I have been putting more of my recent pics in the 150-450 thread, but seeing as this thread gets WAY more traffic, and it is the 300+ club... I'll post in both. I went back to the eagles' nest this weekend, and finally had better light to shoot with. It's amazing what a little morning sun can do for the photos!

I am also in Massachusetts, insane 50 degree temperature swing the last two days. However, my new toy showed up two days ago in the form of the D FA 150-450. Hoping to get out this weekend and play even though the temps are going back down again!!

Last night's moon. Clear, crisp early winter nights certainly help with the detail. (in my experiences) K3, DA* 300 +1.4 TC

Took a few wood duck photos today. There were many to choose from, but this one was my favorite. It was the clearest, and the reflection came out great. K3+DA*300

The DA* 300 and my K3, during a portrait session. This lens is just amazing to me.

Agree, all those ideal factors happening simultaneously played a major role in achieving these results, but the results DID happen. I have major 150-450 jealousy. I do not own a K1 (i own a K3), but I'm really anxious to own one and begin the learning curve to achieving some fantastic results. I'm sure it won't happen instantly.

WOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Unreal results. I can't think of anything I've seen with the 150-450 that doesn't completely impress me. I am one more BH or Adorama sale price away from owning it!!!

These were both taken with my K3, and DA* 300. I've said it before, I'm gonna be a broken record. The clarity of this lens is amazing. I only wish my photo of the real wood duck, came out as great as the photo of the decoy! Oh well, I'll just keep trying, and having a blast doing it!

Got out for a bit today in the poke boat. This place was completely covered in lily pads. A barely noticeable beaver channel was all the allowed for some paddling. Had to push through about 75 yards of pads and mud to get close enough to get these pics. Taken with the K3, DA* 300, 1.4 TC, mounted to an OBEN tripod, and equipped with my new Induro GImbal head attachment. This single pieces of gear is absolutely helping me getting better pictures. I watched the GBH catch two fish, of course, he caught the tiniest one once I got close enough for pictures. About 30 minutes prior to my 'stalk', he caught one about 6" long.

If you're interested in a fantastic, low 'sneak' boat, GREAT for photography, duck hunting, fishing, I highly recommend looking into a Poke Boat.
I picked up a used one after years of searching and being jealous of watching the ease at which my buddy could carry, paddle and maneuver this amazing little vessel. At 28lbs, I can carry it with one hand, while carrying other equipment in the other. It is so easy to drag long distances, I can move it with ease with just one hand on a paddle while the other is at-the-ready, it tracks well. Super well-made. Incredibly safe and stable, you literally sit below the waterline. Yes, new ones are VERY EXPENSIVE!! But, if you have the means, you'll never feel like it wasn't worth the money. Or, do what I did, seek out a used one. I paid $650 for mine and it's been worth every penny. |

I've sort of experienced the opposite. If I raise my ISO too high, to gain a faster shutter speed, there seems to be a harsh sweet spot. For me, with the K3, DA* 300, and the 1.4 TC, above ISO 800 is noticeably, not incrementally, less sharp. and ISO 400 seems noticeably, not incrementally, sharper than 800. I know earlier I moaned that I've been seeing a more drastic fall off in IQ with the 300&1.4 than others seem to be able to achieve. However I did shoot this sparrow image, with that combo, and it is remarkably clear IMO. However, this sparrow was really close to me - approximately 20ft. My complaint is I want a 400+mm set up to produce images that are clear with subjects that are usually much further away than 20ft, which is why I'm so close to purchasing the 150-450 thinking/hoping/expecting it will have a vast increase in IQ over the 300+1.4. Again, I'm willing to bet a large piece of my problem is me, and my technique. I'm sure I have room to improve. Having said that, I don't think my technique or support equipment is terrible either. At least testing and trying to get better means taking more and more pictures! And that's a good thing.
