I had a roll of XP2 Super sitting in my Voigtlander Bessa RF for a few years, so I thought I had better test it when I went to Whitby last month. Unsure of whether the camera had any light leaks or other issues I sent the film to Harman Lab for processing and some low res. scans. I got the scans back today and the results puzzle me. The weather was really atrocious so that may explain the murky nature of the images, but I do not understand the straight pale white line going down each image. The first image is a vertical one the second horizontal. If the lines were due to a camera fault the lines would be across the image in one and down the image in another. Any ideas anyone? I will have a better idea when I get the negs. back of course. |

Playing with a new copy stand. Boy, do I wish I had bought one years ago! Anyway the pictures:-
From Rome January 2017. Fujica ST601n and Voigtlander 40mm f2 SL Ultron.
and May 2016, Waterfall near Prestatyn. N. Wales. Shot on Voigtlander Bessa 1, 105mm Vaskar lens and Fuji Provia.
I have played around and added texture by putting grease proof paper behind the fiim, plus of course a B&W conversion also.
Finally a shot with a Yashica 124G and Ektar. The colours were horrible on copying so I've texturized and converted to mono as above, this time with tissue paper. |

I have an in-built suspicion about converting colour film to B&W, but your shot demonstrates that this is not based on any empirical evidence. Once my stock of XP2 is gone I will make an effort to shoot colour film more and convert to B&W in post. I will then see if there is any need to continue to buy B&W film. If there is not it will certainly make my photography logistics a lot more convenient!

Are my eyes deceiving me, or is the middle of Tasmania permanently frosted, as it appears in your wonderful photos?

Finally got the first test roll of XP2 Super processed and scanned from the fairly recently acquired Olympus 35 SP. Due to two factors, much of the roll was very poor:-
1. My SP seems to have very unreliable exposure metering. I will not be relying on the camera's inbuilt meter any more!
2. The SP has a very long shutter release. If one is not used to it, camera shake is almost inevitable. Even the addition of a soft release button fails to fully cure the issue, but with practice I think it will be manageable.
I still prefer my 35 RC over the SP, so I may have to move the SP on. A few more rolls will decide me. ---------- Post added 06-27-22 at 03:53 AM ---------- A few from my recent road trip about England and Wales. I had not used my Trip for a few years so I took it with me, not expecting to use it much but..... |

Nice in B&W. I bet it would look good in colour too on a drizzly or misty day.

I keep promising myself to use various old film cameras which lack a meter. I am usually pretty decent at estimating exposure, but I do like a bit of confirmation especially now film has got a lot more expensive. I do not want to always carry a separate meter around. So, I have found a Johnson Exposure Calculator, which will easily fit into a wallet, complete with original instructions and packaging for just £11. Initial experiments suggest it's actually pretty accurate (if slow!). I have no excuse not to use them now. |

I agree, it does feel like cheating. However, I have done it more than once. Usually as I normally only have one film camera when on holiday, and if it is loaded with colour film and I want a B&W shot, needs must. I think though we are being a bit irrational in viewing it as cheating. I think it should be considered a legitimate technique these days, but I just can't shake the feeling it's all a bit off.
