It looks a bit over-saturated ... did you underexpose the image and let the camera auto-adjust the image? It's actually quite a neat effect.
I'd like to take a look at the raw file's settings, if you have them.

And more power to you. I'm just saying that the commercial nature and broad appeal of a piece isn't an actual basis of critique. It's certainly frustrating when artistic garbage is popular -- but being popular doesn't make something artistic garbage.
Incidentally, my other favorite Kubrick film is A Clockwork Orange. ^.^

If you're only going to take 2 lenses with you, methinks the 10 - 17 and the 55-300.
But I would encourage you to consider looking into some fast primes like the 1.8 50. The jewel of my collection is my 2.0 55 because it's fast, perfect for portraits, and is fairly tough for as light as it is.

Nah, don't even bother. You can Jerry rig a flash bounce/diffuser with a white piece of card stock, a rubber band, and a pair of scissors. If you don't want to do that, there are tons of products on eBay for under ten bucks.
There are tons of LED devices on eBay for under 50 bucks that would do the same thing. In my experience, these LED devices don't provide enough light to be useful for portraits at ISO 100. Save your money, buy a real flash.

Agreed. Autofocus zooms work just fine, but I never knew what I was missing until I came across an old Vivitar internal zoom manual focus lens. I don't think I would use any other kind by choice now.

My wallet has been getting HAMMERED and I thought I would show off my latest purchase.
Kiron 28-70mm f/3.5 - 4.5 Macro
Just a couple of quick test shots from this little baby. I'm quite enjoying it so far if only because it's my first PKA mount lens, where I can actually have some EXIF data. I think there may be some loose ball bearings somewhere inside because it rattles, and the focus seems like it doesn't have enough resistance. I have yet to clean the elements, but I think the images look a bit soft wide open, although I think I quite like it.

 They really don't like being stuffed in the boxes, especially when you have catnip in the same shipment.

Completely willing to agree to disagree. The texture of the fur with that motion blur does something -- some je ne sais quoi. That being said, normally I would agree with you. But the more I look at it, the more it just screams at me. ^.^
Cats make great models, I'm finding. Dogs seems a bit too enthusiastic and eager to put their noses right on to the front element of the lens. lol
