Pentax K-1 Mark II Early Reviews?

Just some thoughts since I got the mk2 on wednesday. Why should I write the same happy-happy joy-joy messages 95% of PF-members expect of a new Pentax model that have already been written? These are just digital soulless devices which deserve no more than they are worth. Every brand puts them out at steady pace.

Nah, with frozen stiff fingers and/or gloves muscle memory fails very quickly. K-1 is specialized camera for special function, mainly shooting in dramatic weather, long exposures and nightscapes. All the additional functionality (bulb timer, astrotracker, leds) and pixel-stiff scream that out loud. There are enough standard DSLR and MILC builds for ADHD street photography and AF purposes. With few enhancements K-1 would approach perfection in its genre. Few features with FW upgrade please: sensor shift bracketing and extra display gain with dropped FPS (Sony type slow shutter) to compose in darkness.

Gosh! Such lack of vision. Backlit buttons, once you use them with a Nikon, are godsend feature for night shooting. Every model lacking those should be automatically reviewed with lower score.

OVF shutter, not a huge change but a must for long exposures. Now we have some leftover plastic residue as a cap. Incredibly futile and falls off easily.

Of course it is not cheap to alter the body but the parts needed are just few $. It is completely nuts not to expect major enhancements for MK2 model. These parts cost next to nothing but would provide massive improvement in user experience.

There is no problem with a tripod. Why use such weird feature when the primary issue is basically if subject is static or not? Limited R&D resources should have been used to simple and effective enhancements like real backlit buttons. Or OVF shutter piece. Come on, it is MK2! These would have been 3$ enhancements.

Now we have a mystery chip which seems to filter image in unknown way. Not sure yet, but there seems to be hints of Sony style spatial filtering which kicks in with moderate-to-high ISO values and long exposures. This messes up tiny texture details.

It is possible that lightroom only uses the first frame. Same processing lag is still there though as if using PEF PS files from MK1. Dang, have to take few more tests with/without PS. Pity that there is no PEF support yet for mk2.

@biz: I just wanted to edit the previous post instead of making a new one.

Nope, I have no lenses with AF except 35mm macro ltd but I will not go there. I may have 77mm ltd by the end of this week or 100mm WR. But all those are screw drive so not the best ones to try out.

EDIT: Holy cows!!! Adobe has done something in silence with pixel shift files. I took DNG RAWs with MC disabled and lightroom 7.3 almost 100% fixes everything which moves. Moving cars look like mess on camera screen but almost zero issues when viewed in lightroom.

I just received my unit and smashed the shutter button a bit. It sounds a bit more "softer" than mk1 or maybe I got used to KP too much. No change in overall performance, very sluggish when writing pixel-shift files to the card. Grip is not creaking or making other strange noises yet. Articulating screen made me smile a bit after using KP for quite some time.

Ya, Dprefail is at it again. A7R3 pixler-stitch feature surprisingly got all the "ooh" and "aah" super duper -conclusions now that it was implemented in Sony (and in very bad way...)

I will focus on the Accelerator Unit -thing as my main reason to preorder MK2 was KP long exposure quality - it is way over its league and trounces most FF cameras as well. Very very interesting to see what it does with the good old 36MP workhorse. It may also have similar properties with Sony's "Star Eater" - Having a cake and eating it too?

Finland availability perhaps this week or Monday of the next one. So, freezer tests and white dot hunting incoming :O And very long exposures of course.
