Sunset at Sennen, Cornwall
An enlargement of the horizon at sunset showing the flash of colour that sometimes occurs as the top of the sun tips below the horizon. Due to refraction of the light through the earth's atmosphere this can result in flashes of yellow, less often green, and sometimes blue. In this case the left hand end of the flash is a green/blue. Thank you. Although I prepared to take the photos from which this image was chosen, I didn't expect a green flash on this occasion because I thought there was too much cloud - but not on the horizon as it turned out.

"Green Flash" Porthmeor Sunset, St. Ives, Cornwall - Since being regaled by Ron Sutherland, a garden and plant photographer, about green flashes on the horizon at sunset, I have tried to capture the phenomenon. I've managed to capture an image of a flash on three prior occasions, but this is the clearest image - and on your "home beach", Ron, and it's sad you're no longer here to have seen it.
The camera was set to capture a burst of images which covered the length of time the flash was visible - about 2 seconds. |
