here is our Guide John (John is 6'5") from our safari in Tanzania (this was photographed in the Lake Manyara National Park) and a very interesting type of acacia tree
Whistling Thorn
Common Name: Whistling Thorn, Swollen Thorn Acacia
Genus: Acacia
Species: dreparalobium
This acacia can grow about 18 feet tall, but is often stunted in its growth. The whistling thorn acacia protects itself with pairs of long thorns up to 3 inches long. Interspersed with these are modified thorns, called stipular spines, which are joined at the base by hollow bulbous swellings about 1 inch in diameter. These are home to four different kinds of stinging ants who pierce these swollen thorns with tiny holes. When the wind blows it turns old and abandoned spines into tiny whistling flutes, which gives the tree its name. . . . - Whistling Thorn - Acacia dreparalobium |

I agree with all you have said, I also like how you can see the change in terrain, from the flat plain to the escarpment in the back ground rising about 2,000 feet as well as the bird perched on top of the one tree.
for scaling purposes:
"The other two species are Grevy's zebras and mountain zebras. On average, plains zebras are smaller than the other two species of zebra. They range in height from 1-1.5 m (3.5-5 ft.) and can weigh almost 450 kg (1000 lbs.)." - Plains Zebra Facts | Common Zebras | Equus quagga
of course, I arranged the composition of all of that in advance, I learned from "Dr. Doolittle" to "talk to the animals" ;) ;) If I Could Talk To The Animals Lyrics by Dr. Doolittle - Lyrics On Demand

ok, ok, I am completely aware that this is not a photo of a tree nor of a tree's fruit but many people do think it is. I thought it was a bush but based on what I found out and posted elsewhere in this thread, it is considered to be a herb (??)
honestly if you didn't know how the scientists classify it, what would you call it, tree or bush, I never would have said herb.
I photographed it on the grounds of the Lake Duluti Serena Lodge near Arusha Tanzania
to make up for my faux pas, here are a couple of baobab trees found in the Tarangire National Park in Tanzania http://africageographic.com/blog/9-fascinating-baobab-tree-facts/http://afri...ab-tree-facts/ |

well, if someone is posting a "grass" in this thread,
(It actually is considered both depending on size and usage - if used as lumber, some sources call them trees)
branching off, (pun intended), of course, here is another misunderstood item:
The banana plant is not a tree, but the world's largest perennial herb and grows up to 25 feet, developing massive banana leaves that may extend 9 feet in the air. Edible bananas are technically berries and do not produce mature seeds. Their rhizomes, or roots, can be hundreds of years old.

going out on a limb now I'll dare to post an image which includes a rhino with perched birds as well as trees
One of the amazing things about visiting the Ngorongoro Crater in Tanzania is the varied "habitat" found in it - all teeming with wild life
You have heavily forested crater walls (I don't know if those areas are accessible or not, I do know that animals climb them.
You have on the crater floor habitats ranging from savannas, to lakes to swamp, to marsh to forest crisscrossed by hard dirt roads along with fresh water and water so heavily salted by minerals that it cannot be drunk by man or animal and which little can live in it but which does support food for certain birds.

FYI
I just saw that one of the classic sequoia trees (in a California State Park) was lost to a storm. This is one that years ago it was decided to cut a path through for the vehicles of the day and for the tourists to stand in.
would it have survived without that damage??? I think so but who knows

all photos are from the month of November of trees at the Topeka Zoological Park

As I wandered around at the Topeka Zoological Park, I noticed this tree and the leaves still on the branches.
I was drawn to the fact that you could find the leaves "a changing" from green to red to orange to brown, curling and cracking and beginning to deteriorate.
I was experimenting with the Pentax K 5 II + Tamron AF 70 - 300 mm macro zoom ld 1:2 so I decided to set it at 300 mm and set it to macro mode
here are the results

showing abuse of an tree located at the Scoville Oriental Garden in Decatur, Illinois. It would appear that at one time in the past, and for a long time, the tree was used as an "anchor" with cables hooked around it. The abuse took years and the tree grew around the cables.
