Welcome to Dreamland, Dave. Let the magic begin! Look for some closeup or macro subjects with a specular light source or highlight reflections at infinity to discover the bokeh potential of your Paxon. Keep in mind the poor flare resistance of these relics too. A hand over the lens as a hood to shield light onto the front element will often make a real difference there.

Also, if you have a bellows, you'll discover it's macro capabilities as well.

#3 is pretty cool. Your Agfa has the bokeh juice!

Yup - you're on the right track DDave. This is strictly a fantasy adventure both in technical execution and artistic expression. These lenses are not taking optics so all the inherent limitations are what challenge us to make what images we can with them. Ironically, you can't get these results easily through post processing or any modern equipment, which, in an antiestablishmentary perspective is the draw for us to explore the possibilities.

It is a marvelous contrast to the typical demands for ultimate sharpness and color we expect with all that expensive gear we own. And the gear head in us is tickled to find a use in cross-utilizing a lens that might very well be older than many of us and yet still adaptable to a creative effort that is not possible with a ready-made product at the camera store today. Jean and Marko have done well in leading the charge in this direction

I say all this in regards to the efforts being made with enlarger, photocopier and other lenses as well. The Lens Clubs feature of this forum is quite unique and offers a veritable education on optical experimentation. Once you get the bug, it's hard to shake...

Welcome to the club, Dave. Yet another never-heard-of-that one lens being put to use. Look forward to your 'better' images once you've tamed your Novomat.

After seeing these awesome images, I've got an offer cooking on eBay for one of these - looks like an older version called a Super Sestar 1.2. I've got extension tubes already so look for some new projector pix soon...

UPDATE: Looks like my offer was accepted - $40 shipped for a 4" f1.2 Singer Super Sestar projector lens coming from Alberta, Canada...

Here are a couple made with my KP-35 140/1.8 projector lens - it's a monstrous piece of glass but makes its own brand of images. No aperture, of course so its just a matter of composition and finding the DoF you can live with. Simple!

Oh, that's a keeper Marko! I imagine that is frost on your flora? Beautiful color. The projectors treat backgrounds and bokeh so differently with their large apertures and super shallow DOF. Gives this image almost an animated oil painting look - so cool.

I need to get back at it myself but am so busy with other things. I'll just keep looking for your images to come by - ha! Excellent images....

Received my 100/3.5 Meyer-Optik Goerlitz Diaplan from a seller off the German eBay site today and got to work adapting it for my Sony a65 body. So, I thought I'd show what I put together for standard (infinity) and closeup shooting. Pretty simple really.

Took a simple uncoupled extension tube set and used the shortest ring to mount to the helicoid. First step was to remove as much length as possible to create a mounting ring that would be JB Weld'ed into the helicoid body that came with the Diaplan.

Photo 1: the standard setup is made up of the milled down mounting ring, middle size ring and an M42 to Sony A adapter. With this setup I can go from 30" to infinity.

Photo 2: the longer extension tube ring is added to the standard setup to go into closeup mode from 12" to 17.5".

I get focus confirmation with the adapter to speed up composition. Pretty handy setup, easy to add/subtract the 'closeup ring', etc.

Many thanks to Marko and Duh Vinci for technical direction and images that inspired...please excuse the putrid Tab S2 pix.

Audi - what is the mm extension range on those helicoids? I've found them on eBay but could use a little direction on the range needed to make the projector lenses work. I've got a Leica Colorplan P and Meyer-Goerlitz Diaplan coming in the mail from overseas. Any details you can supply would be much appreciated!

Stunning stuff - I bought a Diaplan tonight after playing with a 105/4 Vega enlarger lens (see sample) and now discovering the projector craze. I'm officially into this whole scene...

Last year you wrote "Diaplan finally inserted into that m42 ebay focusing helicoid, perfect focusing!" What exactly did you use to get this configuration? Any particular 'extension' length?

Or should I concentrate on getting a LB Composer and going that route for shooting? Or both??

Also curious how you constructed your backgrounds to isolate the in-focus are and get the bokeh renderings. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
