jg - thx!
BTW, I'm gonna hold off on the DA15 or DA21. I'm going to try the 18-55 kit lens whenever I want something compact or use the Sigma 24 more.

Fast forward in time....
Venice again, but this time - Venice, CA USA
Bench under 2 Giants-
2 Beggars -
This one was taken from the hip. I was walking and noticed the 2 dogs begging for scraps and how the light reflection from a store window highlighted them. I didn't even put my k200d to my eye - I just aimed and hoped for a shot. After crossing the street (you can see the stop light in the corner) I cheated and "chimped" and was happy to see the shot. This shot could probably use some cropping and postprocessing but I'm just too lazy :o
Caffeine Queue-
Taken while drinking my cup of "Black Cat" cappucinno. Cup to the right is not mine but the person next to me. |

Figured out what I wasn't doing in order to post the pictures..... I was forgetting to use "copy image location".
Some photos a took sometime ago to remind me of a vacation:
La Guardia - Milan, or was it Verona?
Gondola Laundry - definitely not Vegas
A lb of flesh. Taken at the Venice Fish Market
Are you kidding me? Milan |

Ok. No more questions. Looked through some old shots and found some from waaay back from a trip to Venice, this time in Italy - not California. My apologies as these were not taken with a Pentax but with a Canon SD700:
Edit: See post #2221 where I figured out how to post flickr images.
Why aren't my pictures showing up?

Javier-
Thanks for the invite. Would love to someday get together and do a "shootout"
Douglas of Sweden-
Great to hear the backstory on how the shots were taken. Sort of like the special features on a DVD!
I went on a trip to San Francisco over the holidays. I decided to travel light and in so doing I decided to leave the 16-45mm and bring only my Sigma AF24mm and FA50. Ended up using only the 24mm about 90% of the time. It was somewhat liberating. This is one of the reasons why i'm thinking of the DA15 or DA21 - along with jshermans recent thread on the DA15 and your experiences with the shots you just mentioned.

Javier-
I'm in OC, Irvine to be exact.
Grew up in San Gabriel Valley though, Baldwin Park. I recall that you took pictures at Legg Lake so I think you know where Bolen Parque is.
I'm trying to decide whether to get a DA15 or DA21. I have an AF Sigma 24/2.8 and recently found that after leaving my 16-45 and bringing only my 24 and FA50 that I used the 24 about 90/95% of the time. I find the 16-45's bulk restricting and I'm still in the process of deciding what to sell in order to get either DA15 or DA21 (or both ;)) to get more into these candid type street shots.

Douglas-
How far away were you to take these shots?
I'm considering getting the DA 15 or 21 specifically for these "street" shots.
I've got a Sigma 24 as well as the DA 16-45mm.
I like the flexibility of the 16-45 but the bulk of it makes me not want to bring it along.
I'm curious what do others use as a focal length when taking these street shots?
I somehow think that a wide angle would be good as it might allow for hyperfocal focusing - set the lens to an f-stop and distance and be good for focus from say 5 ft to infinity?
what do you guys do?

Agree that #3 is a great "in the moment" shot. I think it epitomizes the "street" shot.
Didn't notice the leg until bbluesman mentioned it. I saw the photographer and the smiling gent in the russkie hat; it makes one examine the shot and ask multiple questions - is she taking a picture of mr smiley? oh, doesn't look like she's taking a photo of mr. smiley. So....Who is Mr. Smiley smiling at? Who/what is she taking a photo of?

More Venice, CA shots
begging dogs - probably could use a bit of cropping, this one also taken "from the hip"
Caffeine Queue
not sure what to call this one- this one, would probably be better if I got more of the bike and bench |

Abbott Kinney in Venice is one of my favorite places to walk and look for street shots. I've got a couple more to share shortly....

"Happy Venice Surfers" should give ya a hint!
I haven't quite gotten into Post Processing yet. I use Picasa and just used the default B&W. If you want to see the original it's in my flickr stream. This was straight jpg out of the k200d. I'll have to check the exif to see what lens and exposure I had on, probably 16-45.

This one was literally taken from the hip. I shot this one with the camera still at my hip and hoped it would focus and frame something nice. I cropped this one and converted it to B&W |

Here's one taken at night while at the Santa Ana Artist's Village. Not quite sure it works but I kinda like the dreamy impressionistic look to it. |

I'd have to say in this case the color - you lose the red hair context and the juxtaposition with the red light above with the b/w

Thanks Javier!
I've gotta look through some old shots to see if I can find more shots that are "street"
Unfortunately some of them may not have been taken with my Pentax - but then again, does it matter?

Javier-
This one reminds of "American Girl in Italy" by Ruth Orkin. Not exactly the same but it evokes a similar image.
Quite a few of your shots are reminescent of some masters - Bresson and Doisneau come to mind.
Javier and others - This thread has reminded me of what kind of photography I love to do - thx for the reminder.
I'll have to see if I have any shots worthy of this thread
