We had some thunderstorms come through a week or so ago and so I decided to shoot some lightning.

These are from the Pentax K-1 and Pentax 15-30 zoom lens. I used the Strike finder 2 to trigger the shutter.

Thank you. I used a variety of lenses for this event. These are the lenses I used:
  • D FA 28-105 WR

  • FA-J 18-35 (I really wish Pentax would make a new constant aperture version of this lens with modern coatings or even a 17-40 f/4 to compete with Canon),

  • FA 50mm f/2.8 Macro (which IMO has better focus behavior than my FA 50 1.7)

  • D FA 100mm f/2.8 Macro WR

Thanks. It was my 3rd or 4th time doing the photographer's night there. This time I had the best glass I could have, and much more experience shooting and processing, and my keep rate was still only about 10%. Shooting through thick acrylic (some of it curved) in dim light is tough.

A few of of my favorite shots from the Aquarium of the Pacific's Photographer's night.

Pentax K-1 and various lenses

I was the only Pentax shooter there. Tamron had a few Pentax Lenses to loan out, but most were for crop sensor. The only FF lenses were a 90mm Macro and a 28-300 (I already have this lens and The Pentax 100mm WR f/2.8 Macro).

Just a quick and dity composite from yesterday's SpaceX launch from Vandenberg AFB. I took one shot every three seconds and layered them in PS. I have more work to do on it, but I'm happy with this camera.

Thanks. The camera is incredible, and I am surprised how well the older glass did it justice. A bit soft, and once I switched to AF-S & center spot for AF, focus was much better. ISO 6400 allowed me to up the shutter speed and get better captures.

I have to unlearn my fear of high ISO that I have acquired from 10+ years of shooting Canon APC-S cameras. 6400 on the K-1 has less noise than ISO 800 on my 70d.

I took the K-1 and my FA 100-300 out to the old ballgame. It did pretty well.

Some of these were @ ISO 6400 the Noise was well controlled.

Here are two PS images from a meetup in Laguna Beach last night

The Blue Laguna

La Luna

One thing I noticed on the moon shot in particular are the green artifacts. as the shutter speed was 1/80th of a sec, I have trouble believing that they were caused by the moon moving in that time.I suspect possible tripod vibration. Any other ideas what can cause that?

I'm now hyped to hook the K1 up to my 5" APO telescope and see what kind of images I can get through that.

I went to Vasquez Rocks and the California Poppy Reserve this past weekend to see what the K-1 can do.

Here's a couple of images I processed in LR.

I went to Griffith observatory last night to try out the K-1. I have to say I'm impressed. These 2 shots of Downtown L.A. we almost the same. The first is a standard shot the second is a pixel shift version
ISO 6400 105mm
Non Pixelshift 1.3sec @ f/11
PixelShift 2.Sec @ f/14
Processed identically in Lightroom.
