I love my MZ-S. It’s my favorite of my “automatic” cameras. It’s fairly compact, feels nice in the hand, and can be shot like a manual camera (aperture ring and shutter dial). It’s permanently in “hyper program” mode, which Pentax came up with on previous cameras. That means that it defaults to program, but then adjusting a setting takes it off automatic. It works mostly seamlessly meaning you don’t need to choose a mode—PSAM, just adjust the shutter if you want manual shutter, dial the aperture off of A if you want manual aperture. It works quite well.

I find one very useful function of bulk loader and ultra cheap Ultrafine film in 100ft rolls, is I can easily build short test rolls of 10-12 exposures to run quick tests to check the shutter and lens. Of course that requires you develop at home, but that’s easy enough too. I recently bought a cheap Minolta X-700 locally with a 50/1.7. First thing I did is load up a test roll and develop it, whereupon I discovered that on the top shutter speed the right half of the image is unexposed (leading shutter dragging, I assume.)

No doubt, but some people (i.e. me) will pay less because they know they’re going to have to fork out some cash to get it working. It’s like lens caps. A lack of caps is worth $10-20 off the top of the price of a lens. On the other hand, when I buy pre-AI lenses, I try to find ones that have been factory converted to AI. There are still some places that have the conversion kits available, but usually only for oddball lenses.

(It’s interesting that Nikon people like to brag that they’re using the same mount since 1959, when the AI/pre-AI divide in the mid 70s creates more significant lens compatibility issues than the m42 to K migration.)

My AF lenses have dimples on the aperture ring where you tap the screw holes to add the bunny ears.

go for it, but if you lose them, it may make it harder to sell. I have both AI and non-AI cameras, so I make sure mine have them (except on occasion when I buy a series E lens or a AF lens.)

The main reason I like my FTN is (and I know this is shallow) it doesn't have a flash shoe. I never use flash, and pentaprisms look so beautiful without a shoe interrupting the lines. My SV may be one of the best looking cameras ever.

I take it, its a FT3? I've had a FTN for about 25 years. Its been modified for 1.5v batteries. I pulled it out of a draw 6 months ago, and it worked perfectly. Even the 20 year old battery was still good. They'll run forever.

I’d love to try an Olympus OM, but I can’t bring myself to get into another mount. I already have Pentax K, M42, Nikon F, Pentax 67, and Bronica E. I’ll probably be getting a Minolta SR hand-me-down from my dad soon as well.

buy cheap film and develop it yourself. There are some up-front costs like the development tanks and a way to scan, but once you're past that you can shoot and develop a roll of film for US$5-6. Its also more fun because if you wait until you go someplace worth shooting, you probably haven't worked the kinks out of your cameras, and really learned to use them.

This past summer I went on a trip through Colorado, Utah, and Wyoming. I took a chance and only took a film camera, and shot ~13 rolls (medium format 6x4.5, so 15 shots per roll.) The B&W came out great, the color negative came out insanely great, but the color slide was under exposed (salvageable after scanning). I realized afterwards that I hadn't shot more than two rolls of slide film before the trip, and I had done it with the SuperProgram and its TTL auto exposure, but the camera I took didn't have metering and I was using a handheld incident meter. I should have practiced with that camera and meter with slide film more before the trip.

cool. do you have one? How rigid are the adjustments? I've been idly considering getting a 4x5 but not that seriously yet, but the intrepid is on my list. It's about US$285 shipped to the US.

I was looking at those the other day--basically plywood large format. Of course the reason they can do that is there isn't much to large format camera body--most of it is in the lens.

Well, everyone is different, but I found the digital process was sucking the life from my creativity. I started trying film again a year ago with a modest SuperProgram and an A28/2.8 about a year ago. I loved the process so much that I haven't shot digital since. I develop at home, and have an enlarger at home and love everything about it. And all my cameras and all my film (including unshot rolls) and everything else is probably right around the cost of a K1ii body and kit lens.

I have a Omega D2 and a D3. The D2 is getting setup as my enlarger, since the D3 is autofocus, and I don't want to deal with that at all. Fortunately, the D3 has a color head which I'm stealing off it for the D2. I doubt I'll ever shoot larger than a 4x5 if for no other reason than there is no way I could fit a larger enlarger in my dark room. I have 5 lenses that should cover most of what I might shoot (2x50 for 35mm, 75 for 6x4.5, 105 for 6x7, 150 for 4x5)

Medium format folder or the recent 35mm rangefinders?

I have little desire to expand the systems I own, but the two things that appeal to me are a 6xX folder (would love a late model Fuji GF) or a well made rangefinder like the Nikon S or the Bessarabia R2 (I’d mention Leica, but one lens for that would cost more than all my other camera equipment combined.)

I have too many for my preference, a total of 5 functional cameras. Pentax 67, Pentax SuperProgram, Bronica ETRSi, Nikon F4, Nikkormat FTN. I’m tempted to ditch the Nikons and limit it to the two Pentax cameras and the Bronica. I’m fine stockpiling lenses, but I don’t like stockpiling cameras. (7 A lenses for the SP, 7 lenses for the 67, and 7 lenses for the Bronica.)

There are a couple others that I don’t count. I bought another Bronica to get the focusing screen out of it. I have a Pentax SF10 somewhere that I bought to get the attached lens, but have no interest or desire in the camera.
