Yeah, you just lighten the shadows, darken highlights, and/or adjust the midtone contrast. All easily done in camera raw or photoshop, and to an extent in camera.

If you're using auto HDR (which I don't think the K20D has), then yes, you'd get blurry images with a moving subject.

The solution is to shoot in RAW and lift the shadows manually. You'll get the same effect :)
