine through that socket on subsequent Pentax cameras as well, including the K-1. The only related 'surprise' I've ever had was that the K-P doesn't come with such a socket! As far as I'm concerned, that is actually the main shortcoming that keeps it from being an APS-C flagship, haha! I have used the same strobes through a Pentax connector on top of the hot shoe for the K-P, but that connector seemed to be tough to find when I last looked.

Wow! It appears these K-1 deals are back again, at least temporarily! Adorama has the package deals again (with the battery grip, etc.), though it is on backorder. B&H has a similar price for the body. Still think these deals are too good to last - a great time to pick up a K-1 for anyone that is thinking about it.
