Personal preference for particular ergonomics I guess. What you say about the size of film bodies is true, people obviously managed to use them just fine. But that doesn't mean that the ergonomics couldn't necessarily be better, again at least for some people.
I have both a K-1 and a KP. There's no question that the K-1 feels better to hold for me for a longer longer period of time, despite being heavier.
I do have big hands, so maybe that's part of it.
Plus having a larger grip means space for a bigger battery. That would mean not only more shots for the KP, but I could use the same batteries in both cameras.

I'd sell my KP in a second for a new model that had the KP's quality, but a bigger body, with bigger buffer, battery, and more focus points. And I have found the 150-450 to be a great lens, pretty fast, and it would pair well with such a body.
And such a body would probably better at that price point than anything that Canon or Nikon have.
But Canon and Nikon have way more lens options in the long telephoto range that is needed for sports and wildlife. Not sure how Pentax overcomes that without a huge investment.

I wouldn't say that Ricoh/Pentax benefits in no way from the used market. An APS-C Pentax user that picks up a used K-1 may buy new FF lenses.
And a non-Pentax user that buys a used APS-C or K-1 can buy new lenses.

Are you saying, too much magic bus?

Seems as though I've heard that before.
