it seems from reading all of these posts
for the first time seller or one with little experience, unless the knowledge on how to do this properly is learned before, it can be quite difficult, frustrating and/or expensive
for those who get lucky with people helping at the shipping companies/post office, it might be very helpful
as one who does not intend to sell a lot [ probably less than 10 items or so life time ] I think I will continue to limit the area I would ship to
good luck to everyone else
I agree this thread should be a sticky or if anyone wants to give it try, an article

1 glad to read that I am not the only person who had a problem shipping from the US to Canada
makes me feel less stupid
2 on the issue of photographs, I notice that many people photograph serial numbers of the items
I thought it was a bad idea to put on the web the serial numbers of the items you own
am I crazier than I thought or is there a reason not to put the serial number of a lens or camera body out there for all to see?

they are not, as far as it was explained to me when I complained, they are imposed by the delivery company in Canada, in addition to any duty/import fee
which in my case because of the low value of the sale, there was duty or import fee.

I had problems shipping to Canada because of fees added by the shipping service
I did not know that would happen, the buyer didn't know, the shipper didn't tell me and the buyer was refused delivery until he paid the extra fees
if he didn't the item would have been returned to me, I would have had to swallow the fees and paid the shipping there and back before I could get the item
that is the experience that convinced me not to try to sell outside the US, the limited times I wanted to sell anything

for the uninitiated occasional seller, selling something across borders is confusing, at least for me
much easier to limit where I would ship the item to
