After last week's aviation themed offerings, I decided to try some equine subjects and made my first visit to a local trotting course. I pitted my MF skills with the 645Z and 67-M300/4 against my Canon 1Dx and stabilised 200/2....the 1Dx won by a greater distance than any of the competitors at the meeting.
Here's a couple where I managed to get DoF region close enough to look reasonable (at web sizes). Compared to other sports with a mechanical element, it's difficult to find a shutter speed that gives the impression of movement (wheel blur) without losing the definition of the horse's reciprocating legs.

I believe that this type of display routine was common in the UK up until a few high profile accidents in the late 70's/early 80's (I visited shows on a weekly basis). Things were then tightened up with the minimum height and display line to crowd line being increased considerably resulting in a totally different perspective along with the need to ustilise much longer lenses.

Thank you Erik....I was quite pleased generally as they're my first airborne attempts with the 645Z and I would have normally reached for my Canon 35mm outfit.
No major cropping other than a little for the aspect ratio and compositional change...the shots are perhaps what I'd have got with 400mm.....I really was allowed to get close to the action. I had 420mm as an option (1.4x rear converter) but that would have meant a higher shutter speed even less ideal for prop blurr.
The last example (Bronco) was cropped more severely as it displayed quite high (lots of loops, wing overs and rolls)

I'm also a 58'er, Chris, and well remember the halycon days when every plane was a different shape. Living just a stone's throw from Manchester airport, it was my interest in aircraft that started my interest in photography....using an old Agfa Billy Record (which I still have)
I was very much on terra firma and the tree line is just out of shot. A tentative request to leave the spectator's enclosure, and position myself by the strip, was granted so long as I didn't get in the way......so refreshing these days.
1/1 is about my limit (without the benefit of image stabilsation) although a little slower would have improved the prop blurr. Today's often seen restrictions about display height and distance from the crowd line didn't seem to be enforced so things were much closer than you'd normally see.
Here's a couple more from the same shooting position.... ---------- Post added 07-26-16 at 12:53 AM ---------- As there seems to be a smattering of interest in old planes then here's a few more from last weekend......all with the 67 M300/4 on the 645Z
Broussard (1950's French design for ariel observation)
Pilatus P-3 (1950's Swiss designed trainer) highlighting the need for a slower shutter speed than that of which I was capable.

Don't you just love the sound of radial engines, Cuthbert. Your Chipmunk is actually a Yak-52 powered by a throaty radial whereas the Chipmunk had a Gypsy Major 8 (4 cylinder in-line) derived from the engine used to power the Tiger Moth.
Lovely shots though.

I got the chance to shoot an old A4-DN Skyraider so thought I'd try to give it that retro look from the its era (the 60's). Shot against an impending storm with a 67-M300/4 on a 645Z 1/320th @ f/8 Iso 100 |

I did a test when I first got the Z......5 stops underexposed. These are screen shots from LR6
....the shot as captured and then pulled up 5 stops.

I'll go with the trails too. On the water I prefered the shot without and I think that (for me personally) water is a natural feature and it appeared adulterated whilst roads are meant for cars so trails aren't out of place.

It's interesting to see the trails but, from an asthetic point of view, I prefer the less busy version.

Thanks for the appraisal Unkipunki and Matt. Unfortunately, the edit to the post was to reload the image after a little additional sharpening because I thought it wasn't quite there....wrong!
I'm off to the Pyrenees next week so I'll have the type of subject that I bought the 645Z for.

I'm starting to get to grips with the 645Z after 45 years of shooting 35mm (I started with a 120 Agfa folding camera). Any (including brutal) criticism welcome as I'm not yet sure myself where I'm heading.

For anybody interested....
This is a Dassault Mercure. In the early 70's, Dassault decided to try and grab some of Boeing's 737 market. With huge loans from the French government and a break even build of 200 aircraft, the total order book was 10 examples (all bought by Air Inter). The production line was dismantled in 1975 and the last aircraft withdrawn from service in 1995.

Keep in mind that you have to hike 6 times further to frame the same shot with your 50mm lens ;)

It'll help a great deal thank you. Reading here and elsewhere, I grabbed the Huelight profiles when I picked up the 645Z and I'm happy with the imrovements over the Adobe standard version. I've spent 40 years shooting 35mm and exclusively Canon in the digital era so the PP has become a little too habitual based on that.
Cheers

Please forgive me for asking this but could you show us a quick Jpeg version pre-PP and then a general idea of how you processed the shots to achieve the final look?
Thanks in anticipation....

I'm not always the best at envisaging a 'post capture' change in aspect ratio so I carry a Leinox directors viewfinder when I'm out and about. It has two variables; aspect ratio and focal length (needs some intuitive recalculation for diffent sensor sizes). One simply adjusts the aspect ratio dial whilst viewing the scene and then note the position of a suitable feature so that it can be placed at a similar point in the viewfinder.......put ike that, it sounds complicated but it quickly becomes second nature.
