I thought it also had to do with the physical properties of camera sensors vs. film, with the angle of the light entering not mattering as much on film, but the tendency to "cut off" earlier on sensors the further away from the center of the image the rays are - and the more angled they are because of that? Which also means that the effect is more pronounced on wide angle lenses than normal or telephoto lenses...

Oh yes it does, very much so, especially at or near 1.8. But I'm postprocessing the pictures anyway, depends on the picture if I let DxO correct the vignetting or not, sometimes the natural vignetting helps make the subject pop more, sometimes it would be very noticable if uncorrected, but it's just a single click in the software and a matter of taste in the end. I don't typically add an artificial vignette to my pictures, but on some pictures I love the effect of a natural vignette caused by the lens.
On those two pictures I did not uncheck the correction, but it wouldn't have been very noticable on those I think.

SMC FA 43 on K-1 Flowering Tree at Sunset
No picture to pixelpeep as this was taken handheld and wide open, but I really like the feel of it. I think the colour gradient in the sky is a fitting background for the tree's blossoms

Great shot! 43 or 77? I'd say 77 because it's got that hint of tele compression look?

You haven't tried a Highland Park before? I think a 16yo Lagavulin would fit your bill as well as a Laphroaig Quarter Cask. I'd love to see pictures of those in your Glencairn as well.
