Yep! Any metal between the charging pad and the charging coil inside the phone/camera will basically turn the charging pad into an induction-heating stove top -- you'll get heat and little or no charging. The case material does not have to be glass, anything that is non-conductive and non-magnetic such as plastic will do.

I still don't see the utility of wireless charging for bigger cameras.

I generally never leave my camera sitting out on a table or shelf. It typically goes in a bag or a drawer. A bag could have a wireless charging pad inside it but then the bag would also have to include a large battery (all of which is heavier and less reliable than simply carrying a spare battery and swapping) and the bag would need a connector (replicating the hassles of wired charging). I suppose the drawer could have a charging pad but then there's the tricky bit of routing the wires to the charging pad without the wires being damaged every time I open and close the drawer.

I totally see the advantage of wireless charging for phones because they always need to be out and it does not matter if they get dusty or knocked about. And the fact that most phones don't have swappable batteries and don't last long on a charge means they absolutely need to be on the charger as much as possible. But cameras have swappable batteries, very different patterns of use (often requiring a fast swap to a fresh battery in the field), and are typically kept in a protected location when not in use.

LOL!

How about this: the device has GPS, wireless data, some clever AI, and a screen. The GPS gets your location, the wireless downloads the best image found on the internet for that location, and the AI photoshops you into the scene.

Who needs all those heavy, hard-to-clean lenses, complicated dials, finicky AF, and hours of agonizing post processing! ;)

Mechanical engineer. But I worked for a couple of years on high-energy power systems (e.g., 1,000,000 Amps at 50 Volts) so I learned enough about electronics to know whats watt. But I am still flabbergasted that tiny electrons can go through solid metal! ;)

Although the 1800 mAH of the D-LI90 seems smaller than the Google Pixel 3's battery, the Pentax battery is a two-cell design that has twice the voltage (and twice energy). Thus, the ballpark recharging time would be 160 hours which would probably take 20 to 30 fully sunny days unless the user carefully re-orients the panel toward the sun every hour of every day.

Unfortunately, it's very unlikely that phones will ever support 802.11ad because 60GHz signals are far too easily disrupted by human bodies, furniture, walls, and even a simple wooden door. The 60 Ghz band is best used by relatively immobile devices located where nothing can move between the device and the base station.

I, too, don't really see much value to these proposed features. Worse, I do not want the added weight and cost of wireless charging, added in-camera battery charging circuits, or a more expensive (and power-hungry) high-speed wifi system. I really prefer swappable batteries, a separate battery charger, and separate card reader for high-speed downloading files off the memory card.

Maybe these features could be added to an accessory grip but I hope they are not added to the body.
