If you just want 500mm (and fast enough that you can easily use your 1.4x converter) then have you thought about an old 500mm f4.5 Pentax lens (either K or as a takumar with a screw mount adapter). I've seen some lovely sharp photos and they go for good prices at KEH (in USA though, not sure about australian availability, probably as bad as UK).
Pros; f4.5, pretty fast for 500mm!
Very sharp
Good value
Cons; weighs an absolute ton
will probably have to spend some additional money on a tripod system (absolutely no way you can hand hold it).
Might need to add an extension tube for close focusing.
I do think this would be the perfect lens for hide photography on a budget though. Stick it on a nice big bean bag and shoot away! But for walk around grab shots it is not the lens to have. So it depends on what you want to shoot.
