K-1II review... Opportunity to get banned on DPR

How can Pentax evolve for the better if no one really dares to say something? DPR does a review version 2 which still contains AF issues, no 4K video and ... drumroll..
Smeared RAW files. So they are then wrong again. Who is there to blame then? If not Rishi then who is it?

If Pentax listens to their most faithful userbase more than critical reviews, they will have Safox 13 and fullHD in 2028. They seem to be non-issues (and yet every week there is a whine thread about them).

Same stands for non-existent support for weather related issues. Whether it is wrong type of rain or -20C, everything works as*-designed and dumb user is always to blame. Just wait when your own dog bites you once...

If something is trolling it is marketing for features which no one backs up when the *peep* hits the fan. Screw temperature limits when the absolutely best light starts at -20C and colder conditions. -10C is only "warmup" phase.

Every device which fails there gets the hose no matter what brand. So far the first to fail has been the most active weather resistance PR firm.

Mind you, Samsung cellphone also works when wrapped up in an Otterbox.

Nah, as badly engineered they are, R2 survived this and let me expose pictures:

While KP which I used this January in similar conditions failed to release the shutter in few hours time and I had to revert to battery grip shutter release. Pentax in all its WR glory has failed on me more than Sony  K-1 had other problems like freezing articular screen and stuck IBIS (sensor shift).

Oh gosh...how many of you are really shooting Olympic games for an agency with a Pentax? You need either super fast WLAN of LAN on-site to get the stuff to a hub which handles all the traffic forward. Before that you need to actually capture the sportsman doing their stuff. Good luck.

Yeah, there are timeframes in which material must be loaded to (photo) agency servers. There is no time to waste by processing the images for an art exhibition. Raise your hands if you are working against such limits with a Pentax :O

Japanese style of innovation does not allow admitting design mistakes. Fuji have taken different approach lately. Sony is good example, providing uncompressed RAW took 2 years and even then it was half-assed solution which cannot do lossless compressed. Instead Sony gives 16-bit container and every uncomp RAW from 42MP cameras take whopping 90MB of storage!

Well, in my point of view it is. But it is my view and apparently no one else will ever meet the exact conditions to see documented issues :O My only wish when buying mk2 was to get device as good as mk1. So far, long exposures are the definite positive and limited ISO range between 100 and 400 the negative. I have not seen or had the possibility to try photograph some starry skies with mk2.

My observations have come to conclusion that not many are satisfied with mk2 as it is. People are afraid to speak of it. This is seen in hostility and doubt against all reports focusing on the accelerator unit, need to defend every last bit of "enhancement" of pre-war Safox AF unit and weird half-*peep* semi-PS routine which takes 20 seconds to write an image to a card implifying lack of processing power.

Technical IQ analysis by bclaff already proved that even with the accelerator one cannot boost the old horse to beat the fresh one. Not impressive result. It might be if Ricoh had the 42MP chip and managed to beat Sony in their own race.

What comes to Adobe and Pentax...

1) It still gives superb details out of any alternative with non-MC PS file
2) How can Adobe suddenly work out some propellerhead RAW (PS) which contains god-knows what? Ricoh needs to be the active player should support come in time. True, MK2 does not seem so hard provided that simple EXIF hack lets one work PEF. Unless, some workaround is needed because accelerator unit requires such.

Correct result of that DPR review should be something like 50/100 and copper award. Even Sony managed to improve their mk2 and mk3 models in huge steps in 2 years of time even if they seldom realize what functions a camera should have. Gosh, it took them 3 generations before they realized that an electronic device requires power to operate.

Ricoh is fighting multiformat war and lacking resources to back it up. How long does it take to get one 50mm lens to shops? Nikon just had to do something to change tactics.

@photoptimist:

Yes I will never use blur filter if camera has option for such. So all AA always disabled. That pixel-shift PEF I shared does not have bayer-problems and still suffers from noise reduction effects. I can try changing the ISO with Exiftool, or anyone can now.

You do realize what I meant with that poisoning? World is not turning around Ricoh/Pentax and probably will not do so in the future. Why lose sleep over DPR article if you know it contains pure herecy? It seems to me it hit the nail to the head reading this topic.

Camera is just a lifeless tool to me. I repaired my primary camera with duct tape and glue last summer. It is made of wood and floats in the water. It has many failings and cannot be operated in the dusk or at night. It does not produce tack sharp image which is my requirement for digital device. It is only right that all devices violating the only holy grail of digital imaging get a severe beating. Period.

Would you please tell me what camera settings were wrong? RAW developer on the other hand...if modern digital camera does not work with Adobe camera RAW or there is lack of understanding from manufacturer to get the support done in time, the whole system becomes dead fish in the water. One gets in bad position with Adobe, one vanishes from the market. Alternative options plain suck in user experience these days or fail to produce understandable archival solutions. Third option are products like Luminar which try to produce maximum bling-blong effects for social media like hunting (fail).

Whole digital camera thing is going straight to hell. More and more automation and soon camera suggests composition based on 100 000 other pics from the same scene. Photography does not exist anymore in digital domain in few decades. So better get ready to return to the roots.

Nikon has lossless compressed which can be turned on and size shrinks to PEF RAW size. Uncompressed 14bit NEF gives that large file.

That is quite weird, if DNG has process version tag it means it was processed and saved again as DNG. OOC DNG RAW EXIF from K-1 does not have any process version -tags. I can take a TIFF anytime and add postprocessing to the file and save it again as DNG if I want. What a mess.

Yes and no. Jim Kasson has done complete analysis of how Sony nr works. It activates after 3.2 seconds no matter if nr is disabled or not. Before that the files are good to go. Using compressed RAW has another kind of issues but not NR related.

Using Exiftool to switch camera model to K-1 (mk1) instead of MK2 enables all mk1 profiles in Lightroom. Yes, some contain aggressive curves. But it is in user's best interest to export flat material to Photoshop (or any other editor) should it be used later on to handle the processing.

Sony applies NR in all images with exposure times greater than 3.2 seconds. End result destroys minimal details such as sand grains or single pixel stars.

Yes, chroma noise. Not luminance which is not unpleasant. Film scans and prints with minor grain are always more pleasant to look at than polished, digital, "plastic" surfaces.

Rondec, I already have 4x5" as my main system and 8x10" coming when Intrepid works their queue. K-1 is just for dusk/night when I cannot see anything on groundglass anymore.

I do not understand why someone should have a relationship with a brand producing cold lifeless electric gadgets. After all those are not considered human beings, yet...

Oh dude, I did this with a7 mk1 back in 2013 which eventually ended up in having uncompressed RAW for a7mk2 cameras. My star trails artifact example was part of RawDigger software help :) It is quite easy to see where RAW files are mangled. Have a look at your cellphone images at pixel level and you will find similarities both in Sony's spatial filtering and K-1 mk2 filtering. Sure, not in similar magnitude but they are there. In proper RAW file detail is detail, not mush. My next finding will discuss how to spot filtering in long exposures with pretty nasty examples of screwing up smooth tonal transitions.
