I had my 16-85 zoom mechanism break under warranty. It would start to zoom out and stop around the 35mm mark. It would then be locked up. You could then take the lens and turn it upside down, off the camera, and hear something inside click. The lens would then zoom again until upright. So, try turning yours around at odd angles and see if it frees up and then locks again. Mine was under warranty, and Precision sent it back to Pentax, saying they didn't have the ability to fix it here. The repair description was vague and sounded like an issue with the barrel assembly.
