A professional can certainly ignore the cost if he is able to make money from a lens, i.e. there is a good business case for it. If the numbers don't work, a pro would be unlikely to splash out on gear.
An amateur would be reluctant to go big on the grounds of affordability. Ask me, the only new in box items I bought in more than a decade were
- Sigma 10-20mm f/3.5
- Sigma 70-300mm f/4-5.6 lens
- Pentax K10D with 18-55mm kit lens
Life got in the way of anything more than that. These days, I have to do my GAS thing on the used market. Well-heeled amateurs might be able to buy things just because they can, but most of us can not.
