Congrats on a beautiful shot. I am fond of the pano capability of Lightroom CC. To me, it's almost worth the subscription price for this amazing stitching function. (Which keeps getting better with new releases.)

To that end, I'm curious as to why you would move from processing in Lightroom to stitching in PS? I have not stitched in PS, never feeling the need to move beyond the options offered in LR… What does PS offer you that LR does not?

Thanks!

Beautiful, dramatic image! Since it was already shot dark, I wonder what would happen with a burned\darker foreground? Might that add to the drama (contrasting with the beautiful, bright peak)?

This might be a striking b/w as well.

In any case, it's gonna look great on your wall!

Striking image. Inviting composition with the road drawing us in. Ethereal feeling. Nicely done!

Ha! Isn't that the truth?! And the challenge today! Take a great capture and everyone thinks you "made a great Photoshop"! UGH.

I never open Photoshop. I have it as part of my Adobe Photographers CC subscription but as a matter of principle (so far), I want to be able to say, "Never touch the stuff."

Color me old school.

While I surely get the appeal of two butterflies in the shot -- and they are nicely placed on a diagonal -- the second photo is much stronger. The first, to my eye, has multiple challenges. As wpresto notes, there is a fair amount of distance between the two butterflies in the shot. That makes everything between them of interest.

Unfortunately, the foliage and flora in that negative space is not evenly distributed through the visual field; neither is it distinctly in or out of focus.

Though I own this 100 macro lens and generally favor its out of focus treatment, I'd describe the bokeh in this shot as jittery. To my eye, it's just not the most pleasing out of focus rendering of which this lens is capable. I'd attribute that to a combination of f-stop, subject matter, and harsh direct lighting.

In addition, as mattb123 notes, there is that terribly distracting lightly colored background element drawing the eye in the lower left. It looks industrial \ man-made -- antithetical to the 'butterfly garden' motif.

Well, that's probably more evaluation than you wanted. But those are the thoughts that ran through my mind as I gazed on the photo!

Most importantly, my hat is off to you, Eric, for shooting such a great photo of a butterfly with that lens. I know those buggers are darned elusive creatures to track under the best of circumstances (so erratic in their patterns), and that lens doesn't auto-focus worth a darned, so it's manual focus all the time (for me). So that second shot of yours gets a hearty thumbs up from me! Very nice indeed.

Fabulous image, k-amps. Thanks for sharing your pre-processed Raw. By doing so, you remind me once again of the import and advantage of exposing for the highlights! (My Olympus OM-D EM-1 did not have a highlights warning in the focusing preview which made this more challenging...)

The dynamic range and the IBIS demonstrated by this one photo, are impressive indeed. Well done, and thanks again for posting the before and after here.

The rain and snow are welcome to replenish the water table and reservoirs. Wild swings in California weather are part of the long-term climate here.

The Pacific coast has been receiving waves of storms, rain and snow, over the past several days.

Yesterday, as yet another series of squalls and storms rolled in from the West, I went to meet the front. I stumbled onto a beach I'd not been to before. I found a spontaneous waterfall from the runoff of the rainwater from the cliffs and higher ground adjacent to the beach.

This is a cropped four-photo pano shot with a 15-30 zoom.

It's been raining some in Northern California. And more is expected this weekend. That means two things. The drought-parched reservoirs are being replenished.(Yay!) And fungi are growing in the local redwood forests!

I took my new K-1 and FA 100 2.8 WR Macro to record the mycological event... [ I am brand spanking new to macro. But had a blast. All manual focus. Light was too low for auto focus. ]

A wider perspective from the Pentax D-FA 15-30...

I am lugging a full K-1 kit -- zooms, the 100 macro, and tripod in a Lowepro backpack and finding it all a joy to work with.

Spent all day in the rain the other day to capture some of those fungi shots. Didn't worry a whit about the gear. Loved it!

Meg4mi, great set! I find photos 1 & 3 particularly striking. The perspective and colors are beautiful. Were they mine, one of them would find its way into my portfolio (and onto my wall) for sure!

Frederic,

A brief note of appreciation for the photos you routinely share. And the manner in which you do it.

I am grateful not only for your photographic sensibilities (in the natural world and in the portraits of your lovely model), but also the painstaking care you give to listing the lens data for each picture. This is very helpful information.

You are in a distinguished club of considerate shooters that I hope will inspire others here by your example.

Stunning shot! Beautiful light. So well framed. And is that graffiti on the rock in the left mid-ground!?!

Is that your daughter? Nice of her to pose for you. Looks like she has been going to the same class that my wife and I have been frequenting here in Northern California: Levitating Yoga. All the rage.

I can't seem to hold that splits pose for more than a few seconds. Just too painful!

Nice shot, by the way.

The photo of Icicle Creek is gorgeous. The color of light on the water and rocks is quite captivating! Beautiful.

And a note of gratitude to you and others here who utilize the "View Picture EXIF" function.

Santa delivers my K-1 in two weeks. So I've not yet had the pleasure of posting any photos here.

I don't know the mechanics of posting on the Forum but am watching the EXIF info whenever I can to work my Shopping List for lenses! I am an incurable EXIF snooper. I find it very instructive to my photography education. :-)

Cheers.

I second this! The photo exudes a distinctly classic vibe. The dark clothing signals retro. The woman is reminiscent of Golda Meier. The haircut and glasses on the gentleman could be from the '60s.

And the processing is simply beautiful.

A very evocative environmental portrait, well executed.
