How to deactivate SDM and allow for screw drive autofocus with DA* 16-50mm f/2.8

One of my previous ones (50-135) was in a similar state to yours. Must have been left in storage for ages after the elderly owner passed away. It was sold as clearance and the SDM seemed to be not working. I opened it up and gave it a bit of a massage and it started working intermittently. After a bit more use it was probably the fastest SDM unit I'd ever used. (Sold it off later but that's just opportunistic!)

@UncleVanya

I've seen the same behaviour with my 50-135mm. Hunting takes a lot of small movements and I think the SDM just isn't up for it so the camera gives up. At f/2.8 the lens is wide enough to lock on focus when seeing might be difficult (and screwdrive helps in this case).

The SDM unit is quiet but takes a split second to start spinning (inertia) whereas the screwdrive jerks quite quickly into action. That's probably why it seems so much faster. It's more responsive.

I converted my 50-135 to screwdrive the other day using my k100d. There are more lines to change on these compared to the 16-50.

Also, the store function worked this time around so it was pretty cool to use. Maybe last time I was referring to a different issue. I think it was that I wasn't able to change more than one value consecutively on the camera itself. I kept needing to restart the camera to move onto the next data point.

This time it was straightforward on the PC.

No idea to be honest. It just didn't work for me as far as I remember. I'll be trying again with a 50-135 I've bought recently. I'll test out both SDM and Screwdrive functions with it as it has a sluggish motor. Nice and cheap tho!

I wasn't able to get the file out of my 16-50 using my K100d when I tried a while ago. I made all the changes manually, restarting the camera for every change I think as well. I did not operate the lens until the code change was completed.

I bought a K100d with a 'memory card error' and a broken 55-300 DA L lens for peanuts. It turns out that the DSLR body is absolutely mint and was used with the wrong SD(HC) card. Absolutely worth it!

I managed to convert my 16-50 to screwdrive using the DSLR itself (no SD card reader yet). It worked perfectly, and funnily enough the noise from the AF isn't that bad. It's pretty quick to focus as well.

I'm in the UK (Yorkshire) so if there's anyone that wants to possibly meet me in order to convert their 16-50 then I'd be willing to help out.
