K-1 white dot issue. ?

I would say that is normal for Sony 36MP sensor. Especially as PS takes 4 frames and this warms up the sensor somewhat. The dots were almost all gone when my first K-1 was calibrated, twice I should add. First calibration did not get rid of dark band in the top of the image.

Full samples please. That downsampled image does not show the whole truth. Although, last image reminds me of my first k-1 body when doing PS with long exposures and high ISO.

Is yours similar to this 100% crop?

Yes, it is not known whether brand new mk2 also suffers from uncalibrated sensors. And if I got lucky there. However with KP it is not possible there is no filtering going on when doing extremely long exposures. Same sensor which is in KP just does not deliver in long exposures in competitors' offerings. They are night and day apart. KP has accelerator so 1+1 = ?

Nope sorry I have no idea about that. Just remember that new sensor for D800 did cost few hundred euros alone when I failed and slipped to river back in 2012. Based on that I could imagine 500 euro upgrade cost does not include new sensor and work hours to switch it.

Mine does not. I posted earlier some examples and they are super clean. 5-8min easily without LENR. I cannot say for sure it is the accelerator doing it but there is noticeable difference in a good way. And, if it is the accelerator, then it has other triggering mechanisms than pure ISO setting.

@Jbox

I do not have any (Pentax) digital gear anymore. I can search my archives for whatever test shots there may be from January when I received the 2nd unit. Most likely high ISO stuff related to dark frames. Maybe some lucky local shooter now has the unit as I sold it to a brick & mortar store which buys used gear.

How did your chat go? Did they admit there is an issue or still strictly unofficial business?

That is another story. Yes, the dots were mostly gone and comparable to fixed Nikon D810 (which had the same issue), however I also had that black stripe present which required 2nd calibration to get it right. My 2nd K-1 was super clean all the way up to 4-5mins @ ISO100 without any additional noise reduction when doing long exposure landscape photography. I sold all digital stuff in May and swapped to using Intrepid 4x5 camera which has remained my primary system since then. It has no noise issues :D 3 hours long exposure? No problem!

I loaded the DNG and tinkered with it for a while. It looks similar to my 1st K-1 before any calibration was done. Dots pop up after ~1EV boost and are visible all around in dark parts of the image. I would send it in for service, dunno how the process works there where you live though. You can mention that these sensor calibration fixes ARE being done in Sweden by authorized Pentax service here in Northern Europe.

Sending RAW files to them is waste of time if they do not know that 1.4 only has setting for JPG filtering. RAW files will not contain white dots, but fully saturated colored pixels where OOC JPG files contain white dots.

I have not heard anything from Ricoh Japan since they asked the dark frames from various K-1 cameras. No reply either that there are no issues though.

Hm, nothing really wrong with that. 120 seconds is a long time for any camera without NR enabled at ISO3200.

My original uncalibrated unit did this @ ISO3200

That is Pixel Shift image crop, 30 seconds exposure. Uncalibrated units are easy to spot, the dots really explode.

Unit needing calibration in service will push thousands of white dots in long exposures with out-of-camera JPG images (if all noise reduction and dot filtering options are disabled).

The White dots are not actually white. In my unit there were lots pixels which were fully saturated in red channel. OOC JPG files produced heavy dot show or Adobe converter which transformed those bright pixels into white pixels.

Hahah..well not that bad yet :D

Yes the temps rise as soon long exposure starts. It wont take many shots to get it five degrees higher than ambient temp.

+22C was a recommended indoor temp for apartments here in Finland so I picked a temp in which I have taken my test shots. And I have let my unit to rest for few hours to reach this before exposing.

Your sample had a bit different colors, maybe higher temps did it. But still it appears darker than the other samples except awscreo's unit.

This is interesting though. My unit and aikaarska's unit were bought approx. at the same time from the same dealer. My unit was unlucky one but after calibration is seems to be like aikaarska's unit. Hardly a pattern here, but awscreo's and jbox's unit produce darker result. RAWDigger also shows them to have less noise overall.

If you have time and patience, could you please take that ISO25600, 30 second, darkframe with all noise reductions disabled in-camera? Then share the RAW file with your google drive. Preferably, try to get it taken @ ~22C room temp and let camera be idle for few hours before taking the shot. Make sure that no light interferes with the camera setup in the process.

Yea, my "calibrated" unit and aikaarska's unit are almost the same but yours differs quite a lot - it is way better. I still cannot pull both shadows AND a modest +1EV boost at the same time without noisy result @ ISO100 and 30 seconds.

After using a huge amount of different Sony 36MP cameras I have now seen proof that K-1 is in the same camp - awscreo's unit rings all the bells. There is no black bar either in the file.

But there is another unknown factor in K-1 which the other cameras do not have - IBIS. I have a bad suspicion that the floating mechanism causes cooling problems with some units. Maybe there are differences how the sensor is being mounted in there (quality of installation).

Well, either your unit was running a lot cooler OR it is just way better in performance. I used exact same settings for conversion as with the previous files.

But that is somewhere what D810 performance is at similar settings. So, in line with other Sony 36MP cameras. Cannot say the same for the previous samples.

Are those dark frames?

I ask because I am away from my desktop system now but I can place your unit's output in that same square tomorrow. What temperature was it when you took those darkframes? Was the camera used heavily before taking them or idle for some time?

I have tried to gather other samples too but 22C is my target and camera must not have been used for few hours.

Have a look at this if it helps to see the differences...Same settings and conditions for all dark frames. QC is way out of line here.

The inner dark part = material from aikaarska's K-1 (never been serviced or calibrated). Now, K-1's DxO score could be much lower or perhaps even higher with another camera body if the variation is like this.

My previous D800E bodies (3 in total) and D810 (2) have given very very similar noise profile with high ISO and long exposures. My a7r1 bodies (2) were consistent as well. Not so with K-1. Now I have samples from three different K-1 bodies and output from each of them are somewhat different. In a blind test two (uncalibrated and calibrated results of my K-1) of the four samples would look like they are from different camera with different sensor. My unit's output is coarse and has slight banding all over versus the two other cases which produce smooth fine grained random noise. Something is not correct here.
