Nah, I haven’t sprung for an LX (nice though they are.). My black Pentax is a original Spotmatic SP.*

* well technically, my plastic pentaxes are black—MZ-S and PZ-1p. And my Pentax 67 is black but those don’t count because either chrome wasn’t available or it was a rare plastic chrome look which doesn’t really look chrome.

All my Nikons are black and all (but one) of my Pentax’s are chrome. It makes it easier to find a camera when I want to shoot it.

Yeah, I have instructions. It looks a bit more complicated than some of the other lenses, but I’ll give it a try once I get back. I did shoot a couple of test rolls around St. Petersburg with the Jupiter-8, Jupiter-12, and Helios-104. One thing I liked about the Helios was the aperture had click stops. The lenses without click stops have a tendency to drift while I’m walking around with the camera.

About $250 for all of this. The camera included a full rebuild (the video of the vortex done by “gentle hands” is even posted on YouTube. (Though he’s speaking Russian throughout, so I don’t know what he said.)

The lenses across are Jupiter 9 (85/2), Helios-103 (53/1.8), Jupiter-8 (50/2), Jupiter-12 (35/2.8). The left viewfinder is for the 85, and the right viewfinder does 28, 35, 50, 85, and 135.

The Jupiter-9 (technically ЮПИТЕР-9) has really stiff focusing, but that seems to be all of them that haven’t been restored. There are instructions online to clean and relive the focusing.

The shop also had a 135mm Jupiter 11 lens, but it wasn’t in the best of shape. I may break down and buy it to complete the set. (Well the 28mm would be needed too, but that seems to sell for pretty high. There was also the 50/1.5 but I couldn’t justify the cost on that either.)

yeah, I'm looking for fair prices, not necessarily steals. the 50/1.5 is expensive everywhere and the 85/2 is a bit pricy, so I'll probably pass on those. But if the other prices are current, they undercut ebay or Fedka a bit. I have a Kiev IIa with Jupiter 8 getting CLA'd for me by a guy in Novgorod, and I'll pick it up in Moscow for 6500 rubles ($100). The guy in Moscow playing middleman has been incredibly helpful, so I'll probably 'tip' him since he hasn't asked to make any money on the deal. I'll look at some other cameras, but I definitely want to get a couple other lenses for the Kiev in St. Petersburg. I expect I'll make it home with two or three cameras and some lenses and other misc odds and ends.

For those of you with Kiev cameras--a quick question I haven't seen spelled out anywhere--does the viewfinder have brightlines, or is the extent of the view in line with the 50mm?

I’m hoping to find one for my Kiev when I pick it up in a couple weeks. I dont know how current their website is, but this place in St. Petersburg seems to have one:

???????????? ?????????????

I’ll be getting a 50/2 Jupiter 8, and I’m hoping to find a 35 (Jupiter 12) and something long—preferably an 85 (Jupiter 9), but for price I may have to get a 135.(Jupiter 11)

I've heard that this is an issue with earlier FEDs--mainly the prewar and the "NKVD" models, but not so much with later modes. They also had an issue with not really being metric. I'm heading to Russia in a month, and my goal is to come back with a Kiev (IIa preferably) and a FED--probably a FED-2, but if I find a very early model, I might snag it. My goal is to get actual working shooters, not shelf queens, and the FED-2 looks more useful than an early FED.

I'm not sure what mounting it on one type of body vs another would change, unless the ltm version doesn't correctly account for the flange distance difference or the rangefinder cam.

No photo to post, but I just got a PZ-1p from forum member aaacb. It’s going to be a companion/backup to my MZ-S. I’m still trying it out, but so far I like the interface on the MZ-S more, the grip on the PZ-1p is fatter, which is less comfortable to hold. Nonetheless, it is a very capable camera. I worry a bit about the mirror gear and the MZ-S, so for now, the PZ-1p will be the backup.

I very quickly shot and developed my first roll, and it looks good (not the compositions, they were done quickly for testing.). The interesting thing is exposure looks pretty darn good, and I used a 1.5v silver battery for the meter. Before I developed, sunny 16 and the meter matched exactly, so I suspect the meter was already adjusted for 1.5v.

The focusing screen is a little dim and has no focusing aids, so if I like it otherwise I may replace the screen. There are $20 cheap Chinese screens on eBay or a nice $80 screen from Rick Oleson with my choice of lines scribed on it.

New toy. I don't know if I'll like the TLR experience, but I want to try it, and this was way, way cheaper than a Rollei.

It was funny trying to find the stuff. The Ascorbic acid was the hardest to find, until I found a "Nature's Grocery" or some such store. They had a huge section of supplements and powders. It was also the most expensive at about $14. The washing soda was at the Family Dollar store for a couple of bucks. Some of the recipes call for potassium bromide that I don't think I can find locally. Its main use seems to be an anti convulsant for dogs. I have a roll ready and waiting to develop this weekend.

Thanks I have a 35/3.5 on the way and a 105/2.8 from a user here. Unfortunately the Spotmatic has a fatal flaw. The film advance slips when there is a little drag. My test roll was filled with overlapping and double frames. It will probably be heading out for repair soon. The SV so far seems less problematic assuming I can accurately guess exposure.

I’ll probably look for a 35 f-something, I prefer 35 to 28. I’ll also look for a short tele like 85 or 100.

That’s kind of awesome.

I capture EXIF for almost all of my film shots (camera, lens, film, iso, aperture, shutter speed, and geotag) using my phone. The app is less than perfect though, so I’m considering writing my own

yeah, Ilford has SFX and rollei has an infrared film as well, but they all roll off by 800nm, whereas HIE has sensitivity to over 900nm.

I ended up with a Cokin P filter holder with IR filter (effectively R72 or 89B) and a 49 and 52 ring. Total cost was about $50. Since the film is unobtanium, I’m holding off shooting until I have a plan.

yikes, that a lot! Fortunately, Kodak's datasheet on HIE gives some suggested ISOs for different filter types. I think the filter I'm going to end up with is an 89B, which is not pure IR, as it lets a little red through. Kodak suggests metering at ISO 50 for an 89B or ISO 25 for a 87 and ISO 10 for a 87C. Nonetheless, nothing or almost nothing will be visible through the viewfinder (if I'm shooting an SLR.) So a tripod will be necessary: mount the camera, frame the shot, focus, adjust focus with the infrared focusing mark on the lens, meter, set shutter/aperture, attach filter, take the picture (or bracket my shots).

The other odd thing is the warning to load and unload film from the camera in a darkroom. (there is someone on ebay selling a roll of HIE in an old metal film canister. The canister clearly states to open in a darkroom, but of course the seller took the film out for the photo...)

I think he sold all 40 rolls of HIE in a couple hours.

I'd love to try Aerochrome as well. Both films seem to require a bit more planning and research, rather than just setting the ISO and shooting. I'll have to use the infrared mark on my lenses for the first time! Metering HIE seems the biggest challenge.

I figure since I got serious about film pretty late there are some things, like Kodachrome, that I’m just never going to get a chance to experience, sadly. Another film I wrote off was Kodak HIE infrared film. The only times I’d seen it for sale it was very expensive, with questionable history and storage, and usually just a roll or two.

Well, a seller showed up on Photrio with 40 rolls of 35mm, stored frozen in lead lined bags. Expiration was 2008 so relatively new. Price was high but not outrageous at $15 a roll. So I now have 8 rolls on the way to me. Hopefully USPS doesn’t x-ray it. I don’t have any lead bags, I don’t know how important that is. I need to order a couple of R72 filters. I figure a 49mm for my Pentax lenses and a 52mm for my Nikon lenses (and the K55/1.8 I have.)

I’m really looking forward to this. If you have any suggestions on shooting HIE, I’d love to hear them.
