What they were saying (the ubiquitous "they") back when I got my Spotmatic (back in the 1970s, not to admit my real age) was that the original Spotmatic was indeed to have a spot meter, but for some technical reason they could not get it just right and used the name with the camera anyway.

I've actually been turning down far more than I've been taking lately, but here are two I could not say NO to. On the left is a thrift shop find (black MX) by a very alert co-worker, and on the right is a hand-me-down Mamiya-Sekor DTL 1000 in IMMACULATE condition.

I actually have two of them, one chrome and one black. Both are very good performers. If you go to my gallery below and click on the GIII tag you can see some shots.
I recalibrated the chrome one to meter properly with the now hard to find ISO 1600 film.
Kind of ironic that I'm posting about Canon on the Pentax forum and Pentax on the Canon Forum. :)
