Is Pentax in the need of a M/L system?

If the Pentax K mount adapter supports open aperture metering and autofocus for lenses with builtin focus motors, it will be a good thing. Without that, there will indeed be no point to it.

Me thinks that mirrorless is becoming the next big thing and that Ricoh is sitting it out at its own peril. :(

I will still take it. I can get by without a viewfinder. ;)

Really. On my Samsung NX1, I use the rear screen about 90% of the time. And my Samsung NX100 works fine without one.

It has just occurred to me that being late to the party is a bit of a Pentax tradition. In some cases there there was a heroic or other type of failure that preceded eventual success. Here are a few such things that I can think of:
  • The K mount was introduced long after others such as Nikon had bayonet mounts

  • The LX was introduced long after the Nikon F/F2 and Canon F1/F1n. It did beat the F3 by about a year. The MX was available but it did not have any automated exposure and the 1/1000 shutter speed was very 1960's at the time.

  • Autofocus came about quite a while after Minolta showed the way. The MEF was one of the first but one body and one lens does not make a system.

  • Digital SLRs was also not exactly the first on the block. There was the abortive experiment with the dreadful Phillips sensor.

  • The K-1 only came about years after Canon and Nikon showed the full frame way.

Don't even get me started on the K-3 II replacement and the confusion over the position of the KP in the lineup.

Please mister Pentax, can we have a mirrorless for Christmas? Just put a K mount on the Ricoh GRIII. We will be happy with that. It might turn out a bit weird in the looks department, but we won't complain. Not much, anyway.
