Mm, it is 2018 though, but of course I wouldn't know the depreciation rate of something complicated such as a dslr sensor. In any rate, maybe it's that new chip that is reducing the issue? I see the dots in room temperature at any iso with NR off, but I had 0 problems with it shooting outside in winter nights, so it's definitely a heat issue with my unit..

Wonder if you know - if I upgrade my K-1, would they swap the sensor as well (assuming white dots is sensor related), or I'll still have the same sensor plus the accelerator chip. I'm still contemplating if I want to upgrade or not..

Would be a nice test to see. Although I wonder if it also "eats" faint stars.

I don't see white dots in exposures under 1m (at least I don't believe i do) with NR off. Also shooting stars this winter showed that I don't get white dots at all with fairly long exposures with NR off. Last summer I had issues with 2-3m exposures with NR off and whatever iso I tried. Had to use the NR, which doubled my exposures and annoyed me a bit.

off topic - why can't we get LiveComp mode like in Olympus bodies, star trails are a breeze in that thing :)

Definitely. I've just shipped my camera out to Precision, hope they'll be able to help me. I dunno if I'm over reacting, I actually just noticed those for the first time after a full year of enjoying the camera, but I figured if it's not normal, and I bought the damn extended warranty, might as well use it and get an even better camera (fingers crossed) :)

They immediately told me to call Precision Camera that repairs Pentax products in USA, and Precision just told me to send it in, no questions asked. It seemed like they know about the issue, but I can't be certain as they haven't admitted it outright. I also mentioned the shutter shock issue, they asked to send the lens in as well. I'm doing some final tests now, I tried the pixel mapping, will see if it does anything.

Hmm conflicting info) person above suggesting it's within norm, I've also uploaded my cap on raws few months ago and people seemed to say my unit was one of the better ones. Could my sensor somehow get worse over time? Because right now it seems to produce a ton of hot pixels without the long exposure noise reduction

Did your unit get a lot better after calibration?

Thanks for the tip! I guess I can work around it, although I am a little annoyed that I have to, seems like a rather large oversight, or a deliberate compromise?

Hmm. So any exposure over 60 seconds produces hot pixels with this or similar sensors? (I mean with d800, d800e and d810)

Because I see hot pixels in 60s exposures too, same places (shadows).

Also, I see way more than 25 of them in lightroom, maybe dark table automatically removes some of them? I know capture one has a hot pixel suppression module that lightroom still lacks (which sucks). I managed to quite easily remove hot pixels in my shot after trying a "scratch & dust filter - darken" method I found online, so I guess I can work around this issue if sending it to pentax won't do any good.

Just curious, do other ff cameras have similar issues with very long exposures?

Raw link below.
I've switched off all extra things such as highlight/shadow comp, lens geometry correction etc etc. All noise reduction was off too.
I used astrotracer for the shot previous to the one I've uploaded, hoping to use pin point stars from that frame and combine it with the sharp foreground from the second frame.

Just curious - is there any way to fix the white dots in LR/PS? Or I'd need the Capture One with the hotpixel module? Wondering if this sequence is salvageable

hmm, I thought LR export would include exif, sorry! Was shot at iso 800, 240sec, temp was around 9 degrees Celcius. Shot was forth of fifth out of the sequence, I was trying different settings and Astrotracer on/off, so I guess sensor would be a little warm at least from doing few long exposure settings in a row. Any other details you'd need? I can also upload my raw file if you want to have a look at it. It'd be a bummer if this is the best I can expect from K-1 without the noise reduction enabled :(

Sorry to resurrect the old thread! Last night I went out to shoot some stars, and found a ton of white dots in the long exposures. I've shot stars previously but haven't noticed more than a handful of white dots in shadows, but that was with auto noise reduction for long exposures (which adds a dark frame). I guess now I see how much it was filtering out. It didn't bother me before, but after turning the dark frame off I did enjoy the much faster process (don't have to wait twice as long, really starts to add up after going towards 2-3 minute exposures and higher), and would much rather have it off. I'm thinking to send my camera to Pentax for a tune up, has anyone here had a successful outcome with Pentax USA? I bought my K-1 exactly a year ago, but I should be covered with my extended warranty I've purchased right away. I was thinking to send my DFA 28-105 in anyway for a tune up (slight decentering), might as well send the camera with it.

Thoughts?

Please see the original size image with raised shadows and slightly bumped exposure, the effect is easily seen at 100% magnification

I don't see them when I pull shadows so they don't bother me. Never pushed an exposure +5EV in real shots, so I don't know how they'd look

I don't think I have any significant amount of white dots in the iso 100 file, or I just don't see them. I pulled the file to +5 EV, had mostly crushed blacks, with few white specs here and there. Is that not normal? There should be no white dots at all?

Maybe me purchasing K-1 later than I wanted in the beginning is a good thing, maybe it's a manufacturing thing and later units have better QC, don't know. At iso 100 I pushed +5 EV in lightroom and didn't see noise, just few white dots (very minor amount). Actually, funny thing, I left my clipping detection on and iso 100 came back completely blue, I had a panic attack for a second thinking something was wrong. Then I realized it was only showing me completely black areas. I noticed at one of my iso 100 sunrise shots, that I was able to pull the shadows to the end, plus add +1 ev with a brush to the shadow areas and get a completely clean result. I guess I'm lucky I avoided some of the issues presented here, counting my blessings now..

Hmm, my exposure seems even darker than the calibrated one. If I had an uwa to play with I'd get out and test astro for noise, maybe I'll try to shoot few with the 50 and stitch them together. Curious to see real world astro/LE performance from my unit. I haven't noticed much noise at low iso's even after pulling shadows all the way, and cranking the exposure a step. But even such layman as myself can see the difference between all 4 sensors, I wouldn't expect 100% identical performance from 4 different units, but I thought they'd be closer to each other than they are in the samples.
